Delta Air Lines marks 20 years in Ghana with courtesy call on Ga Mantse, borehole donation. Spread the love Delta Air Lines has marked its 20th anniversary in Ghana with a courtesy call on the Ga Mantse, His Royal Majesty Nii Teiko Tsuru II, and the commissioning of a borehole facility for residents of the Ga Mashie community in James Town. The visit to the Ga Mantse Palace in Accra formed part of activities commemorating the airline's two decades of operations in Ghana and highlighted its commitment to strengthening relationships with local communities and institutions. During the meeting, discussions reportedly focused on collaboration, community impact and the importance of maintaining strong institutional partnerships to support sustainable growth and long-term operations in Ghana. Delta Air Lines stated that its success in Ghana over the past 20 years has been built on meaningful engagement with communities and stakeholders who have contributed to the airline's growth and presence in the country. As part of the anniversary celebrations, the airline also commissioned a borehole facility for the Ga Mashie community in James Town at the Ga Paramount Stool House in the King Tackie Tawiah area. The project, unveiled in the presence of traditional leaders and community representatives, is expected to benefit more than 2,000 residents, particularly women and children, by improving access to clean and safe drinking water. According to Delta Air Lines, the facility is intended to help reduce the burden associated with water collection while contributing to improved health and hygiene conditions within the community. The airline said the initiative reflects its broader commitment to supporting communities beyond aviation operations. Over the years, Delta has invested in several social intervention projects in Ghana, including initiatives in health, education, youth development and women's empowerment through partnerships with organisations such as Breast Care International and Junior Achievement Ghana.
Airlines' wave of new routes to summer travel demand 2026. This May, airlines worldwide are launching numerous new routes as the summer travelling season starts and demand in the major international markets is steadily growing. May 2026 will be one of the busiest months in terms of new routes being introduced, especially in transatlantic networks between North America and Europe. Some of the leading airlines are increasing their services by adding new long-haul and seasonal flights. Delta Air Lines has also introduced new flights between Seattle and Rome as well as Barcelona, which has solidified its position in Europe. The airline is also introducing flights between Boston and Madrid and Nice as well as new summer flights between New York and destinations like Porto and Sardinia. United Airlines is still pursuing its policy of flying to less congested European destinations. New routes are Newark to Bari and Santiago de Compostela, and Washington Dulles to Reykjavik. The airline has also started to fly between Newark and Glasgow during the summer period. Another American Airlines that is expanding its European network is the new daily flights between Philadelphia and Budapest and Prague. Moreover, the airline has also initiated flights between Dallas/Fort Worth and Athens and Zurich, providing travellers with more direct flights to Central and Southern Europe. In the meantime JetBlue is expanding into Europe with a new seasonal flight between Boston and Milan, that adds further competition to the ever-growing transatlantic leisure market. These new services are indicative of a broader trend within the aviation industry whereby airlines are not only targeting major cities but also smaller destinations to accommodate the increasing passenger numbers. A lot of the routes are seasonal and have been created to accommodate peak summer traffic and provide the passenger with more choice and flexibility. All in all, the initiation of approximately 50 new routes in this month is a sign of great confidence in the recovery of global travelling and the further development of the international air connection. Michelle Buttigieg honored as Destination Leader of the Year as Malta enters a new era for North American travel. A major milestone for Mediterranean tourism - and a significant development for American travelers seeking new cultural horizons - Michelle Buttigieg has been named Destination Leader of the Year at the prestigious Global Traveler Leisure Lifestyle Awards Gala, held at the InterContinental Miami. The award recognizes her long-standing leadership in elevating Malta's profile across North America and transforming the destination into one of the Mediterranean's fastest-growing travel choices for U.S. and Canadian visitors. Francis X. Gallagher, CEO and Publisher of Global Traveler, praised Buttigieg's impact, noting her role in educating the American market and helping travelers discover Malta as a must-visit destination. Under her leadership, arrivals from North America have more than quadrupled since 2014, reflecting Malta's growing appeal as a premium yet authentic European destination. A New Travel Gateway: Nonstop Flights from New York to Malta This recognition comes as Malta enters a transformative new chapter in accessibility. For the first time, travelers will be able to fly nonstop from New York to Malta with Delta Air Lines. The inaugural seasonal service will operate from June 7 through October 23, 2026, departing from John F. Kennedy International Airport. To further support this historic launch, Delta Vacations has introduced its first dedicated Malta travel program, offering