Ryder and BJC HealthCare earn NextGen Partnership in Execution Award. The healthcare and logistics partners will share how automation, visibility and a patient-centered supply chain strategy delivered dramatic improvements in service, efficiency and operational resilience. SCMR Staff · August 6, 2026 · Executive takeaways. * Ryder System and BJC HealthCare earned the 2026 NextGen Partnership in Execution Award for demonstrating how a strategic healthcare logistics partnership improved supply chain visibility, automation, inventory management and patient care. * The organizations transformed healthcare supply chain operations by consolidating supplier channels into a centralized, technology-enabled logistics network that increased order fulfillment, reduced costs and strengthened operational resilience. * Patient outcomes - not automation alone - drove the transformation. Advanced warehouse management, end-to-end supply chain visibility and sequenced deliveries helped ensure clinicians had the right medical supplies when and where they were needed. * Attendees at the NextGen Supply Chain Conference will hear directly from Ryder and BJC HealthCare leaders as they share lessons learned, measurable results and best practices for building resilient healthcare supply chains through strategic collaboration. Technology alone rarely transforms a supply chain. Transformation happens when organizations align around a common objective, combine complementary expertise and execute with discipline. That philosophy is embodied by Ryder System, Inc. and BJC HealthCare, recipients of the 2026 NextGen Supply Chain Conference Partnership in Execution Award for redefining how healthcare supply chains can operate when logistics excellence is aligned with patient outcomes. Presented during Thursday morning's general session, the award recognizes partnerships that deliver measurable business value by combining operational innovation, technology and execution. Rather than recognizing either organization individually, the award celebrates how collaboration between partners can achieve results neither could accomplish alone. For Ryder and BJC HealthCare, that collaboration fundamentally changed how medical supplies move through one of the nation's leading healthcare systems. Thys Visser, Vice President of Operations, Healthcare & High Tech for Ryder, and Jason Luby, Vice President, Value Chain Management & Sourcing Operations, for BJC HealthCare, will sit down for a fireside chat on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026, to discuss their partnership. All of the 2026 NextGen Supply Chain Conference awards, which include the End User, Solution Provider, Startup, Partnership in Execution, and Visionary, are sponsored by Zion Solutions Group. A new model for healthcare logistics. Like many healthcare organizations, BJC HealthCare historically managed a fragmented supply chain characterized by multiple supplier channels, inconsistent delivery performance and unnecessary manual work performed by clinical staff. Rather than accepting those limitations, BJC partnered with Ryder to rethink the operating model from the ground up. To view the latest agenda, click here Organizations interested in sponsoring the conference, click here Drawing on logistics best practices developed across industries, including automotive and advanced manufacturing, Ryder worked with BJC to design and launch a highly automated 416,000-square-foot Consolidated Services Center (CSC) that now serves as the centralized logistics hub supporting the health system's eastern region. The facility supports 14 hospitals, more than 3,300 licensed beds and approximately 4,600 physicians, consolidating supplier channels into a single scalable operation that improves inventory management, delivery performance and operational consistency across the enterprise. Putting patients at the center of the supply chain. While the project introduced sophisticated automation and advanced logistics technologies, its primary objective was never simply operational efficiency. It was ensuring caregivers always have the supplies they need to care for patients. Ryder engineered highly sequenced deliveries that prioritize the most critical products for immediate availability at hospital loading docks, helping clinicians spend less time searching for supplies and more time caring for patients. Supporting that strategy is an integrated warehouse management system connected with RyderShare, Ryder's proprietary visibility platform, providing end-to-end inventory visibility, demand planning and collaborative issue resolution across the supply chain, even during natural disasters, product shortages and other disruptions. Perhaps most importantly, the partnership transformed BJC's role within its own supply chain. Rather than reacting to shortages and supplier constraints, the health system now has direct sourcing capabilities, complete inventory visibility and real-time cost transparency that enable more proactive decision-making and stronger operational resilience. Results that extend beyond the warehouse. The operational improvements have been substantial. Hospital order fulfillment increased from 90% to more than 99%, while on-time, in-full delivery performance nearly tripled - from 27% to 75%. Order processing costs fell by 80%, inventory-on-hand declined by 25 days, and nursing unit service levels climbed above 98.5%, ensuring clinicians consistently have the supplies needed at the bedside. The operation also achieved 100% inventory control with real-time, end-to-end visibility, giving supply chain leaders unprecedented insight into inventory, demand and system-wide performance.
