Aquabyte

AI-driven biomass estimation and lice counting

Overview

Aquabyte uses AI and machine learning to help fish farmers manage aquaculture more efficiently. Its platform analyzes underwater images to automate key tasks like counting lice and estimating biomass, providing data on fish health and growth. The product is delivered as a software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform, with subscribers paying recurring fees to access the AI-powered tools and receive ongoing updates. Aquabyte differentiates itself through a dual presence in Silicon Valley and Norway, combining advanced tech development with deep, practical knowledge of Norwegian fish farming to tailor solutions for real-world farming needs. Its goal is to help farmers optimize operations, reduce costs, and make data-driven decisions at scale, leveraging continuous improvements through the SaaS model.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • May 2026 Hydra 360 launch expands Aquabyte beyond lice counting into feeding automation.
  • December 2025 Vitruvian control funds expansion across Norway, Chile, Iceland, Canada, and Scotland.
  • Aquabyte still targets global salmon farming, where welfare and efficiency software spending keeps rising.

What critics are saying

  • Mowi, Cermaq, and ScaleAQ can bundle competing sensors by 2027.
  • Hardware-heavy deployments create churn when farms standardize on cheaper camera stacks.
  • If Hydra 360 misses accuracy, Aquabyte becomes replaceable software wrapped around commoditized hardware.

What makes Aquabyte unique

  • Hydra 360 unifies feeding, welfare, biomass, and lice counting in one device.
  • Aquabyte combines Silicon Valley AI with Norwegian salmon-farming domain expertise.
  • Vitruvian's 2025 majority ownership validates Aquabyte as category leader.

Graphene Ventures exits Aquabyte with majority stake sale to Vitruvian Partners

Graphene Ventures has recorded its second exit in the agritech sector following Aquabyte's sale of a majority stake to global investment firm Vitruvian Partners in December 2025. This marks the fund's second agritech exit after John Deere's acquisition of Bear Flag Robotics in 2021. Aquabyte, a portfolio company held through Graphene's Fund II and Fund III, has become a global leader in data-driven aquaculture technology. Founded in 2017, the company combines Silicon Valley innovation with deep sector knowledge to provide comprehensive solutions based on artificial intelligence, computer vision and big data analytics. The platform delivers precise information to fish farmers about fish health, behaviour, growth and parasite levels, supporting improved efficiency and sustainability in marine production. The exit represents an encouraging start to 2026 for Graphene Ventures.