curated packages that combine flights, hotels, and immersive island experiences. This development marks a turning point for American travelers - bringing Malta closer than ever before. Malta: A Mediterranean Archipelago of Culture and Discovery Set in the heart of the Mediterranean, Malta is composed of three distinct islands - Malta, Gozo, and Comino - each offering its own blend of history, coastline, and culture. From ancient, fortified cities and UNESCO World Heritage sites to crystal-clear waters and vibrant culinary traditions, Malta continues to attract travelers seeking both depth and authenticity in their journeys. Leadership Recognized and a Destination Transformed During the awards ceremony, Gallagher highlighted Buttigieg's role in reshaping Malta's image in the United States - from a little-known destination to one now firmly on the radar of luxury and cultural travelers. A key turning point in Malta's tourism story is the shift in perception itself: what was once "Where is Malta?" has become "When is the best time to visit?" This evolution reflects not only strategic marketing but also Malta's expanding hospitality offerings, cultural depth, and immersive visitor experiences. Malta's Commitment to Inclusion and Cultural Openness In addition to Buttigieg's recognition, VisitMalta received the Outstanding Social Responsibility Award, underscoring the destination's continued commitment to inclusivity and accessibility. Malta has consistently ranked #1 on ILGA-Europe's Rainbow Map for ten consecutive years and is widely recognized for its progressive policies and welcoming environment for LGBTQIA+ travelers. The island also hosts annual Pride celebrations in Valletta, reinforcing its position as one of Europe's most inclusive destinations. A Hidden Layer: Jewish Heritage in Malta For readers of the New York Jewish Travel Guide, Malta also offers a fascinating and often overlooked layer of Jewish heritage in the Mediterranean. Beyond its well-known history and coastal beauty, the islands hold meaningful traces of Jewish life that span centuries and offer a unique cultural journey for curious travelers. Highlights include the Rabat Catacombs, where carved menorahs provide early evidence of Jewish presence in Malta, and historic Jewish cemeteries in Kalkara, Ta' Braxia, and Marsa. Located in Ta' Xbiex, just outside Valletta, the synagogue - established in 2000 - is the first Jewish-owned property in Malta in over 500 years and serves as the center of Jewish community life today. Together, these sites reflect Malta's layered history, where Jewish heritage forms part of the island's broader Mediterranean story. For travelers seeking something meaningful, intimate, and off the beaten path, Malta offers a rare opportunity to connect history, culture, and discovery in one unforgettable journey. Delta Air Lines unveils upgraded premium suites. Delta Air Lines has unveiled its new Delta One suites for business class customers on long-haul flights as the company's premium revenue surges. The updated Delta One suites will debut on the airline's Airbus A350-1000 aircraft, which it will begin receiving in early 2027. Delta One cabins on Airbus A330-200/300 aircraft will also be upgraded to include privacy doors. "Every time a customer boards a Delta flight, the experience and surroundings should feel familiar - creating a sense of home and comfort when you're away," said Mauricio Parise, Delta's vice president of Brand Experience. "That was the driving factor behind every intentional design feature and investment we made in developing our brand new A350-1000 experience, which we extended through nose-to-tail upgrades of our A330-200/300s and will continue to roll out across our fleet." Join its community of decision-makers. No card required These Delta One upgrades are part of Delta's ongoing fleet upgrade investments, which the company said have totalled more than US$1 billion. The A350-1000 Delta One suites will feature a 24-inch entertainment screen, a longer lay-flat bed, and new stowage options. Both the A350-1000 and A330-200/300 will include refreshment stations for Delta One passengers. Delta's premium revenue grew 14% year-over-year to $5.36 billion in the March quarter, it said in last week's earnings release, driven in part by strong corporate demand for its premium products. Rival United Airlines also said last month that it would revamp its business class offerings, including both a new version of its Polaris suite for long-haul flights and a 'basic' business class tier with lower fares. Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) shares closed 1.1% lower at $67.05, but climbed 0.2% after-hours. Its market capitalisation is $44.05 billion.
Airlines are raising fees and cutting flights as volatile oil and jet fuel prices surge following Middle East conflicts. Oil briefly topped $119 per barrel before dropping below $95 after a brief ceasefire, but uncertainty persists. Delta expects fuel costs to add $2 billion in operating expenses this quarter alone. United faces potential additional annual costs of $11 billion if prices remain elevated. Global jet fuel prices rose to $209 per barrel last week from roughly $99 in February. Major carriers including Delta, United, Southwest and JetBlue have increased checked baggage fees. International airlines like Cathay Pacific, Air India and Emirates have also raised surcharges. United is cutting approximately 5% of planned flights, whilst Delta is reducing summer capacity by 3.5%. Budget airlines and price-conscious travellers will likely feel the impact most acutely, though premium passengers won't escape higher costs.
