Vodafone Business backs UK sovereign AI model. Vodafone Business has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with London-based AI lab Cosine to join an industry coalition co-designing Lumen Sovereign, described as the UK's first fully sovereign frontier AI model. The collaboration will explore sovereign AI research, development and commercial adoption, with a focus on organisations operating in highly regulated and sensitive environments. Lumen Sovereign is being developed as a domestically trained foundation model designed to operate independently of foreign infrastructure. Cosine says the model will be trained entirely in the UK using Isambard-AI, with deployment readiness targeted for the end of 2026. The coalition aims to define use cases, security requirements and governance standards from the outset for sectors including government, defence, financial services, healthcare and critical national infrastructure. Vodafone Business plans to contribute expertise in secure connectivity, cloud, cyber security and enterprise deployment. Paul Rainford, Assistant Editor, Europe, Light Reading July 22, 2026 Telecom Italia (TIM), the operator that may soon be back in public hands if an acquisition bid by Poste Italiane receives shareholder approval, is launching a "Priority" connectivity platform for those wanting a higher level of service and, presumably, are prepared to pay for it. While light on detail, such as how much this service will cost, TIM's press release says that the network will recognize Priority customers and reserve "priority traffic management" for them, describing it as a "digital fast lane that complements the quality of the basic service." Although the launch carries a whiff of mobile network slicing, the first manifestation of the platform is WiFi Priority, which is available to customers with a fiber connection. From October, however, Priority will be extended to TIM's 5G mobile network and, says TIM, should prove invaluable in places with a high concentration of traffic, such as stadiums and concert venues. Scheduled for lift-off later this year, Lumen Sovereign is intended to operate independently of foreign infrastructure, offering greater peace of mind, it is hoped, to UK businesses - particularly those dealing in sensitive data. It's not an especially surprising move as Satellite Connect Europe is itself a joint venture between Vodafone and AST SpaceMobile. The service will in theory provide access to mobile communications in any part of Portuguese territory, including those bits not served by traditional terrestrial coverage. Boffins from Glasgow University claim they have found a way to help wireless signals in general - and forthcoming 6G network signals in particular - cut through the electromagnetic interference that is found in today's ultra-connected world. Key to the apparent breakthrough is something called reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, or RIS. These, say the researchers, are "smart surfaces" studded with programmable elements which can manipulate electromagnetic waves and ultimately boost signal strength. Research associate Saber Hassouna puts it like this: "A reconfigurable intelligent surface is like a mirror. When sunlight hits a mirror in your hand, you can tilt it to send the light towards the area you choose. RIS does the same thing with wireless signals. Instead of reflecting radio waves randomly, it intelligently concentrates the energy on the areas intended to receive it." VMO2 rails against net neutrality rules. A new report from Virgin Media O2 claims that net neutrality rules are stifling innovation and hampering 5G rollout, and could prevent so-called agentic AI from reaching its full potential in the UK. The rules, which have been the subject of much to-and-fro over the years, basically require telecoms providers to treat all traffic equally. The operator cites several scenarios where the reform of the rules could prove beneficial, such as allowing a user to prioritize an important video call over other apps. Second-quarter adjusted EBITDAaL (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization, after leases) at KPN fell by 0.3% year-over-year, to €668 million (US$762 million), impacted, said the Dutch operator, by one-off items relating to the sale of IP addresses and a favorable intellectual property rights settlement in the prior year's earnings. Arcep, the French communications regulator, has pointed the finger at networks that suffer from what it calls "persistently sub-standard failure and connection failure rates," with Iliad, Altice and Altitude coming in for particular criticism. The regulator said that while some "rehabilitation plans" for these networks have already been completed, it urges operators to redouble their efforts in municipalities where sevice quality indicators remain below par. Vodafone Business joins UK sovereign frontier AI model consortium. Telcos are well represented in a new UK initiative aiming to give its critical industries their very own AI model. July 22, 2026 It's called Lumen Sovereign and was announced by UK AI firm Cosine a few weeks ago, positioning it as 'Britain's first fully sovereign frontier AI for critical sectors.' Since 'frontier' in the context of AI refers to the most advanced models, that descriptor might be a touch hyperbolic, but why not aim high? At a time