CHLA's Dr. Beth A. Smith receives Distinguished Service Award from the American Physical Therapy Association's Academy of Acute Care Physical Therapy. May 13, 2026 by Parker Danowski The award honors Dr. Smith's leadership and effort supporting physical therapy research in acute care. Beth A. Smith, PT, DPT, PhD, physical therapist, investigator, and director of the Infant Neuromotor Control Laboratory at Children's Hospital Los Angeles, has been awarded the 2026 James Dunleavy Distinguished Service Award by the American Physical Therapy Association's Academy of Acute Care Physical Therapy (APTA Acute Care). APTA Acute Care, an organization of more than 3,700 licensed physical therapists and acute physical therapy experts across the nation, aims to foster excellence within acute care practice and to improve health and function. The award - a distinguished honor that has been given out by APTA Acute Care for the past 29 years - acknowledges an exceptional member of APTA Acute Care whose contributions to the organization's mission have been of outstanding value. As a physical therapist in Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics within CHLA's Behavioral Health Institute, Dr. Smith specializes in infant neuromotor control. Her lab's research explores the relationship between early brain development and the movement and neurodevelopmental outcomes of infants. Using technology like wearable sensors and eye gaze tracking to capture and analyze the detailed movements and behavior of infants, the lab seeks to better understand how patterns in these actions are representative of underlying brain development. Dr. Smith explores differences in these patterns between healthy infants and children at risk for developmental disabilities that affect movement, like cerebral palsy. Her goal is to use these findings to improve identification of atypical neurodevelopmental trajectories and develop early interventions to promote optimal neurodevelopment. Kevan Craig, DO, Chief of the Division of Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine at CHLA, speaks to the importance of Dr. Smith's work. "Dr. Smith's methods may detect signs of cerebral palsy (CP) in infants very early, as young as 1 month old. Due to brain plasticity, early intervention can significantly improve developmental delays, prevent secondary issues such as behavior problems and learning difficulties, enhance academic performance, and improve long-term quality of life. Ultimately, families are better able to support their child's development, manage stress, and advocate for needed services." In 2025, Dr. Smith and her colleagues presented work from a groundbreaking study which found that wearable leg sensors may detect signs of cerebral palsy (CP) in infants as young as 1 month old - earlier than traditional methods. These findings have recently been published in the journal Pediatric Neurology - Opens in a new window. "It is a privilege to conduct research at CHLA," Dr. Smith says. "We have a number of ongoing studies, the results of which we hope will inform better care and outcomes for kids at CHLA and beyond. Receiving this award was an honor, as it is always an honor to have one's efforts acknowledged, but the higher honor is providing new information to physical therapists and other health care providers that supports their efforts to help kids and their families."
