EV drivers in Los Angeles have a new fast charging station where they can quickly top up their cars' batteries. EVgo, one of the biggest charging networks in the country, says its new site on S Robertson Blvd is the largest non-Tesla EV charging station in the City of LA, with a total of 10 stalls and 20 plugs that can deliver up to 350 kilowatts. That's great news, but what makes this location a little more interesting is that it still offers CHAdeMO support. That's the type of charge port used by the two previous generations of the Nissan Leaf, as well as some Japanese-made plug-in hybrids, like the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. It means that older EVs, which now cost very little on the used market, are still getting some love, even as the charging industry is moving at lightning speed on the CCS and NACS fronts. The two CHAdeMO ports at EVgo's new LA station can deliver up to 100 kW, with the remaining 18 cables offering CCS connectors. The power levels are also neatly distributed, with two 100-kilowatt stalls, three 200-kW stalls, and five 350-kW stalls. As you may have noticed, there are no NACS cables here, but that's not quite an issue, as NACS-equipped EVs can use charging adapters with CCS chargers. Meanwhile, using a CHAdeMO adapter on a CCS station is very expensive and not recommended by the CHAdeMO association. That said, EVgo is one of the few companies that have started installing Tesla Superchargers. The stations use V4 dispensers that can deliver up to 500 kW at 1,000 volts, and they're automatically integrated into the Tesla in-app navigation system. NACS plugs are also being added to existing stations. What do you think? Located just off the Santa Monica Freeway in the Mid-City neighborhood, the new Los Angeles location caters to a busy, central corridor where drivers can plug in while grabbing a meal, running errands, or heading across town. The station is within walking distance of several restaurants, grocery stores, and shopping options. According to the Department of Energy's Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC), EVgo currently operates 1,175 EV fast charging stations in the U.S., with a total of 5,185 individual ports available to the public. Most stations offer Plug & Charge functionality, which means the charging session will start automatically after plugging in, as long as there is a payment method set up in the user's account.

Public charging is a much more pleasant experience when you have something useful to do while the car is plugged in. Buying groceries beats waiting around and watching the battery percentage creep upward, especially if it means avoiding a separate trip just to charge. That's why more retailers are adding fast charging for customers to top up their EVs while checking items off their shopping lists. EVgo is expanding its footprint through its existing partnership with shopping center owner Regency. The companies plan to add more than 400 fast-charging stalls at Regency properties across the United States, focusing on centers with grocery stores. These won't be the first EVgo chargers in Regency parking lots. The operator installed its first chargers at a Regency location in 2020 and already runs more than 150 stalls across its properties. However, the announcement signals a substantial expansion of that arrangement. More on this. The new sites will feature up to 24 high-power chargers each. Planned markets include Colorado, Florida, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Virginia, with other states that weren't specifically named also in the mix. Neither company provided a completion deadline or a full list of locations, though. It also follows another EVgo shopping center expansion. In August, it announced that it was adding at least 500 additional stalls through its partnership with Brixmor Property Group. That rollout is intended to bring EVgo charging to at least 90 Brixmor shopping centers. In another deal, Kroger and EVgo announced plans to install at least 150 fast-charging stalls annually through 2035, covering supermarket brands including Fred Meyer, Harris Teeter and Smith's. The Regency is clearly part of that broader push to make charging part of the weekly routine. The latest announcement doesn't specify charging rates or power ratings. Its recently confirmed rollout at Brixmor shopping centers and Kroger lists 350-kilowatt chargers, so that may be the peak output of the chargers installed at Regency locations. Putting chargers near groceries is certainly sensible, but the experience still needs to be painless for them to be popular.
