ArenaNet

ArenaNet

Develops online MMOs and sells copies

Overview

ArenaNet creates online role-playing games and persistent worlds, with Guild Wars 2 as its flagship title. The game is sold as a complete copy and complemented by in-game purchases, allowing players to join a global MMO community and explore ongoing, dynamic content in a living world. What distinguishes ArenaNet from competitors is a focus on hand-crafted world design, deep attention to player experience, and continuous live-service updates that evolve the game rather than relying on a one-time release. The company aims to deliver high-quality online worlds that meet strong player expectations while attracting top talent to push further development.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Guild Wars 3 targets PC and PS5 with momentum-based combat, launching beta in fall 2027 to revitalize MMOs.
  • Guild Wars Reforged mobile launch on June 24, 2026 enables cross-platform play, retaining no-subscription model for existing players.
  • ArenaNet commits to year-long Guild Wars 2 modernization, rebalancing events and improving performance to address player concerns.

What critics are saying

  • Mistbound is developed by NCSoft, not ArenaNet, risking brand dilution and loss of quality control over the CCG spin-off.
  • Exclusive China-first Mistbound release via Bilibili blocks global revenue if domestic performance fails within 12–18 months.
  • Guild Wars 2 faces 18-month content drought until post-GW3 launch, risking player attrition as competitors release new expansions.

What makes ArenaNet unique

  • ArenaNet uniquely develops all three Guild Wars titles simultaneously across different timelines in Tyria.
  • The studio pioneered horizontal progression in MMOs with Guild Wars 2, avoiding traditional subscription models entirely.
  • ArenaNet expands franchising beyond MMORPGs into tactical card battles with Mistbound, co-developed with NCSoft and Bilibili.

Guild Wars is coming to iOS & Android next week.

Guild Wars is coming to iOS & Android next week. One of the greatest MMORPGs I have ever played is the original Guild Wars. I spent thousands of hours exploring Tyria with my friends on PC when I was a young boy, and it's a game that has created some of my fondest gaming memories and some of my fondest relationships, too. Guild Wars revealed an all-new "Reforged" version of the original Guild Wars late last year, and even Steam Deck verified it, so I could explore my favourite RPG on handhelds, which long-time readers will know I am very passionate about after reviewing 100s of them over on its YouTube channel. So when I heard that ArenaNet are bringing this incredible remaster to Android and iOS, I felt an exhale of breath take over me, because I'll be honest, even though the Steam Deck is great, I much prefer playing games on my premium Android retro handhelds... because they don't weigh a tonne. Playing an RPG on a smartphone will certainly be cramped, but many Guild Wars players won't mind doing that for minimal times, to perhaps level grind or do some of the smaller, collecting missions that don't require concentration. And, I am hoping that ArenaNet will allow the connection of controllers and Android-focused retro handhelds to take full advantage of the game mechanics that they have produced for the Steam Deck. The official date that Guild Wars Reforged will be coming to mobile is 24th June 2026, according to their X post. "When Guild Wars Reforge launches globally, you will be able to log in with your ArenaNet account to play cross-platform with your existing characters on PC, Steam Deck, or mobile. New players can play Prophecies(TM) for free, with additional campaigns and expansions available to purchase", states ArenaNet. Each campaign's paid version can be purchased as a standalone add-on for $6.99 in the game. The Guild Wars: Eye of the North(TM) expansion and Bonus Mission Pack will also be available for $9.99 and $5.99. Existing Guild Wars Reforged players on ArenaNet accounts can simply log in on mobile to progress their characters across PC, Steam Deck, and mobile devices with no cost, ads, or restrictions! You can pre-register on the Google Play Store, which will notify you when it's ready to download on the 24th June. No pre-registration is currently available for iOS yet. Like what you are reading? So, about that new "Guild Wars" game...

So, about that new "Guild Wars" game... Right. So ArenaNet is finally developing a follow-up to the amazing, groundbreaking MMORPG, "Guild Wars 2". Cool. Great. Awesome. Well, I walked away from GW2 some time ago, for a variety of reasons. Health, my computer not being up to snuff to run the game anymore, the game not being available on consoles (where I was preferring to play the last few years), etc. But now that I have a new laptop that will easily play GW2, and this announcement rekindling my love for all things Guild Wars, I find myself reinstalling GW2 as I write this blog post. Hey, I'm home sick from work... what else am I going to do? Anyway, after watching that amazing announcement trailer, and reading about what ArenaNet plans for GW2 over the next year, I have to say I'm excited to jump back into the game. I will also likely buy GW3 on launch, just as I did with the original GW and GW2 before it. I've been a fan all the way back to the beginning, even if I've stepped aside the last few years. But now, I find myself being pulled right back in again! Buckle up, kids! This is going to be a wild, wild ride!

Guild Wars 2: Visions of Eternity Expansion Out Now on PC

Guild Wars 2: Visions of Eternity expansion out now on PC. Developer ArenaNet has launched the sixth major expansion for Guild Wars 2 today, with Visions of Eternity now available to players on PC. Visions of Eternity adds a new island to explore called Castora, with two new maps to explore, a new storyline, and plenty more. The new storyline kicks off with whispers and rumors of the island of Castora, with the Tyrian Alliance stepping in to uncover more about the magical island once they discover that the Inquest has begun sniffing around for Castora. Alongside two new maps included with the new expansion, Shipwreck Strand and Starlit Weald, players will be able to check out a new and improved skimmer, new raid encounters, a new homestead plot, and new legendary gear. Visions of Eternity will also feature new boss fights, new skills, and new seasonal rewards. "The team is thrilled to launch Visions of Eternity," said game director Josh Davis in a press release. "This is the first time Guild Wars 2 is going to a location in Tyria that's truly brand new to all players. The island vibe of the setting gives us a lot of room to explore improvements and evolutions to the skimmer and homesteads that are also thematically appropriate to the setting, and we can't wait to see how players tackle our new world and raid bosses." The new expansion is available for $24.99, and ArenaNet has plans to release multiple free content updates to the expansion throughout 2026.
