Boston Water and Sewer Commission

Boston Water and Sewer Commission

Manages municipal water and sewer services

Overview

Boston Water and Sewer Commission (BWSC) operates and maintains New England’s oldest and largest water and sewer systems for Boston. It owns and runs the water supply and wastewater networks, delivering clean water and collecting/distributing sewage to more than one million residents, workers, students, shoppers, conventioneers, hospital patients and visitors daily. BWSC’s water and sewer services are provided through an integrated system of sourcing, treatment, distribution, collection and treatment facilities managed by the utility. Unlike many private utilities, BWSC is a municipal utility owned and operated by the city, giving it a public governance framework and long-standing, large-scale service to the Boston area. The company’s goal is to reliably supply safe drinking water and effective wastewater services, maintaining infrastructure and ensuring ongoing service to the community.
