BASF: positive balance after opening new integrated site in China.

BASF: positive balance after opening new integrated site in China. BASF reports an optimistic balance following the commissioning of its €8.7 billion plant in Zhanjiang, China, and plans further efficiency improvements at its... Eulerpool News Agency DE000BASF111 Successful start in China. About 100 days after the opening of the new integrated site in Zhanjiang, China, BASF's CFO Dirk Elvermann draws a positive balance. The chemical company invested €8.7 billion in this facility and expects to incur losses in the first year of operations. Nevertheless, the site has already recorded nearly two profitable months, which Elvermann described as "truly spectacular." Market-Oriented investment strategy. For BASF, the site in Zhanjiang is a direct response to market developments. "Ultimately, the market is decisive for where we invest," explained Elvermann. The plant, which has more than 30 product lines, including a steam cracker, was not only completed on time but also within budget. Such positive developments are rare in large projects, highlighting the company's efficiency and management. Innovative strength and team spirit in Ludwigshafen. Regarding the loss-making headquarters in Ludwigshafen, Elvermann speaks of a remarkable cultural shift. Employees are actively developing ideas to enhance efficiency, leverage synergies, and improve the cost structure. "I am witnessing a lot of solidarity and team spirit here," said the CFO. Despite the positive developments, the Ludwigshafen site will continue to shrink. The number of employees has already decreased to around 30,000 full-time positions and is expected to decline further to ensure long-term competitiveness. At the end of 2024, there were still 33,370 employees working there. Long-Term strategy for returning to profitability. BASF aims to bring the company's largest site back into profitability. Elvermann acknowledges that this will be a longer journey but emphasizes that BASF can implement many efficiency measures on its own. "However, we also need a bit of tailwind from the market," he added. The trend is moving in the right direction, and cost savings are already visible in the profit and loss statement. Progress in cost-saving programs. According to Elvermann, the existing cost-saving programs have already made significant progress. Of the planned annual savings of €2.3 billion by the end of 2026, approximately €1.9 billion has already been achieved. To further reduce costs, BASF is focusing on standardization, automation, and digitization. Part of the IT, finance, and HR services will be relocated to Hyderabad, India, where labor costs are significantly lower. These strategic measures could positively impact competitiveness and shareholder value. Get this data via API Programmatic access to financial news, fundamentals, and market data

Port of Antwerp: the first-ever departure of an electrically hauled train on Line 11.

