CMCC Foundation

Climate change research center and policy

Overview

CMCC Foundation researches climate science and policy to understand climate variability, impacts, and mitigation/adaptation needs. It produces high-resolution simulations using global Earth system models and regional models, especially focused on the Mediterranean, to study effects on economy, agriculture, coastal and marine environments, water cycles, carbon cycle, and human health. It integrates studies on climate change with policy work, and provides technical-scientific support to policymakers, international organizations, and industry to help negotiate and coordinate cooperation. The foundation develops reliable models, checks simulations, and distributes tools and results to the scientific community and related stakeholders. Its goal is to supply accurate climate knowledge and practical instruments that inform decisions for adaptation, mitigation, and international collaboration.

Second edition of Princeton internship programme at CMCC concludes.

Second edition of Princeton internship programme at CMCC concludes. 07.31.2026 The research internship programme launched through the collaboration between the CMCC Foundation and Princeton University's High Meadows Environmental Institute (HMEI) has concluded its second edition, offering undergraduate students hands-on experience in climate and Earth system research. Following the successful launch of the CMCC-Princeton internship programme with its first undergraduate internship last year, two new students from Princeton University's High Meadows Environmental Institute (HMEI) have now completed their research placements at the CMCC headquarters in Bologna, working alongside researchers on projects spanning land surface modelling, climate dynamics and extreme weather events. Supervised by CMCC researcher Daniele Peano, Wunnyurit Ziblim investigated how different representations of soils and vegetation influence the exchange of carbon and water between land and atmosphere. Using the Community Land Model (CLM), the project compared alternative soil and vegetation configurations to assess their impact on variables such as soil moisture, leaf area index and evapotranspiration. The work highlighted how vegetation and soil processes play a key role in improving the representation of carbon and water cycles, particularly in climate-sensitive regions such as the Arctic. The second internship involved Ark Navin Bunyan, who worked under the supervision of Francesco Maicu and Lucia Gualtieri on the analysis of ECMWF ensemble forecasts of intense weather events originating over the Southern European seas. The project contributes to ongoing research aimed at improving the understanding and prediction of high-impact weather systems affecting the Mediterranean region. The internship programme offers Princeton undergraduate students the opportunity to work directly with CMCC scientists on cutting-edge climate research while contributing to ongoing scientific activities across different research groups. At the same time, the collaboration between CMCC and Princeton University fosters the exchange of knowledge, ideas and early-career researchers.

RFF-CMCC EIEE institute at WCERE 26. The World Congress of Environmental and Resource Economists (WCERE) is the international conference of environmental and resource economists organised every four years by the World Council of Environmental and Resource Economists Associations (WCEREA). The 2026 edition will be held in person in Carcavelos Campus in the city of Lisbon, Portugal, while also offering hybrid events and free online access to selected sessions, to enhance accessibility and foster global engagement within the environmental and resource economics community. The conference is hosted by the Nova School of Business and Economics (Nova SBE). RFF-CMCC EIEE institute actively participates in the Congress by contributing to and chairing several scientific sessions focused on key topics in cutting-edge climate research. At WCERE 2026, CMCC and Resources for the Future will announce the establishment of the Raymond J. Kopp Award for Outstanding Contributions to Climate Economics and Policy, a new biennial prize jointly promoted through their joint initiative, the European Institute on Economics and the Environment. Honouring the legacy of Raymond J. Kopp - whose decades of research at RFF exemplified the integration of rigorous economic analysis with real-world policy engagement - the award will recognise an outstanding peer-reviewed paper making a significant contribution to climate change economic policy, with special emphasis on international and cross-continental collaboration. The call for nominations will be launched in Autumn 2026, with nominations open until 31 January 2028, and the inaugural edition will be presented at the AERE Summer Conference in Asheville, NC, on 7-8 June 2028. CMCC at the London Climate Action Week: From wildfire prediction to risk management and adaptation.

CMCC at the London Climate Action Week: From wildfire prediction to risk management and adaptation. 06.09.2026 The 8th edition of London Climate Action Week, taking place from 20 to 28 June, brings together leading institutions, researchers, policymakers, businesses, and communities for Europe's largest city-wide climate festival and one of the world's largest independent climate change events. This year CMCC is co-organizing, together with the Leverhulme Centre for Wildfires, Environment and Society, a special panel on wildfire predictions and risk management in a changing climate on 24 June, 10-12AM BST, in what is a unique opportunity to showcase CMCC's expertise whilst partaking in London's unparalleled ecosystem of climate and non-climate organisations to accelerate global climate action. The CMCC event addresses the LCAW's key theme of understanding climate risk and building resilience. From emerging technologies to informed decisions the event will examine emerging evidence, technological innovation, and the broader implications of wildfire activity across climate, ecosystems, and society, bringing together researchers working at the forefront of fire science, risk analysis, and climate governance to explore the latest advances in responding to fires in a warming world. In response to increasingly urgent challenges, advances in science and technology are changing how CMCC - Centro Euro Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici understand and manage evolving fire risks. From Artificial Intelligence tools that help anticipate fires, to improved systems for tracking their impact on the global carbon cycle, researchers are developing new ways to support better decisions and more effective risk management. This event will examine emerging evidence, technological innovation, and the broader implications of wildfire activity across climate, ecosystems, and society, bringing together researchers working at the forefront of fire science, risk analysis, and climate governance to explore the latest advances in responding to fires in a warming world. Climate security and the Mediterranean: CMCC President Antonio Navarra at the Festival dell'Energia.

Climate security and the Mediterranean: CMCC President Antonio Navarra at the Festival dell'Energia. 05.29.2026 CMCC President Antonio Navarra, took part in the panel "Strategic Mediterranean. Energy, corridors and climate", organised in collaboration with OMEC and CMCC, speaking about climate security and resilience. The Mediterranean is increasingly at the centre of global energy strategies, amid new corridors, infrastructures, and the impacts of climate change. From 28 to 30 May 2026, Lecce hosted the 14th edition of the Festival dell'Energia, titled "Energy and Freedom. Europe put to the test of the future." At the heart of the dialogue was the concept of climate security, a political and policy framework that examines how the climate crisis affects global peace, stability, and human well-being. Navarra stressed how understanding climate change - the first major global problem to be tackled through the lens of resilience - provides useful tools for rethinking policies, investments, and infrastructures. "In an increasingly fragmented, chaotic and unpredictable world, dependencies - such as energy dependence - become a problem," Navarra said during his speech at the Festival dell'Energia in Lecce, underlining the need to reduce vulnerabilities and systemic risks. "Resilience means being able to absorb unpredictable shocks in such a way as to continue operating," he continued. "Climate security is a global concept and it is a contribution that climate science can offer to politics: how to be resilient to unexpected events." Looking to the future, Navarra pointed out that resilience must be extended to overall public policies, including energy and investment policies, in order to design systems capable of withstanding physical, economic, and geopolitical shocks. This message was echoed by Houda Ben Jannet Allal, Director General of the Observatoire Méditerranéen de l'Energie et du Climat (OMEC), who draws a direct link between climate security and energy security in the Mediterranean region. "We need to tackle climate issues also from the perspective of energy security. Stability and energy security are of fundamental importance in the Mediterranean," Allal stressed in her speech.
