Eurostar brings live rail search to ChatGPT. Eurostar is bringing international rail planning directly into ChatGPT, becoming the first train operator to launch an official app in the conversational platform across the UK, Belgium and the Netherlands. Rolling out globally this summer, the Eurostar app allows travellers to search for trains, compare departure times and check current fares without first visiting a booking website or opening another travel app. ChatGPT presents real-time journey information before directing the traveller to eurostar.com to complete the purchase. It is a relatively simple integration for now - but an important one. Eurostar is placing its timetable and fare data inside the environment where a growing number of travellers are already deciding where to go and how to get there. Planning by conversation. Travellers connect their ChatGPT account to the Eurostar app and can then ask questions naturally, by typing or speaking. A request might be as straightforward as: "Find me a morning train from London to Paris next Friday." But conversational search becomes more useful when the journey is less settled. A traveller could ask for the best departure time for a weekend in Brussels, compare Amsterdam and Paris for a short break, or look for an itinerary that avoids a very early start. Traditional booking engines expect users to supply structured information: origin, destination, dates and passenger numbers. Conversational interfaces can begin earlier in the decision process, when someone has an idea rather than a finished itinerary. The current Eurostar experience remains focused on discovery and search. Users cannot complete the entire transaction inside ChatGPT; they are transferred to Eurostar's website to book. That handover protects Eurostar's existing payment and customer-service infrastructure, although it also interrupts the smooth, end-to-end experience that travellers may eventually expect from AI assistants. AI traffic is becoming measurable. Eurostar's own figures explain why the company is moving now. Traffic to eurostar.com from AI platforms increased fivefold between January 2025 and June 2026. In June 2026, ChatGPT generated 85% of all AI-referred visits to the website. More significantly, AI applications accounted for between 0.8% and 1% of Eurostar website bookings between May and July 2026. One per cent may sound modest, but this is no longer experimental traffic consisting only of curious users. It is beginning to produce transactions. François Le Doze, Chief Commercial Officer at Eurostar, said: "Search habits are changing quickly, and travellers are increasingly using conversational tools to research and plan their journeys. "By launching the Eurostar app in ChatGPT, Alertify is choosing to be present where its customers are already searching for information and planning their travel. "Our goal remains the same: to make international rail travel simpler, more accessible and more attractive." Eurostar plans to develop the app with destination discovery, network visualisation, travel inspiration and easier access to selected fares and offers. It will also consider other conversational assistants as customer adoption grows. A new travel storefront. The launch sits within a broader shift in travel distribution. ChatGPT is evolving from a general-purpose assistant into a platform that can host interactive third-party services. OpenAI introduced its Apps SDK with travel companies including Booking.com and Expedia among its early partners, giving travellers access to live commercial information inside a conversation. OpenAI describes these apps as experiences users can interact with directly inside ChatGPT. Rail is following the same route. Trainline already offers an AI-powered Travel Assistant for journey-specific questions and has also launched a ChatGPT integration for route and fare discovery. Its position differs from Eurostar's: Trainline aggregates multiple rail and coach operators, while Eurostar controls the customer relationship and the trains being sold. Trainline's existing assistant also focuses on practical support, such as ticket conditions, refunds, and journey guidance. More on Alertify Follow the latest Eurostar news High-speed rail updates, cross-border routes, passenger services, station expansions, pricing changes, and travel developments across the Eurostar network. For travellers comparing several European operators, an aggregator may still be more practical. Eurostar's app is naturally limited to its own network, which covers more than 20 destinations across the UK, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. It will not replace a broader multimodal planner, particularly for journeys requiring regional trains, buses or flights. Eurostar carried 20 million passengers in 2025 and currently operates 51 high-speed trains. Its future fleet will include up to 50 Alstom Celestia double-deck trains, scheduled to enter service from May 2031. The ChatGPT app is therefore not a substitute for capacity investment; it is a new digital entrance to a network Eurostar is already preparing to expand. Conclusion. Eurostar's real achievement is not putting a chatbot beside a timetable. It is recognising that travel discovery is moving upstream - from search engines and booking forms into conversations. Booking.com, Expedia and Trainline are pursuing the same behavioural shift, but operators such as Eurostar have a particular advantage: they own the inventory, operational data and post-booking relationship. The next competitive step will be connecting those assets more deeply. Disruption alerts, ticket changes, loyalty benefits and complete in-chat checkout would make the experience genuinely useful beyond inspiration. Until then, Eurostar's ChatGPT app is best understood as a new storefront rather than a full travel agent. But storefronts matter - especially when customers are already gathering outside them.
