(Photo: Cédric Trempe) Two Quebec startups are leaving Montreal's Startupfest with deep pockets. Following a pitch competition, Tissue Tinker Bio won the $100,000 2SLGBTQIA+ prize, while startup EN Solutions Hydro secured the same amount for the Black Community Entrepreneur prize, awarded to its founder and president, Emmanuel Ngue. Born at McGill University, Tissue Tinker fights cancer with a modeling platform that uses 3D printing to create tumor models living outside the body. The use of special inks and human cells to mimic cancer allows researchers to obtain more reliable and realistic data before moving to clinical trials. For its part, EN Solutions Hydro has developed artificial intelligence (AI)-powered software to help hydroelectric plants better manage their equipment. This notably helps prevent breakdowns and optimize energy production. Three prizes for ElleLogic. Meanwhile, Danneelle Crisp, founder and president of ElleLogic, walks away with three prizes totaling $60,000. One $10,000 prize highlights the expansion of a startup from the Black community that has generated or raised over $250,000; the $25,000 Fonds de solidarité FTQ Impact Grant; and an investment prize of the same amount provided by Mistral Ventures. ElleLogic has built an AI that provides instant analysis to nurses and emergency doctors. This tool helps reduce wait times and workloads while improving patient care. Finally, Montreal-based startup OWI Labs secured the $10,000 Productivity Grant from the Fonds de solidarité FTQ. This company developed a technology that maps and analyzes how work is actually performed by employees within an organization. The most prestigious prize at Startupfest, the Best of the Fest worth $100,000, was awarded to a Moncton startup, AgroGene Solutions. It created a solution that monitors the health of honeybees in hives. Its method notably helps detect infections that can wipe out a colony more quickly.

Fonds de solidarité FTQ breaks ground on mass timber rental building in Québec.

Fonds de solidarité FTQ breaks ground on mass timber rental building in Québec. Posted on April 26, 2026 Original Source: Fonds de solidarité FTQ announced it has broken ground on a 12-story mass timber rental residential building in Terrebonne, Québec. Led by the Fonds immobilier de solidarité FTQ and supported financially by the Government of Québec through its Wood Construction Innovation Program under the 2030 Plan for a Green Economy, the project will deliver 164 rental units. The first units are expected to be completed in spring 2028. The development will be the first in North America to use Québec-developed Upbrella technology, a covered construction system designed to improve site safety and protect materials from weather exposure. Project partners include Provencher_Roy, Genimac, Elema, JCB Construction Canada, Développement immobilier CT, Dyotte Déom Paysage, and MJM Conseillers en acoustique, with technical support from Cecobois. Built using mass timber, the project is targeting Zero Carbon Building certification from the Canada Green Building Council. The design focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving energy performance, and incorporating material reuse. Timber will be supplied by Nordic Structures' Chantiers Chibougamau manufacturing facility. In remarks accompanying the announcement, Fonds de solidarité FTQ President and CEO Janie C. Béïque said (translated): "As sole investor, the Fonds de solidarité FTQ is advancing a model that can be applied across projects. We are accelerating the delivery of new homes to help address the current shortage, while showing that mass timber offers a more sustainable and responsible way to build - and that repeating the model can reduce timelines and costs. This project reflects the Fonds de solidarité FTQ's commitment to building a more sustainable and resilient Québec that can adapt to environmental and socio-economic change."
