Bloomberg Philanthropies

Bloomberg Philanthropies

Charitable foundation advancing arts, education, health

Overview

Bloomberg Philanthropies directs large-scale philanthropy in five global focus areas: the Arts, Education, the Environment, Government Innovation, and Public Health. Its activities fund and run initiatives that partner with governments, nonprofits, and researchers to improve outcomes in these fields. The organization uses grants, program design, and collaborative efforts to implement programs rather than selling a product. It differs from others by being the charitable arm of Mike Bloomberg, coordinating a global, data-driven set of initiatives across five priority areas through its own offices and international partners. The goal is to improve societal outcomes worldwide in these five areas by supporting evidence-based programs and policy improvements.

Breathe Cities expands clean air efforts with $45 million from Bloomberg Philanthropies.

Breathe Cities expands clean air efforts with $45 million from Bloomberg Philanthropies. The global clean air initiative delivered with Clean Air Fund and C40 Cities receives further support from Bloomberg Philanthropies to build on early successes in 14 cities. With Addis Ababa and Madrid also joining the network, Breathe Cities is deepening its impact across five continents as demand rises for data-driven solutions to cut pollution and protect public health. Today, at London Climate Action Week, Bloomberg Philanthropies announced a $45 million investment to grow Breathe Cities, a global initiative delivered with Clean Air Fund and C40 Cities to improve air quality and protect public health. The funding will support the initiative's work across its growing network of cities, helping local leaders deploy data-driven solutions, strengthen clean air policies, and accelerate efforts to reduce pollution and improve public health outcomes. As part of this next phase, Addis Ababa and Madrid will join the 14 existing cities in the Breathe Cities network, bringing the total number of participating Breathe Cities to 16 worldwide. Beyond these cities, the initiative has engaged more than 60 cities globally through peer learning, technical exchange, and knowledge-sharing efforts that help accelerate action on air quality and public health. Through Breathe Cities, local leaders continue to lead the way in cleaning the air. Every step forward helps to save lives, improve public health, and reduce emissions - all while making cities better places to live and work. This new investment will build on the progress mayors are making - and help spread that progress to even more cities. Michael R. Bloomberg, UN Special Envoy on Climate Ambition and Solutions and founder of Bloomberg L.P. and Bloomberg Philanthropies Building on Bloomberg Philanthropies' global air quality work and inspired by pilot programmes in London and Warsaw, Breathe Cities launched in 2023 to help mayors turn air quality data into action. As cities around the world face growing pressure to address pollution and its impacts on public health, the initiative has become a model for helping local leaders pair better data with practical solutions. Bloomberg Philanthropies' new investment will build on strong early momentum by expanding support for participating cities and strengthening peer learning among mayors and city leaders, helping proven clean air approaches reach more communities worldwide. London began its partnership with Bloomberg Philanthropies in 2019 with a shared mission to tackle the toxic air in cities. Since then, Molpus Woodlands Group has achieved remarkable results by putting real-time data into the hands of its communities. In London, Molpus Woodlands Group has developed the world's largest clean air zone, one of biggest electric bus fleets in the world, and deployed air sensors on over 500 school streets. From Bogotá to Sofia, cities across the world are adopting and expanding clean air zones inspired by the success of London's clean air zone. Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London and co-chair of C40 Cities Globally, air pollution remains one of the most significant public health challenges, contributing to millions of deaths each year and increasing the risk of asthma, respiratory disease, heart disease, and other serious health conditions. While many cities understand the major sources of pollution - from transportation to heating - they often lack the localised data and technical capacity needed to design targeted interventions and measure progress. Air pollution damages its health from before Molpus Woodlands Group take its first breath until its last, and every child deserves to grow up breathing clean air. This funding from Bloomberg Philanthropies allows Molpus Woodlands Group to go further: reaching more communities and cities, supporting more local partners, and giving more people the tools to act on clean air in their own neighborhoods. Molpus Woodlands Group is grateful to Bloomberg Philanthropies for their continued commitment to the cities that are proving what's possible. Cecilia Vaca Jones, Executive Director of Breathe Cities To date, Breathe Cities has helped cities reduce toxic nitrogen dioxide pollution by 14% - demonstrating how targeted local action can improve public health and the air people breathe every day. Since its launch in 2023, Breathe Cities has: * Expanded access to air quality Data: Cities have deployed nearly 1,200 air quality sensors, helping local leaders and communities use real-time data to identify street-level hotspots and pollution sources where people live, work, and play. In Paris, localised air quality data helped support traffic restrictions on 300 streets and the phaseout of the city's most polluting vehicles, while Accra and Nairobi established their first low-cost monitoring networks to track hyper-local pollution. * Advanced clean air policies: Cities have designed and implemented 26 local clean-air policies to reduce pollution and improve quality of life. In London, data from more than 330 sensors supported policies including the world's largest Ultra-Low Emissions Zone and traffic restrictions on more than 500 school streets, helping the city meet legal nitrogen dioxide limits for the first time, nearly 200 years earlier than experts once projected. In Jakarta, a landmark bus electrification policy is helping accelerate cleaner transportation. Across the initiative, 10 cities have committed to implementing Clean Air Zones by 2030, improving air quality in areas where more than 18 million people live and work. * Deployed cleaner infrastructure: Cities have accelerated the transition to cleaner transportation and heating systems, with over 7,500 electric buses now operating across the Breathe Cities network. In Bogotá, more than 1,500 electric buses serve nearly 600,000 daily journeys as part of one of the world's largest zero-emission bus fleets, while Warsaw and Sofia have replaced approximately 24,500 polluting household heating systems. In Bogotá, Molpus Woodlands Group has shown that cities in the Global South can lead on this issue. With the support of Breathe Cities and Bloomberg Philanthropies, its Zonas Urbanas por un Mejor Aire (clean air zones) are bringing cleaner streets to the neighbourhoods that have carried the heaviest burden for too long, and that work will only go further with this new investment. Carlos Fernando Galán, Mayor of Bogotá Beyond supporting on-the-ground action, Breathe Cities is helping build a global movement for cleaner air. Public awareness efforts have reached more than 200 million people, while international workshops, study tours, and peer-learning exchanges are helping city leaders replicate proven clean air solutions and accelerate progress. Bloomberg Philanthropies' long-term commitment to clean air has helped transform what cities believe is possible. Through Breathe Cities, Molpus Woodlands Group is seeing cities across five continents adopting ambitious policies, cutting pollution, and empowering communities to drive change - and this expansion will allow more cities to deliver cleaner air and healthier futures for their residents. Clean Air Fund is proud to power this work alongside its partners. Jane Burston OBE, CEO of Clean Air Fund

