Suffolk Dredging formed to transform ports shipping lanes. Posted on July 29, 2026 A new joint venture aims to transform dredging operations across one of the UK's most vital waterways. Harwich Haven Authority (HHA) and Boskalis Westminster have launched Suffolk Dredging LLP, combining HHA's knowledge of the Haven with Boskalis Westminster's expertise in dredging and marine services. HHA - which is a non-profit trust - navigates shipping through vital waterways leading to the UK's largest container port at Felixstowe, as well as the ports of Harwich and Ipswich. The new company will take on HHA's five-year maintenance dredging contract, ensuring navigable depths for vessels throughout the Haven. Suffolk Dredging has also secured the licence for Tiamat, an innovative dredging system developed by HHA. Paul de Jong, managing director of Boskalis Westminster, said: "We are delighted to be partnering with Harwich Haven Authority in Suffolk Dredging LLP. "This joint venture combines complementary strengths and creates a platform for delivering safe, efficient and innovative dredging solutions, both within the Haven and potentially in new markets around the world." In addition to the dredging contract, the Tiamat licence gives Suffolk Dredging a solid starting point to expand its services and technology offerings globally. More: Fressingfield farm hopes to revive hemp industry to make eco-friendly homes HHA and Boskalis are also partnering on the Beneficial Use of Dredged Sediment (BUDS) project, which aims to turn dredged material into a resource for environmental improvement. The project sees the two organisations working with conservation groups to reuse sediment from harbour dredging to restore saltmarsh habitat and improve coastal protection around the Haven.
Boskalis, Van Oord land large Swedish dredging project. Boskalis and Van Oord have been awarded a large dredging contract as part of the Malmporten Project in the Port of Luleå, Sweden. The contract has a total value of approximately EUR 500 million, split equally between Boskalis and Van Oord. The Swedish Maritime Administration and the Port of Luleå awarded the contract to Boskalis and Van Oord. Luleå, capital of the northern province of Norrbotten, is undergoing a significant green industrial development driven by investments in fossil-free steel and sustainable energy. The ongoing transformation of the port will strengthen its role as a key regional logistics hub supporting this transition. Deepening fairway and harbour basin. Under the contract, the joint venture will deepen the port's fairway and harbour basin, allowing it to accommodate vessels with a draught of up to 14.7 metres and a cargo capacity of up to 85,000 tonnes. This marks a significant increase of nearly two times the current capacity of 45,000 tonnes. This expansion will improve operational efficiency and contribute to lower emissions per tonne of transported cargo. Project execution is scheduled to commence in the spring of 2027. Activities will take place during the ice-free seasons and will be completed before mid-August 2030. The works involve dredging approximately 14 million cubic metres of material, including sand, silt, clay, moraine soils, boulders and significant quantities of fresh rock. Part of the dredged material will be reused for land reclamation to enable the development of a new deepwater port area. Equipment and mitigation measures. A broad range of specialised equipment will be deployed, including trailing suction hopper dredgers, backhoe dredgers, grab dredgers, and drill and blast platforms. Environmental protection is a key focus of the project. Mitigation measures will include the use of silt screens, bubble curtains, environmental buckets, turbidity monitoring and innovative dredging techniques to minimize environmental impact. Boskalis and Van Oord are familiar with the project area, having carried out preparatory dredging works in Luleå in 2024. These earlier activities involved the removal of approximately 1.5 million cubic metres of sediment, hard moraine soils, and large boulders typical of the northern Gulf of Bothnia. Contracts roundup: AtkinsRéalis JV wins £1.2bn Environment Agency coastal framework; Jacobs lands Yorkshire Water AI deal. Arup and Ordnance Survey reach milestone on national heat zoning model; Mott MacDonald to guide nuclear reactor through UK approvals 18 June 2026 | News | Climate change, Contracts, Digital, Energy transition, UK AtkinsRéalis joint venture wins £1.2bn Environment Agency coastal framework. A joint venture (JV), including AtkinsRéalis, has been appointed to the Environment Agency's new Beach Management framework, a national programme worth an estimated £1.2bn focused on beach management, coastal maintenance and flood-risk reduction across England. The JV between AtkinsRéalis, VolkerStevin and Boskalis Westminster will deliver coastal interventions including beach recharge, sediment recycling and ongoing maintenance, designed to reduce erosion and strengthen natural flood defences. The framework was signed in April and runs for six years to 2032. The Environment Agency says the programme is central to its long-term strategy for protecting England's coastline against climate change, sea-level rise and more frequent extreme weather. Jacobs lands Yorkshire Water AI services framework worth up to £32m. Jacobs has been appointed to Yorkshire Water's artificial intelligence (AI) services framework, a five-year deal the utility values at up to approximately £32m, supporting its use of data and AI across its water and wastewater services. Jacobs will provide specialist digital and AI consulting, working with Yorkshire Water to co-develop scalable solutions and digital products that support decision making, asset performance and operational efficiency. Yorkshire Water says it is entering a new phase of operational AI deployment, following investment in its data platform and in-house data science capability. This comes as Ofwat releases its AI adoption plan for the sector. Arup and Ordnance Survey reach milestone on national heat zoning model. Arup and Ordnance Survey (OS) have reached a milestone in developing England's national heat network zoning model, which will help at least ten English towns and cities to begin establishing heat network zones later this year. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) first appointed the two firms in 2024 under the Heat Network Zoning Consultancy Framework to help identify and develop the zones. The model, underpinned by OS data, determines where large low-carbon heat networks should be built. Arup and OS have now been awarded a second DESNZ contract to continue the work. DESNZ's Warm Homes Plan targets more than doubling heat demand met through heat networks to 7% by 2035, up from 3% today. Mott MacDonald to guide TerraPower reactor through UK approvals. Mott MacDonald is supporting nuclear innovation company, TerraPower, through the Generic Design Assessment (GDA) of its Natrium advanced reactor, a 345MW sodium-cooled fast reactor with integrated molten salt energy storage. The firm advised TerraPower on the UK regulatory system and GDA process through to acceptance of the application. It will now lead delivery of the core GDA documentation. The assessment, overseen by the Office for Nuclear Regulation, the Environment Agency and Natural Resources Wales, ensures that a design can be built, operated and decommissioned to UK safety, security and environmental standards. DESNZ and the Office for Nuclear Regulation accepted TerraPower's GDA application earlier this year, with the Step 1 review now under way. (C) Environment Analyst.