Port of Antwerp: the first-ever departure of an electrically hauled train on Line 11. posted on 27th Jun 2026 11:11 On 25 June 2026, the first electrically hauled freight train departed on the newly electrified, doubled and renovated Line 11 in the north of the port of Antwerp. With this, Infrabel, BASF and Combinant are entering the final phase of a large-scale and strategic rail project in the Port of Antwerp. In close cooperation, the three partners have spent recent years doubling and electrifying freight railway Line 11 (L11). Thanks to this joint investment, capacity will increase significantly, enabling freight transport to operate more sustainably, faster and more efficiently. The works are now almost complete, with only the construction of a new electrical substation still to be carried out. Full completion is scheduled for autumn 2026. Line 11 is currently the most important rail link for the petrochemical cluster in the Port of Antwerp, serving major industrial and logistics users such as BASF and Combinant, while also providing a direct connection to the PSA North Sea Terminal. This line is essential for both production and intermodal logistics: - 8 to 9 million tonnes of goods transported annually, - roughly 25% of all rail freight to and from the port, - 7,000 freight trains operated in 2025, - on weekdays, an average of 20 to 30 trains per day. Combinant and BASF are among the largest users of the line and play a major role in the success and continued growth of rail transport in the port. The line is therefore an indispensable link in the daily operations of both industry and logistics chains in the northern part of the port. The project is the result of intensive cooperation between infrastructure manager Infrabel and industrial and logistics partners BASF and Combinant, who are also investing in rail capacity and electrification on their own sites. The works include: - construction of a second track (5 km), - full electrification of the line (18 km of overhead line), - installation of 230 catenary masts, - renewal of 10 km of rails, - 8,350 sleepers and more than 25,000 tonnes of ballast, - electrification of the rail connections of BASF and Combinant. For BASF and Combinant, the project directly strengthens their logistics operations: electric traction becomes possible deep into the terminals, and capacity, reliability and flexibility increase significantly. These investments allow both companies to realise their ambition to shift more freight to rail. Ben Beirnaert, General Manager of Combinant: "With the electrification of the entrance, we strengthen Combinant as a sustainable intermodal hub and increase efficiency, resulting in structural cost reductions across the chain." Investment in sustainable growth and modal shift The total investment on the public network amounts to 31.5 million EUR, of which: - 17 million EUR comes from the European Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), - the remaining 14.5 million EUR is funded by the federal government In addition, BASF and Combinant jointly invested approximately 6 million EUR in their rail connections. For them, this project is an important step in their sustainability strategy: - reduced dependence on diesel traction, - lower CO[2] emissions, - more efficient and scalable logistics. Together with Infrabel, they actively contribute to the modal shift towards rail, a key objective within the port's strategy. The last phase of the project is the construction of a new traction substation in Zandvliet, near the BASF site. This substation guarantees a stable power supply for electric trains and supports the existing infrastructure, and prepares the network for further electrification in the port. The construction cost is approximately 3 million EUR and is partly financed through European funds. Complex project, strong partnership Works began at the end of 2024 and reached full speed from summer 2025 onwards. The project was carried out under challenging conditions: - works mainly at night and during weekends, - activities at BASF and Combinant continued during construction, - limited space in the central reservation of the A12, - complex logistics organisation - strict European deadline (30 June 2026).

BASF opens Attapulgus R&D center.

BASF opens Attapulgus R&D center. Published 2:48 pm Tuesday, May 19, 2026 BASF Vice President Jan Donath cuts the ribbon on BASF's new R&D facility last Wednesday, with Site Director Mark Herring at left and Global R&D Director Marius Vaarkamp at right. Representatives from the Bainbridge-Decatur County Chamber of Commerce, Decatur County Board of Commissioners, Decatur County Board of Education, City of Bainbridge, and City of Attapulgus were also present for the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Ethan Benn/The Post-Searchlight BASF opened a new research and development center in Attapulgus last Wednesday, bringing a state-of-the-art facility to its existing Decatur County site. Vice President Jan Donath said the company moved its R&D lab from New Jersey to Georgia because its three manufacturing sites are also based in the state. The new facility allows different teams to work together on the same site - and it's much easier to run a sample up the hill than mail it to the Northeast. "This is our commitment to the state of Georgia, and it makes absolute sense that we have our R&D lab now located also in Georgia," Donath said. "Innovation is crucial to remain competitive, and from out of Georgia, we serve the world." BASF makes catalysts that help refiners make more or better quality gasoline from oil, Global R&D Director Marius Vaarkamp explained. But creating those catalysts takes serious research. "We need different formulations, different chemistry, and that's actually what we're doing and developing here," he said. The Post-Searchlight - as well as representatives from the Bainbridge-Decatur County Chamber of Commerce, Decatur County Board of Commissioners, Decatur County Board of Education, City of Bainbridge, and City of Attapulgus - toured the new facility. Some employees were already at work developing new products and testing catalysts, which is at the "core of the laboratory's work," according to BASF. The Attapulgus site has been occupied for over a century, Site Director Mark Herring said, though catalyst production began in the 1970s. "Our job is to make sure it's many more years that [we're] here," he said. Herring added that having manufacturing and R&D on the same site is a "beautiful scene," and BASF will be better for it. "[Fluid Catalytic Cracking] production has been in this great community of Attapulgus for 53 years," he said. "Let the generations of the next 53 years look back at this day as another milestone for Decatur County."