Simon Calder gives 'absolutely scandalous' Channel Tunnel update. Holidaymakers face the prospect of escaping the eye-watering cost of travelling by train to Paris. By Rory Poulter, Personal Finance Reporter 14:47, Tue, Aug 18, 2026 Updated: 14:49, Tue, Aug 18, 2026 Eurostar staff to strike in row over work-life balance. Travellers could soon have a choice of rival high-speed trains through the Channel Tunnel - raising hopes of cheaper fares after years of Eurostar dominance. Holidaymakers face the prospect of escaping the eye-watering cost of travelling by train to Paris as Virgin Trains and Trenitalia make moves to challenge Eurostar. Virgin has already cleared a major regulatory hurdle and is planning to launch services from London to Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam from 2030. And now Italian rail giant Trenitalia France is also pressing ahead with plans to run high-speed trains through the Channel Tunnel, potentially creating a three-way battle for passengers. Take advantage of this last-minute offer with up to 50% off through Palladium Rewards using the promo code PROMO!Palladium Hotel Group | Sponsored The prospect has been welcomed by travel expert Simon Calder, who described the amount passengers can be forced to pay for Eurostar tickets as "absolutely scandalous" - particularly when booking at short notice. Speaking on The Travel Expert, the Telegraph's travel podcast, Calder said the arrival of competition could finally change the economics of travelling between London and Paris. He told co-host Greg Dickinson: "For the first time since Eurostar launch, we're going to see some competition, so in theory this should mean cheaper fares and more options." Read its Privacy Policy The prospect has been welcomed by travel expert Simon Calder (Image: Getty) Eurostar currently dominates the route, carrying around 80% of traffic between London and Paris, according to Calder. And he said passengers booking close to their departure date can routinely face fares of more than £200 one way. Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT You May Like Calder said: "It is absolutely scandalous the amount of money you need to spend, particularly on a short-notice booking, typically over £200 one way." He added that airlines can offer flights for less than half the price in some cases. "It's ridiculous, and I can't wait until we've got hopefully three different operators between London and Paris, Eurostar, of course, plus Trenitalia and then Virgin Trains." Virgin has now received approval from the Office of Rail and Road to use the crucial Temple Mills International depot in east London. The regulator said the decision unlocks around £700 million of investment and will allow Virgin to progress its plans for international services. Virgin is planning to order 12 new Alstom trains and hopes to begin services in 2030. Virgin's proposed network would initially include 13 daily return services between London and Paris, four to Brussels and three to Amsterdam once its full timetable is introduced. But the latest development involving Trenitalia could be even more significant. The Italian company's French operation, Trenitalia France, has been expanding its high-speed network in France and has plans for a London service through the Channel Tunnel. The company is expected to expand its fleet to at least 19 trains, while its wider investment programme includes the purchase of new Frecciarossa trains. A new maintenance centre is also being developed in France. Crucially, Trenitalia would not necessarily need to rely on the Temple Mills depot in Britain. As Dickinson explained on the podcast, the company plans to use a depot on the French side of the Channel for servicing its trains. That could sidestep one of the biggest obstacles facing would-be Eurostar competitors - the shortage of suitable maintenance facilities in Britain. The issue is important because Temple Mills has long been regarded as the key piece of infrastructure for international trains operating from London. The Office of Rail and Road has said there is capacity for additional trains at the depot, but its decision last year approved access for Virgin while rejecting applications from Trenitalia, Evolyn and Gemini. Trenitalia's approach therefore opens up the possibility of another operator entering the market without taking up space at Temple Mills. And Calder believes the prospect of three operators fighting for passengers could transform the London-Paris market. He compared it with Spain, where several operators compete on high-speed routes. He said: "It just means that people are getting fantastic service and great fares. Competition through the Channel Tunnel absolutely cannot arrive early enough for me." The potential shake-up comes after more than 30 years in which Eurostar has effectively had the Channel Tunnel passenger market to itself. Eurostar services began in 1994 and it has remained the sole international passenger train operator using the tunnel. There are already ways for passengers to cut the cost of a Eurostar journey. Dickinson highlighted Eurostar Snap, which offers discounted tickets to passengers prepared to give up some flexibility. Travellers booking within 14 days can choose whether they want to travel in the morning or afternoon, but Eurostar chooses the precise train and passengers cannot select their seats. The service is not available to children under 14, but savings of around 50% can be possible. For passengers who need to travel at a specific time, the Eurostar Lowest Fare Finder remains another option. But Calder warned that the headline lead-in fares of £39 one way or £78 return can be difficult to find unless travellers book well ahead. That leaves airlines with a powerful advantage on price for last-minute journeys. The hope is that Virgin and Trenitalia will finally force Eurostar to respond - giving travellers what they have been missing for decades: a genuine choice of trains, timetables and fares across the Channel.