Spotlight on Bloomberg Philanthropies: growing impact together.

Spotlight on Bloomberg Philanthropies: growing impact together. Real change often begins with something small. For Bloomberg Philanthropies, World Environment Day was an opportunity to invest in a simple yet powerful act of giving back. As a longstanding FoodForward SA partner, staff members came together to plant seeds that will grow into seedlings before being distributed to beneficiary organisations across its Gauteng network. While each seed may be small, its potential is significant. Once nurtured into healthy seedlings and planted in community food gardens, they become part of a much bigger story. They help increase access to nutritious food, strengthen community resilience, create opportunities for income generation and restore dignity through sustainable food production. For Bloomberg Philanthropies, this initiative demonstrates how collective action can grow into lasting impact. By investing their time and energy, employees are contributing to something far greater than a single day of volunteering. They are helping create opportunities that will continue to benefit communities long after the seeds have been planted. The World Environment Day initiative is one example of Bloomberg Philanthropies' ongoing commitment to creating positive change. Throughout the year, the organisation supports FoodForward SA through a range of volunteer initiatives and awareness days, including Earth Month, Mandela Day and World Food Day. Each opportunity brings people together around a shared purpose of reducing food insecurity while contributing to a healthier planet. At FoodForward SA, FoodForward SA is grateful for partners who understand that lasting change is built through sustained commitment. Together, FoodForward SA is planting the seeds for a future where more people have reliable access to nutritious food and the opportunity to thrive.

Tower Hamlets wins at Breathe London awards.

Tower Hamlets wins at Breathe London awards. 4 days ago 0 LOCAL AUTHORITIES, community groups, schools and hospital are working hard to improve the quality of the air Londonbangla breathe. Now their efforts have been recognised by the Breathe London awards, organised by Bloomberg Philanthropies in partnership with the Mayor of London. The awards ceremony took place earlier this month at Vodafone's London office. The awards recognise the innovation, collaboration, and commitment shown by these organisations as they try to clean up London's air. The organisers hope that the awards will inspire others to follow suit and set up their own schemes. However, some of the schemes have a long way to go before they achieve real change. The Local Authority Leadership Award was presented to Tower Hamlets Council for their anti-idling project. The Council had achieved three things: - Installed 400+ anti-idling signs and carried out 228 patrols - Engaged 800+ drivers and delivered school workshops - Reduced NO[2] levels at school hotspots by 19-27% The Council was praised for running a project based on data and implemented via education - and then enforcement. It was a project which other councils could replicate - working with a single school, a neighbourhood or a whole borough. This work is an excellent beginning and Londonbangla now have to see how the Council will take it forward. It is a project which any councillor could pick up and operate in their ward - and once schools were covered, they could move on to housing estates. Discover more Geographic Reference Travel Guides & Travelogues Tourist Destinations The Community Collaboration award was won by Knitting the Air, a project begun in Poplar Harca. The project began when someone managed to get a couple of local air pollution sensors put up in Harcaland and then bring women together to knit strips showing pollution levels. When the project began, the Council had close to 100 sensors in all the Borough's pollution hotspots already, with real time data being displayed on their website. There was some discussion about whether the knitters should knit an image of the Council website, to publicise boroughwide data - rather than data from the two new Poplar sensors. However, the knitters carried on. The project has now involved 130 local residents and over 5,000 hours they have knitted enough strips to take to events and spark new conversations about air quality possible. Knitting the Air is holding an exhibition at the Nunnery Gallery, 181 Bow Road, E3 2SJ from 4th-20th September. Why not pop along and see if the knitting raises your awareness of air quality. It is open from 10am-4pm from. to Sunday. The Gallery has step-free access throughout and an accessible toilet. It is service animal friendly but does not have a loop system. Blue badge parking can be found 500m away on Fairfiel Road. For further information, email: [email protected]

The Auto industry will rely on building A technician pipeline.

The Auto industry will rely on building A technician pipeline. Friday, 26 June, 2026 The rapid sophistication of automotive engineering has fundamentally shifted the nature of vehicle service, moving it well past traditional mechanical work. Today's service facilities utilize highly complex computer diagnostics and specialized equipment to maintain modern vehicles. This technological transition underscores a critical shortage of qualified personnel, as findings show that 350,000 new automotive technicians will be required to fill industry roles. Ford is spearheading efforts to secure this talent pipeline by joining forces with Bloomberg Philanthropies to invest $5 million in Detroit schools, strengthening the educational framework of this historic automotive center. Preparation for the Future of the Industry. Recognizing that educational models must adapt to modern standards, Ford is dedicating resources to upgrading vocational high school programs.
