Avalanche

Avalanche

Develops compact modular micro-fusion reactors

Overview

Avalanche Energy develops compact, modular fusion reactors for portable clean power. Its Orbitron is a desk-sized micro-fusion reactor that uses electrostatic confinement for ions and magnetic fields for electrons, with 5 kW modular cells that can be stacked to reach higher power. The company competes by prioritizing a small form factor and faster design, build, and test cycles instead of large, expensive tokamaks. Its targets include space propulsion, remote microgrids, trucking, and shipping, with a secondary stream to produce high-energy neutrons for radioisotope production and materials testing through its FusionWERX facility.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • DARPA $5.2M radiovoltaics contract validates energy capture physics directly applicable to fusion reactors.
  • Modular 5kW stackable architecture addresses distributed energy markets: space, maritime, remote microgrids.
  • Series B $29M funding with strategic investors enables simultaneous FusionWERX scaling and Q>1 demonstration.

What critics are saying

  • Tokamak competitors achieve net energy gain first, eliminating Avalanche's primary technical differentiation claim.
  • FusionWERX construction delays beyond 2027 licensing timeline strain cash runway across dual R&D tracks.
  • Competitors secure major energy or defense partnerships, locking Avalanche out of enterprise distribution channels.

What makes Avalanche unique

  • Orbitron's electrostatic-magnetic hybrid design enables desktop-scale fusion iteration in days versus competitor years.
  • FusionWERX commercial testing facility generates independent revenue from external clients before net energy.
  • 300kV high-voltage breakthrough achieves 6 million volts per meter density for efficient neutron production.

Avalanche Energy secures $5.2M DARPA funding to develop fusion-powered batteries for military

Avalanche Energy has secured $5.2 million in funding from DARPA to develop fusion-powered battery systems for military applications. The 30-month award, granted through DARPA's Rads to Watts programme, will support development of solid-state, micro-fabricated cells that convert radioisotope-produced alpha particles into electricity. The technology targets defence and space situations where traditional batteries, refuelling and solar power are impractical. Avalanche will lead a team including the University of Utah, Caltech, Los Alamos National Laboratory and McQuaide Microsystems. The funding comes after Avalanche raised $29 million earlier this year led by RA Capital Management, with participation from 8090 Industries, Overlay Capital, Congruent Ventures, Founders Fund, Lowercarbon Capital and Toyota Ventures.
