Avalanche Energy develops compact, modular fusion reactors for portable clean power. Its Orbitron is a desk-sized micro-fusion reactor that uses electrostatic confinement for ions and magnetic fields for electrons, with 5 kW modular cells that can be stacked to reach higher power. The company competes by prioritizing a small form factor and faster design, build, and test cycles instead of large, expensive tokamaks. Its targets include space propulsion, remote microgrids, trucking, and shipping, with a secondary stream to produce high-energy neutrons for radioisotope production and materials testing through its FusionWERX facility.

Avalanche Energy has secured $5.2 million in funding from DARPA to develop fusion-powered battery systems for military applications. The 30-month award, granted through DARPA's Rads to Watts programme, will support development of solid-state, micro-fabricated cells that convert radioisotope-produced alpha particles into electricity. The technology targets defence and space situations where traditional batteries, refuelling and solar power are impractical. Avalanche will lead a team including the University of Utah, Caltech, Los Alamos National Laboratory and McQuaide Microsystems. The funding comes after Avalanche raised $29 million earlier this year led by RA Capital Management, with participation from 8090 Industries, Overlay Capital, Congruent Ventures, Founders Fund, Lowercarbon Capital and Toyota Ventures.
New investors include 8090 Industries, Overlay Capital, and others, with full participation from existing investors Congruent Ventures, Founders Fund, Lowercarbon Capital, and Toyota Ventures, demonstrating increased confidence in Avalanche's technical progress and commercial roadmap.
Avalanche Energy has raised $29 million in an oversubscribed funding round led by RA Capital Management to develop desktop-sized fusion reactors. The Seattle-based startup aims to create compact power plants for satellites, underwater drones and remote bases. Overlay Capital joined as a new investor, alongside existing backers Congruent Ventures and Lowercarbon Capital. The company is working on miniaturised fusion technology that could provide portable power solutions for specialised applications requiring independent energy sources in challenging environments.
Avalanche Energy has been granted $10 million by the Washington State Department of Commerce through its Green Jobs Grant Program to initiate the establishment of this facility in eastern Washington.
Avalanche Energy awarded a $10 million grant to develop fusion technology, set to create jobs and drive clean energy innovation in the industry.
