Empatica creates AI-enabled wearable devices and accompanying software for remote patient monitoring and health research. Its medical-grade wearables continuously collect physiological and behavioral data in real time, which can be analyzed to monitor conditions, forecast potential health issues, and support research projects. The devices and subscription-based software work together: hardware collects data from sensors and the software analyzes it with AI to provide actionable health insights, alerts, and trends for patients, clinicians, and researchers. The company differentiates itself by offering clinically validated hardware and a platform that integrates data collection with ongoing software services, serving universities, hospitals, companies, and charities. Its goal is to provide reliable, real-time health information that helps improve patient care, advance medical research, and enable proactive health management.

Empatica has received 510(k) clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration for its Health Monitoring Platform for Parkinson's disease. The clearance builds on Empatica's 2025 acquisition of PKG Health and expands the company's clinical-grade monitoring platform beyond epilepsy and sleep. The platform uses clinical-grade wearables, a patient app, cloud technology, and a clinician portal to monitor Parkinson's symptoms continuously. It provides validated measures of bradykinesia, dyskinesia, tremor, sleep, and medication compliance. Research has shown that adding wearable data to patient demographics and clinical scores improved the accuracy of predicting optimal medication regimens by 33%, reaching 86.9% accuracy. The platform's algorithms have been studied in more than 70 peer-reviewed publications and used across over 150 hospitals and clinical sites worldwide. This marks Empatica's twelfth FDA clearance.

In an era where artificial intelligence is reshaping industries and daily life, a new frontier is emerging: Emotion AI, also known as affective computing. This technology aims to bridge the gap between human emotions and machine intelligence, changing how we interact with computers and digital systems. Emotion AI encompasses a range of technologies designed to detect, interpret, and respond to human emotional states. These systems use computer vision, voice analysis, biometric sensors and advanced algorithms to discern users’ feelings and moods, opening up new possibilities for personalized and empathetic digital experiences. The foundations of this field trace back to the late 1990s, with pioneering work by researchers like Rosalind Picard at the MIT Media Lab. However, recent advancements in machine learning and sensor technologies have accelerated progress, attracting interest from tech giants and startups alike