Eurostar brings digital signalling to e300 trains. * Last updated: 13th August, 2026 at 4:25 pm Eurostar has announced that its first e300 train has taken its first commercial journey using ERTMS/ETCS digital signalling. The authorisation came from the European Union Agency for Railways on the 6th July 2026, with the first journey taking place on the 17th July 2026. Eurostar says that it will extend the service life of trains and imrpove interoperability as demand for international rail travel continues to grow. With the milestone reached, the programme enters its final phase before introduction to the modernised e300 fleet. Industrial work is being carried out at SNCB workshops in Namur, where the first modifications are already under way, marking the project's transition into large-scale deployment. "Securing this authorisation reflects our ongoing commitment to safety, European interoperability and the performance of our fleet. By equipping 100% of its fleet with ERTMS signalling, Eurostar is fulfilling its pioneering role as a backbone of European rail. We would like to thank all of our partners for their contribution to this complex and strategically important project." Zelda Crambert, Director of Rolling Stock at Eurostar
NEWS & OFFERS: A lucrative clubcard-virgin points offer, Trenitalia london-paris updates & a Hilton opens at Istanbul Airport. In this post: 30% bonus Virgin Points when you convert Tesco Clubcard vouchers. Clubcard members who manually exchange Clubcard vouchers into Virgin Points from now until 23rd September 2026 will receive a 30% Virgin Points bonus on each qualifying manual exchange. Automatic exchanges do not qualify for the 30% bonus, so if you currently have auto-exchange switched on, you'll need to make a manual exchange instead to benefit from the offer. Tesco Vouchers already double in value when you exchange them for Virgin Points. For example, £20 in Clubcard vouchers would normally convert to 4,000 Virgin Points. With the 30% bonus, you would receive 5,200 Virgin Points in total - an extra 1,200 Virgin Points simply for making the most of the offer. To put that into context, one-way Upper Class Saver fares to New York start from 29,000 points + £720 in taxes and fees. £112 of Clubcard vouchers during the promotion would convert to 29,120 Virgin Points, enough to cover the points needed for an Upper redemption. Including the £112 face value of the vouchers and £720 cash element, the redemption would cost you just £832. That's a substantial saving for a flight, which would be around £2,450 if you paid in cash, saving around £1,618. Virgin Points can also be used for hotels and experiences via Virgin Red as well as cabin upgrades and partner reward flights with airlines such as KLM, Air France and Delta. You must have at least £1.50 in Clubcard vouchers to exchange. Log in to your Tesco Clubcard account, select the value of vouchers you would like to exchange and enter your Virgin Red ID. Your Virgin Points will be added within 24 hours. Trenitalia moves closer to launching london-paris trains. Trenitalia has 19 high-speed trains on order as it pushes ahead with plans to compete with Eurostar between London and Paris, targeting a 2029 launch. The trains are part of an investment programme worth around €2 billion and will support expansion in France and internationally. The trains will be based on Hitachi Rail's Frecciarossa 1000, an international high-speed train which already operates on Trenitalia's Paris-Milan route and many routes across Italy. The new generation will have redesigned interiors, an updated bistro and catering concept, and improved onboard WIFI. There are still hurdles to overcome. Trenitalia was unsuccessful in obtaining access to the Temple Mills depot in London, with the ORR instead approving Virgin Trains, which is targeting its own cross-Channel services from 2030. Trenitalia is now building a new maintenance hub near Paris, although further approvals will still be needed before London services can begin. Eurostar is expanding too, with 30 new double-deck trains on order and ambitions to increase capacity and add more European destinations Competition between train operators would be welcome, hopefully bringing better fares, more choice and improved service, while making travelling by train much more tempting. Turning Left for Less has been eagerly anticipating the launch of this route since plans were first announced in 2025 and Turning Left for Less is excited to see how this progresses. New Hilton Istanbul Airport - ideal