Gina Govojdean named 2026 ATHENA Award recipient. May 15, 2026 The Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber and The Vindicator are proud to announce Gina Govojdean, vice president of sales and supply at Howmet Aerospace, as the recipient of the 2026 ATHENA Award. She was honored at a celebratory dinner tonight at Waypoint 4180 in Canfield, where 30 outstanding women were recognized for their leadership, community service and dedication to mentoring other women. Govojdean of Austintown joined Howmet Aerospace, then Alcoa Inc., in 2012 after earning a bachelor's degree in business administration from Duquesne University. She advanced through procurement, operations and global leadership roles, becoming one of the youngest procurement leaders at Howmet in 2018 and the only female plant manager in Howmet's engineered structures business in 2022. She later became the first woman to lead Howmet Aerospace's Niles Operations, a 600-employee, unionized facility producing advanced titanium products for global aerospace and defense markets. In 2024, Govojdean became one of the youngest female executives in the company when she was named vice president of procurement, responsible for a spend portfolio supporting a $1 billion revenue business. In 2025, she moved into her current role as vice president of sales and supply, leading a global commercial organization focused on market growth and managing a $500 million sales portfolio. Her leadership has earned several honors. Govojdean was named one of the Institute for Supply Management's 30 Under 30 Rising Supply Chain Stars and received the Thomas NextGen for Industry award in 2020. In 2025, she was honored with a Women MAKE Award by The Manufacturing Institute. She also received Duquesne University's Young Alumna Achievement Award in 2025. Govojdean's commitment to supporting young women considering careers in manufacturing and STEM fields extends beyond her workplace. In partnership with the YWCA of Greater Pittsburgh, she helped secure grant funding for the organization's STEM Impact initiative, which equips instructors with curriculum, materials and training to deliver STEM education in after-school settings. Within Howmet Aerospace, Govojdean serves as the companywide lead for the Inter-Gen Network, an employee resource group focused on developing future leaders and strengthening connections across its multigenerational workforce. She also regularly engages with students and early-career professionals through STEM conferences, panel discussions and industry forums focused on advancing women in manufacturing. Her commitment to mentorship extends beyond the workplace. Govojdean serves as a volunteer field director for the Horatio Alger Association, where she promotes scholarship opportunities for students who have overcome significant adversity. She also supports community efforts through volunteer work, including organizing coat drives, leading book drives for the United Way and reading to elementary school students. "Gina Govojdean has excelled in roles where women have historically been underrepresented while opening doors for others," said Kim Calvert, executive vice president of Membership, Events and MarComm for the Regional Chamber. "From leading Howmet's Niles Operations plant to serving as a global executive, she has delivered results while advancing mentorship, STEM opportunities and community service - all hallmarks of the ATHENA Award." "The Vindicator is proud to continue our partnership on the ATHENA Awards along with the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber. The Vindicator would like to commend the 2026 ATHENA recipient and all of the nominees for their accomplishments and for inspiring young women in the Valley to strive for more for themselves and their communities," said Angela M. Kellar, advertising director for The Vindicator and Tribune Chronicle newspapers. Scholarships also were presented during the program to three exceptional local students. The recipient of the 2026 ATHENA Scholarship was Alexis Garcia, who will be a senior nursing student at Youngstown State University. Recipients of the 2026 Anthem Scholarships were Beni Tamang, who will be a sophomore at YSU, and Adriana Habeger, who will be a junior nursing student at YSU. Now in its 33rd year, the Regional Chamber's ATHENA Award Program is among the largest of its kind in the United States. Since its inception, more than 1,000 women have been honored for professional excellence, community service and dedication to empowering other women.
