IMFA predicts major capacity boost as Kalinganagar Greenfield project nears commissioning. IBNS-CMEDIA: Indian Metals & Ferro Alloys Ltd (IMFA), India's largest producer of ferro chrome, on Tuesday said its greenfield expansion project at Kalinganagar (KNR 1) is progressing on schedule after receiving the required Consent to Operate (CTO) and Factory Licence. The company said the process of commissioning the first furnace is underway, with hot metal tapping expected in the third week of August 2026. The second furnace is likely to be commissioned in September. IMFA also said all four furnaces at its KNR 2 facility are now operational, helping the company achieve quarterly ferro chrome production of more than 80,000 tonnes for the first time. During the quarter, the company dispatched around 14,000 tonnes of material, making a significant contribution to revenue and profitability. As part of its sustainability strategy, IMFA has signed a long-term offtake agreement with Enfinity Global for an additional 65 MWp of hybrid renewable energy capacity, expected to become operational by June 2027. With the new arrangement, nearly 40 per cent of the company's total energy consumption is expected to come from non-fossil fuel sources by the middle of next year. The company also said its ethanol project at Therubali is nearing completion. While the project has faced delays due to the secondary impact of geopolitical uncertainties and monsoon-related disruptions, IMFA said there has been no material impact on its financial performance. The trial run of the ethanol unit is now expected to begin in October 2026. Commenting on the quarterly performance, Subhrakant Panda, Managing Director of IMFA, "With the Greenfield Project expected to be fully commissioned and stabilised by Q3, The Canadian Media will close out the year with operating smelting capacity of more than half a million tonnes.

Brookfield Asset Management has launched Lumara Energy, a renewable energy platform in India, with plans to invest $600 million. The platform will develop an initial portfolio exceeding 6 gigawatts across solar, wind, and battery storage projects. Lumara is backed by Brookfield's Catalytic Transition strategy, which focuses on clean energy investments in emerging markets. The platform aims to address deployment constraints in India, including delays in power-purchase agreements, lengthy grid connection queues, and protracted land acquisition processes. Lumara will expedite project execution by securing land and grid interconnection before finalising power-purchase agreements. It will also provide credit solutions to developers to accelerate project pipelines. Vignesh Nandakumar, former CEO Asia at Enfinity Global, will lead the platform. India targets 500 gigawatts of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.
Italy's Feralpi has commissioned a 15.5 MW solar power station. By 2025, renewable energy sources had already met 56% of the company's energy needs. The Italian steel group Feralpi Group and Enfinity Global have announced the commissioning of a new 15.5 MW solar power station in the province of Ferrara. The launch of the facility activates a previously signed ten-year power purchase agreement (PPA). This was reported by SteelOrbis The new solar power station is equipped with 26,572 bifacial panels fitted with sun-tracking systems. The plant is expected to generate 23.3 GWh of clean electricity per year. This will help meet part of the energy needs of Feralpi's industrial sites in northern Italy and reduce CO[2] emissions by approximately 6,300 tonnes annually. The implementation of this project is a key component of Feralpi's environmental and energy strategy. By 2030, the company aims to reduce specific greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1, 2 and 3) from its core metallurgical production by 50 per cent, as well as to further reduce absolute Scope 3 emissions by 25 per cent. According to analysts, by 2025 renewable energy sources had already met 56 per cent of Feralpi's energy needs, enabling the company to exceed its 50 per cent target for 2030 ahead of schedule. Furthermore, between 2023 and 2025, the group implemented an investment programme worth over €500 million, aimed at improving energy efficiency, electrifying processes and reducing emissions. According to Giovanni Pasini, Managing Director of the Feralpi Group, the procurement of renewable energy is one of the key tools for supporting the electrification of production and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. For its part, Enfinity Global emphasised that the launch of the solar power plant marks a successful transition from the signing of the PPA to the direct supply of green electricity for industrial needs. As reported by GMK Center, the Nigerian steel company African Industries Group has been granted 500 hectares of land in Niger State (Nigeria) for the construction of a new facility. This plant is expected to become the country's largest solar-powered steelworks.
