Former Avalanche Studios chief Natalie Francis joins Massive Entertainment as managing director.

Former Avalanche Studios chief Natalie Francis joins Massive Entertainment as managing director. Francis will step into the role starting October 1st following Thomas Andren's recent appoint as general manager for the creative network. Diego Argüello, Contributing Editor, News, GameDeveloper.com September 24, 2026 Natalie Francis, former head of studio operations and development at DICE and chief development officer at Avalanche Studios, is joining Massive Entertainment on October 1st. As announced by the studio, Francis will be the new managing director of the Ubisoft subsidiary, which has worked on the likes of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and Star Wars Outlaws in recent times. "Massive Entertainment has an extraordinary history, built by incredibly talented people and a culture that cares deeply about craft and quality," Francis says in the announcement. "I'm excited to build on that foundation and help create the conditions for the studio and its people to thrive in its next chapter." Meanwhile, Christoph Hartmann, general manager for Creative House 2 - one of the structural subdivisions within Ubisoft after its restructuring earlier this year - speaks about Francis' longstanding legacy and translating those skills to her new role. "Natalie's extensive experience bringing talented, multidisciplinary teams together around a clear creative and business vision makes her ideally suited to lead Massive into its next chapter. Her track record of delivering ambitious player experiences while connecting long-term strategy with operational excellence provides a strong foundation for the studio and its talented teams moving forward." Massive Entertainment has had a rocky 2026, which can be said for most of Ubisoft subsidiaries. In October 2025, the parent company announced yet another staff reduction across its global network of studios, specifically around Massive, taking the form of a voluntary buyout. At the time, Ubisoft referred to it as a "voluntary career transition program." Those who took the buyout were set to receive a "comprehensive package" that included "financial and career assistance." Then, in January of this year, the parent company confirmed that it intended to make 55 people redundant at both Massive Entertainment and Ubisoft Stockholm, with the proposed restructure following the completion of the aforementioned voluntary redundancy program. Other staff members across San Francisco, Winnipeg and Belgrade, and Barcelona were also affected by their own series of job cuts throughout the year. Massive Entertainment is currently leading the development of Tom Clancy's The Division 2 and the forthcoming Tom Clancy's The Division 3. Contraband assets found hidden inside Avalanche's fishing game.

Contraband assets found hidden inside Avalanche's fishing game. A YouTuber has dug up locations, vehicles and playable mechanics from the cancelled Xbox exclusive Contraband hidden inside a fishing game built by the same studio group. The cancelled Xbox exclusive Contraband may be gone, but it turns out some of its work survived - buried inside an open-world fishing game from the same studio group. YouTuber Luke JC has uncovered assets from Contraband hidden within Call of the Wild: The Angler, a fishing title developed by Expansive Worlds, a creative division of Avalanche Studios Group. According to the video, the discovered content includes locations, vehicles, mechanics and general assets from the shelved game. Footage shows Luke speeding around in a boat and piloting a helicopter - playable content that was never meant to be seen. The history of a ghost game. Contraband was set in the "fictional world of 1970s Bayan," described as a "co-op smuggler's paradise." The game was in development at Avalanche Studios and was announced four years ago at E3 2021. Despite a strong debut concept, the game only ever received one public-facing CG trailer, and there was no news on it in the four years following its announcement. Microsoft officially "stopped" development on Contraband, which was originally announced all the way back in 2021. The cancellation was part of a wider wave of Xbox project closures - the company had also recently cancelled two high-profile games: Rare's Everwild and The Initiative's Perfect Dark reboot. The fallout for Avalanche was severe. Avalanche Studios, the team behind Just Cause and the now-cancelled Xbox exclusive Contraband, closed its UK branch, with the developer sharing a short message on September 30th as it launched a consultation process over the closure. Avalanche's wider job loss plans also affected the company's Malmö and Stockholm studios in Sweden. The fishing game connection. The unlikely home for Contraband's remnants is Call of the Wild: The Angler, developed by Expansive Worlds, a creative division within Avalanche Studios Group, which launched on PC on August 31, 2022. Both titles were built by teams under the same Avalanche Studios Group umbrella and share the same proprietary Apex engine, which enables vast open worlds with endless creative possibilities. That shared technical foundation appears to be exactly why Contraband assets could be embedded - and discovered - within The Angler's files. The discovery adds a rare, tangible glimpse into what Contraband might have looked like in motion. First announced in 2021, the game was described as a "co-op smuggler's paradise" set in the 1970s. While the concept sounded genuinely interesting, little was heard about it over the years, and beyond rumours of playtests that reportedly received a positive reception, no official glimpses beyond the reveal teaser were ever shared. What this means for players now. For those who want to see what Luke JC found, the video is the closest anyone will likely get to experiencing Contraband in motion. As for The Angler itself, Expansive Worlds has announced the end of development for Call of the Wild: The Angler, though the game will remain playable both online and offline in its current state. For anyone curious about Contraband - or just the strangeness of video game archaeology - the CDKP price tracker below is watching the market: Live deal tracker If Contraband ever surfaces again on any storefront, you can track the best available deal right here - currently listed at $3.88. It is a rare thing for cancelled games to leave behind anything playable, and the fact that an entire set of locations, vehicles and mechanics survived inside a live fishing title is a remarkable footnote to one of Xbox's most quietly disappointing cancellations. Just Cause developer Avalanche Studios is working on A live service game using Unreal Engine.

