What believers are saying

  • Brighthouse shareholders approved the merger with 99.7% support in early 2026, enabling near-certain deal closure.
  • The deal adds $243B in assets and expands annuity distribution, boosting Aquarian's AUM past $250B.
  • Mubadala Capital and RedBird provide deep capital backing for long-duration liability growth and balance sheet fortification.

What critics are saying

  • NAIC or state regulators may deny the takeover over antitrust or capital adequacy, forcing termination within 6–12 months.
  • Fitch downgrades post-deal could erode annuity buyer confidence and spike funding costs within 3–6 months.
  • Brighthouse's $100B+ long-duration annuity liabilities face balance sheet erosion from 2026–2027 rate spikes within 12–18 months.

What makes Aquarian unique

  • Aquarian operates as a sovereign-backed holding firm focused on insurance-linked assets and long-duration liabilities.
  • The $4.1B Brighthouse acquisition gives Aquarian control of a top U.S. annuity provider with $243B in assets.
