Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Art Basel 2026 brought over $10 million primary sales and 57 transactions.
  • The May 2025 opening of 533 West 19th Street expands Chelsea exhibition capacity.
  • Elizabeth Mulholland joined Los Angeles in September 2026, strengthening West Coast leadership.

What critics are saying

  • Art-market demand remains cyclical; 2026 sales depend on fairs and wealthy collectors.
  • Closing 69th Street in July 2026 shows costly space rationalization after Chelsea expansion.
  • If collector spending weakens further, multi-continent overhead can pressure margins and force retrenchment.

What makes David Zwirner Gallery unique

  • David Zwirner spans New York, London, Paris, Hong Kong, and Los Angeles in 2026.
  • The gallery combines primary and secondary markets, plus books, podcasts, and museum-grade programming.
  • Recent additions like Louis Fratino and Robert Therrien deepen its blue-chip, estate-driven roster.

Longtime Andrew Kreps Gallery partner Elizabeth Mulholland moves to David Zwirner.

Longtime Andrew Kreps Gallery partner Elizabeth Mulholland moves to David Zwirner. August 7, 2026 4:33 pm Elizabeth Mulholland is set to take on the role of senior director at David Zwirner Gallery's Los Angeles outpost, according to ARTnews. The move follows Mulholland's two-decade tenure at Andrew Kreps Gallery in New York, where she served as a director and subsequently became a partner. Speaking to ARTnews, Andrew Kreps conveyed his gratitude to Mulholland, stating: "It's a big life decision, and I'm supportive. I genuinely wish Liz the best." Mulholland told ARTnews that watching the gallery's growth "has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. I'm grateful to Andrew for these two incredible decades." The westward shift is a major scaling up for Mulholland, and represents a transition from a one-city operation that managed around 40 artists to a gallery with locations in three continents and a roster of more than 80 artists. "One of the reasons I'm so excited to be joining David Zwirner in September is that I've always recognized the humanity at the heart of the gallery," said Mulholland. David Zwirner opened its first Los Angeles outpost in 2023, within the city's Melrose Hill neighborhood. The gallery, which was founded in New York by the eponymous German mega-dealer in 1993, later opened its flagship Los Angeles space, designed by architect Annabelle Selldorf, in May 2024. Mulholland remarked that she is drawn to how artist-driven the Los Angeles scene is. "So many artists have stayed in the city after attending school there, creating a community with deep, long-standing relationships and an unusually collaborative spirit." She added: "It's a place where artists genuinely support one another, and I'm excited to become part of that community."