Just Cause developer Avalanche Studios is working on A live service game using Unreal Engine. Just Cause developer Avalanche Studios is currently working on a multiplayer live service game using Unreal Engine. According to job listings for the positions of Gameplay Systems Programmer and Technical Director (via IdleSloth84_ on Twitter/X) at Just Cause creator Avalanche Studios, the developer is entering pre-production on a multiplayer live-service game using Unreal Engine rather than its proprietary Apex Engine. The job description for the position of Technical Director states that the new recruit will take the reins of the new project's technical vision, which is said to be moving from the prototyping phase into pre-production. They will be required to transition the project from a proven prototype into a high-performance production-ready system, ensuring the technical foundation is scalable for full-scale development. They will be responsible for defining the technical architecture, establishing the long-term engineering roadmap, and ensuring the development team at Avalanche Studios has the robust tools and systems needed to bring "this ground-breaking experience" to a launch state. The position also requires setting the standard for Unreal Engine development on the project, overseeing everything from core systems to performance optimization and multiplayer stability. Similarly, the job description for the position of Gameplay Systems Programmer includes refactoring existing solutions and transforming prototyped features into production-ready systems. The position also requires experience working in a live-service game environment, particularly with content updates and feature rollouts. The new recruit is also expected to have knowledge of Unreal Engine's Gameplay Ability System (GAS), Unreal Gameplay Framework, experience designing APIs used by other programmers, strong replication/networking literacy, and familiarity with data-driven design patterns. In August, 2025, Microsoft canceled Contraband, the previous title Avalanche Studios had been working on, after nearly four years without any update on its development. The game was originally unveiled during the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase in 2021 as a first-party exclusive. It was billed as a co-op multiplayer game set in the 1970s fictional world of Bayan, described by the developers as a "smuggler's paradise."

Just Cause developers Avalanche Studios confirms new AAA MMO.

Just Cause developers Avalanche Studios confirms new AAA MMO. updated_at: May 25, 2026 06:22 published_at: May 24, 2026 23:45 Just Cause developer Avalanche Studios confirms a new AAA MMO game in the works, as per recent job listings. The upcoming title will be the studio's first release since 2023, following mass layoffs and Contraband's cancellation in 2025. Avalanche Studios hiring new developers for unnamed game. AAA online multiplayer game is in active development. Avalanche Studios Group (Just Cause, theHunter) has confirmed that a new AAA Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) game is in active development at its Stockholm studio, according to job listings posted in the past week. Six new job ads hiring programmers and artists for an unspecified title have gone up on the studio's official LinkedIn since May 21. The studio is looking for people "to shape the online backbone for an ambitious new game currently in active development," with experience in AAA production and "large-scale multiplayer environments." The project appears to heavily feature animals and creatures, as the studio's listing for a Lead Character Artist calls for someone who is "a subject-matter expert in animal anatomy, behavior, and realism." The Senior Gameplay Programmer listing calls for someone with "very strong Unreal Engine knowledge," which may mean that the studio will no longer use its proprietary Apex Engine. Three listings for back-end engineers have been posted in the past week, alongside the project-specific dev roles, suggesting that the studio is gearing up to handle a larger volume of player data. The game could be Avalanche Studios' first release since 2023, following the cancellation of the highly anticipated co-op multiplayer Contraband in 2025. Avalanche Studios has yet to announce any upcoming games on its website or social media channels. This is not the first time job listings have indirectly confirmed that the studio is working on an untitled project. In April 2026, a now-removed job ad for a Senior Technical Designer called for a tech design generalist to "play a vital role in the development of an unannounced AAA project." Fans hope for Just Cause 5. Some fans on social media speculate that the project could be Just Cause 5. The last Just Cause game was released way back in 2018, and a 2022 Square Enix financial report confirmed that a new title was in development for the franchise. There have been no official announcements about the development or cancellation of the game's fifth installment. However, Just Cause 5 is a "no-go," according to the game's founder and creator, Christofer Sundberg. In an X (formerly Twitter) post from August 2025, Sundberg stated that a fifth installment in the series is unlikely because "extremely few" developers from the original team remain involved with the game. The news of an unnamed Avalanche Studios project has elicited mixed reactions from fans. Some look forward to seeing a new Avalanche Studios title after three years, while others are skeptical of their departure from Just Cause's single-player system, which put them on the map. Fans have expressed their concerns about the studio entering an oversaturated MMO market, citing the recent closure of the popular MMO Destiny 2 as proof of the genre's unpredictability. Whether Avalanche Studios can maintain the quality fans have come to expect from them in a live-update game is another cause of concern. The future of the Just Cause video game series remains unclear. However, a Just Cause live-action film adaptation is reported to be in the works at Universal Studios. In 2025, The Wrap confirmed that director Ángel Manuel Soto (Blue Beetle) and writer Aaron Rabin (Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan) are attached to the project. Staffing A new game after layoffs and cancellations. This news follows mass layoffs from Avalanche Studios closing three of its five offices. New York and Montreal shut down in 2024, followed by Liverpool in 2025. The studio currently operates out of Stockholm and Malmö, and has not officially announced any active projects since 2023. 2023's open-world roguelite Ravenbound was the last game the studio released. In the same year, Square Enix cancelled a free-to-play mobile Just Cause co-op shooter. The latest news about an Avalanche Studios project came in August 2025, when development partner Xbox announced that progress on the MMO Contraband had been "stopped while [they] evaluate the project's future." Avalanche Studios has seemingly set its sights on a new project, pivoting away from the single-player format they are known for and into the MMO space. The studio has yet to make an official announcement about its future plans.