Aurenar, a St. Louis-based developer of non-invasive neuromodulation technology for intensive care patients, has closed an oversubscribed $5.7 million seed round. The Go Red for Women Venture Fund and Solas BioVentures co-led the financing, with participation from BJC Health and Kaleida Capital. The funding will advance Aurenar's V-Link platform towards pivotal trials, including final device development and FDA regulatory submissions. V-Link, which recently received FDA breakthrough device designation, delivers transauricular vagus nerve stimulation to modulate inflammatory responses in conditions like subarachnoid haemorrhage. The company was founded based on research from Washington University School of Medicine. Clinical trials demonstrated that the technology reduced moderate-to-severe vasospasm by over 40% and lowered 30-day hospitalisation costs by 20%.

AI platform reduces paperwork for WashU Medicine and BJC physicians. Less time on documentation means more time to focus on patients A doctor's workday often extends beyond the time spent with patients - typing up notes after patient visits can take a few hours daily. Most physicians say they would rather devote their mental energy to patient care than to such administrative tasks. To help ease that burden, WashU Medicine and BJC Health recently made a clinical artificial intelligence (AI) platform available to physicians that captures and summarizes what is said during medical appointments, allowing doctors to focus on interacting directly with their patients and less on note-taking. The joint Center for Health AI (CHAI) vetted the technology and is leading the rollout, starting with outpatient clinics. The center, established as part of the long-term affiliation agreement between WashU Medicine and BJC Health, is focused on developing and evaluating AI technologies to make healthcare more personalized and effective for patients and more efficient for providers. Doctors who use the platform find that it can save time and effort over manually typing up notes or transcribing recorded notes. "This resource allows us to spend more time engaging directly with patients and still produces records that are very accurate. The platform captures the relevant aspects of the patient-clinician conversation and is generated within 30 seconds or a minute," said Sam Bhayani, MD, who is a member of CHAI's executive team as the chief medical officer for WashU Medicine Physicians, the clinical practice group that includes more than 2,550 primary care and specialist physicians. The AI note-taking platform, called Abridge, is simple to use with a smartphone: After obtaining patient consent, the physician opens an app on their phone and the technology "listens" to the visit and generates notes that summarize the discussion. Bhayani, who is also the the Robert Killian Royce, M.D., Distinguished Professor in the Division of Urology in the Mary Culver Department of Surgery, explained that the physician can then review the notes, refer back to the transcript if necessary, and make edits and additions before adding them to the patient's electronic medical record - a much less time-consuming process than drafting notes from scratch. A pilot study of the platform and other similar options, conducted by CHAI and involving nearly 500 WashU Medicine and BJC physicians, generated overwhelmingly positive feedback from the doctors, Bhayani added. Early studies indicated that users of the Abridge platform had a 20% reduction in "pajama time" - the after-hours work physicians often put in to draft patient notes. Philip Payne, PhD, the Janet and Bernard Becker Professor at WashU Medicine and chief health AI officer for BJC Health and WashU Medicine, said the adoption of the Abridge platform represents a long-term commitment by both institutions to push healthcare innovation forward using validated AI technologies. "CHAI has a lot of high-level expertise to evaluate the impact of AI platforms like this in all facets of healthcare, ensuring that they are effective at improving clinical outcomes, provider well-being and patient experience," said Payne, adding that the rigor WashU Medicine and BJC Health bring to assessing the utility and reliability of these platforms means that decisions made here can provide a model for other healthcare systems looking to adopt these technologies. "If the AI platform improves quality, safety, outcomes and value of care at WashU Medicine and BJC Health, then other people will look to see how we made that work, and it will have a demonstrably positive impact for patients and communities elsewhere," he said. A commitment to innovation. The time-saving potential of the platform is significant: Surveys by the American Medical Association have shown that physicians often need to spend extra time on top of their normal working hours on tasks related to electronic health records, including transcription, inputting additional notes after a visit or cleaning up notes. Jennifer Schmidt, MD, an associate professor of medicine and associate chief of clinical operations in the WashU Medicine Division of General Medicine & Geriatrics, said she was surprised to find that even better than clearing her time, using the platform cleared her mind. "I had not anticipated how much it reduces your cognitive burden so you can focus on what your patients are saying and what it means for their care, rather than trying to multitask," said Schmidt. "For patients with more complex conditions, where there are detailed descriptions of their symptoms, this platform is really helpful because you're not focusing on trying to write down everything they say." Schmidt said she has seen how adoption of the platform has allowed her and her colleagues to close out their notes more quickly. She noted that WashU Medicine's proactive commitment to the technology positions it well to attract physicians who want to use these platforms in their practice. "Ambient AI like this is going to be adopted everywhere, and investing in it is really important," Schmidt said. "Physicians looking to work here want to have these platforms. This is medicine's future." To help clinicians adopt the technology, Abridge representatives visit the WashU Medicine and BJC Health campuses on a quarterly basis. Physicians and staff who want to learn more about using the ambient AI platform, attend a demonstration, or speak with clinical leaders can receive updates on upcoming campus visits by completing an online form.