for connections. Istanbul Airport now has a brand new Hilton Hotel, just a 6-minute walk from Istanbul Airport - ideal for connections! For longer connections, the metro station is opposite the hotel for easy access to Istanbul city centre for a quick trip into the city. The hotel has 485 spacious rooms and suites, and some even have runway views. There's a large variety of rooms to choose from, including Suites with a terrace, Executive Rooms, two-bedroom family rooms, accessible rooms and more. Eligible Hilton status holders are well catered for too, with an Executive Lounge overlooking the runway and gates. The interiors have plenty of contemporary local touches, inspired by the colours, textures and atmosphere of Istanbul. The design is based on the historic neighbourhoods and skyline, as well as the changing colours of the Marmara Sea. The hotel marks Türkiye's debut of Hilton's global dining brand OXBO, with a restaurant, café and 24-hour bar serving dishes made with locally sourced ingredients. The 24-hour bar is a particularly useful touch at an airport where passengers are arriving and departing at all hours. There's plenty here if you have a longer stopover. Facilities include an indoor pool, sauna, Turkish bath and spa with three treatment rooms. There's also a 24/7 fitness centre, while business and event facilities include eight meeting rooms and a grand ballroom seating up to 250. When Turning Left for Less checked, rates started from around £168 or 80,000 Hilton Honors Points per night. The hotel is Hilton's 100th hotel in Türkiye and Türkiye's first Hilton airport hotel. It's one of 14 openings in Türkiye for this year, including the Hilton Istanbul Bosphorus and Hilton's first cave hotel in Cappadocia. At Istanbul Airport, you also have the option of Yotel, but this new Hilton is a fantastic full-service option. The biggest selling point is the location. Airport hotels requiring a shuttle to the terminal can be a pain, particularly after a long-haul flight. It's certainly a very useful addition to Istanbul Airport. Loading...
FS Group agrees purchase of 19 high-speed trains as London-Paris plan develops. FS Group has agreed to purchase 19 high-speed trains to support the launch of its London to Paris service. The €2 billion deal with Hitachi Rail will enable Trenitalia France, a subsidiary of FS Italiane Group, to move forward with its plans to compete with Eurostar along the Channel Tunnel from 2029. In addition to the supply of the trains, the agreement also covers the construction of a maintenance facility at Maisons-Alfort Pompadour near Paris. Gianpiero Strisciuglio, chief executive and general manager of FS Italiane Group, described the new trains and the maintenance hub as "fundamental elements" of the proposed London to Paris service. He added: "This order represents a strategic milestone for FS Group: it strengthens our presence in France, a key market for our international growth, and supports the development of increasingly efficient, sustainable and competitive high-speed services." Trenitalia France said it would be strengthening its presence on the Paris-Lyon, Paris-Milan and Paris-Marseille routes, noting it would improve service quality and increase frequencies. The Hitachi investment follows the strategic partnership formed between FS Group and US private equity firm Certares. Certares founder and senior managing director Greg O'Hara said: "The potential of this partnership is exceeding our expectations. "We have seen extraordinary interest from investors of all types who want exposure to the European high-speed rail market and are excited to participate alongside us in the sector's development. "It is a powerful validation of the investment opportunity ahead of us: combining FS Group's operational excellence with our global travel distribution assets to build a world-class international high-speed rail platform." Hitachi Rail's group chief executive officer Giuseppe Marino said: "With this project, we are strengthening Hitachi Rail's role as a technology partner for the new generation of high-speed rail services in Europe. "The trainsets will be designed to deliver high standards of sustainability, operational efficiency and cross-border interoperability, which are increasingly essential to support the growth of international rail traffic. "The expansion of Trenitalia France's services represents a further step towards a more integrated and sustainable European mobility system." Certares owns Internova Travel Group, parent of Barrhead Travel.