when even allied countries don't hesitate to harness domestic industries in pursuit of their own geopolitical industries, it makes sense to try to be as self-reliant as possible. The problem is that we're nowhere near as good as the US and China in things like technology and manufacturing, so that's easier said than done. But you've got to start somewhere and it seems Lumen Sovereign is the UK's main such effort in the AI domain. "AI is the single most important technology of our generation," declared Cosine CEO Alistair Pullen at its launch. "Enterprises are increasingly waking up to the risk of being wholly dependent on foreign providers for this technology. Vendor lock in creates security risk, dependency risk and cost escalation risks. Cosine is addressing those risks by building a model that is fully trained on UK soil and available into air gapped environments at a far more efficient price point than OpenAI and Anthropic alternatives." Among the launch partners were BT and Telefonica, who both do plenty of R&D in sectors adjacent and complementary to telecoms. "As AI becomes a foundational technology for the UK economy, our customers need confidence that the systems they depend on are secure, trusted and aligned with their requirements," said Chris Keon, BT's Director of Group Innovation, at the time. Now Vodafone has joined the fun, through the medium of a memorandum of understanding. "By joining Cosine's industry coalition, Vodafone Business is helping to advance an important initiative to establish sovereign AI capabilities in the UK, working alongside other industry leaders to create the trusted digital foundations businesses and public sector organisations need to innovate with confidence," said Nick Gliddon, Business Director at VodafoneThree, before stressing how important connectivity is to AI. Vodafone backs AI platform to keep government data off foreign systems. Vodafone Business has joined a coalition developing Britain's first AI model to keep sensitive government and business data under government control. The project will provide a secure AI platform that government departments, defence organisations and operators of critical infrastructure can use without sensitive information being processed on foreign-controlled systems. An MoU has been signed with London AI company Cosine to help develop Lumen Sovereign. This is an AI model that will be built, trained and operated entirely in the UK. The project is backed by the UK Government's £500 million Sovereign AI programme. It is aimed at organisations handling highly sensitive information. These include government departments, defence, healthcare, financial services and operators of critical national infrastructure. Lumen Sovereign is intended to run on UK-based computing infrastructure, unlike AI services hosted overseas It can operate in isolated networks that are physically disconnected from the internet. The aim is to reduce the security and national security risks of sending sensitive data to foreign-owned AI platforms or cloud services. Vodafone Business will contribute expertise in secure communications, cloud services and cyber security. Cosine will lead development of the AI model. The companies will also work with other coalition members on security standards, governance and potential commercial applications. The model is expected to be trained using the Isambard-AI supercomputer, with deployment targeted by the end of this year. Isambard-AI is claimed to be the UK's most powerful public AI supercomputer, operated by the University of Bristol and housed at the National Composites Centre. UK industry giants join forces to develop sovereign frontier AI model on Isambard-AI. 8th June 2026 British artificial intelligence (AI) company Cosine has brought together some of the UK's largest organisations to help design Lumen Sovereign, a new frontier AI model that will be trained entirely within the UK. The project is being developed under the government's £500m Sovereign AI programme and will run exclusively on Isambard-AI, one of Europe's most powerful supercomputing systems. Among the organisations participating in the design phase are Babcock International Group, BT, Lloyds Banking Group, London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG), NatWest Group, PwC, Thales UK, and Telefónica Tech UK&I. The companies have signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) with Cosine and will help shape the model's technical requirements, governance framework and real-world applications. The initiative aims to provide UK organisations with greater control over how advanced AI systems are trained, deployed and managed. The frontier AI model is being designed to support complex, highly regulated workflows where data sensitivity has historically limited AI adoption. Planned applications include cybersecurity operations, adversarial testing, know-your-customer (KYC) and anti-money laundering (AML) investigations, clinical trial management, legal document analysis and healthcare administration. To support these use cases, Cosine has assembled an extensive collection of domain-specific training data covering more than 30 regulated industry workflows. The company says this specialised dataset will help the model meet the diverse requirements of coalition members across finance, defence, healthcare and professional services.
