Footprint and Qwarzo to scale PE-free, mineral-coated cup solution. 31 Jul 2026 Key takeaways. * Footprint International and Qwarzo are developing PE-free paper cups, lids, and straws using Qwarzo's mineral-based barrier coating. * The plastic-free, PFAS-free technology is designed to provide resistance to water, oil, heat, oxygen, and vapor while supporting recyclability and compostability. * The partners plan to commercialize and scale mineral-coated packaging initially in Europe, although no launch timeline has been disclosed. Footprint International and Qwarzo have reached a strategic agreement to continue the development of a PE-free paper cup, lids, and straws using the Qwarzo Technology Barrier. The partnership aims to combine the global manufacturing and customer platform of Footprint International, a US-based materials science company focused on reducing reliance on single-use plastics, with Qwarzao's mineral-based coating technology. The companies spot a "growing" demand from brands, foodservice operators, and consumers for "practical alternatives" to plastic-lined paper cups. "Footprint is committed to bringing scalable, practical, and high-performance alternatives to single-use plastics into the market," says Corey Berends, CEO of Footprint. "Qwarzo's mineral-based coating technology strengthens our ability to offer customers PE-free solutions that support recycling and composting pathways without compromising functionality." Alessio Facondo, CEO of the Italy-based Qwarzo, adds: "This agreement represents a step in accelerating the adoption of Qwarzo technology globally and in demonstrating how our proprietary mineral-based coatings can contribute to the next generation of circular paper packaging." Luca Panzeri, the inventor of Qwarzo, comments: "I am excited about this agreement with an innovative global leader like Footprint, which shares my life goal of building a more sustainable, plastic-free world." Mineral-based coating. Qwarzo highlights that its coatings are plastic-free and without intentionally added microplastics or PFAS, and are engineered to enhance paper and other substrates without compromising their circularity. Qwarzo Technology Barrier can help customers meet regulatory requirements and sustainability goals while maintaining performance, according to Qwarzo and Footprint. Last year, Panzeri told Packaging Insights that the company's mineral-based coatings will become the new standard for F&B, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical packaging. He also highlighted that Qwarzo can enable paper to gain resistance to water, oil, temperature, oxygen, and vapor without altering its recyclability or compostability. Last year, Starbucks introduced paper cups featuring Qwarzo coating in the European market. The collaboration included Mestä Board and Transcend Packaging, and the packaging solution was rolled out in Italy, Germany, France, Hungary, Sweden, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, and Portugal. Footprint and Qwarzo indicate that they intend to work together to support the commercialization and industrial scale-up of mineral-coated applications across key markets, beginning in Europe and with the potential to expand further.
Welsh-developed PE-free cup technology targets global scale through Footprint and Transcend partnership. Proven mineral-coated cup technology developed and commercialised by Transcend Packaging in Wales is set for significant international expansion following a new partnership with global materials science company Footprint, targeting manufacturing capacity running into billions of units annually by the end of 2027. A sustainable cup technology already proven through large-scale commercial use is preparing for its next phase of global growth following a strategic agreement between Footprint and Welsh manufacturer Transcend Packaging. Footprint has acquired the intellectual property behind Transcend's Rubicon PE-free cup platform, alongside next-generation paper lid and straw technologies, with the two businesses now working together to expand manufacturing capacity and accelerate adoption across the UK, Europe and North America. Unlike many announcements in sustainable packaging, the technology is not at concept, pilot or R&D stage. Millions of the mineral-coated cups have already been manufactured and deployed commercially, including at scale with a leading global coffee brand. The platform has been developed to replace the conventional polyethylene plastic lining used in many paper cups with a mineral-based barrier, creating a cup designed to be recyclable and home compostable while maintaining the performance required for everyday hot and cold beverage applications. The next challenge is scale. Under the partnership, Transcend will continue to manufacture the product from its facility in South Wales, supporting customers and providing continuity of supply, while Footprint expands the technology through its wider international manufacturing network. Production is expected to expand through Footprint's facility in Poland, followed by North America, with the combined manufacturing platform targeting the capability to produce billions of units annually by the end of 2027. For Transcend, the partnership represents an opportunity to take technology developed and industrialised in Wales and significantly accelerate its international reach. Joe Reed of Transcend Packaging said: "Over the past several years its team has focused on proving that an alternative to the traditional plastic-lined paper cup can work not just in a laboratory, but in the real world. "Transcend Packaging Ltd has manufactured millions of cups, worked through the operational challenges of producing them at industrial scale and demonstrated the technology with some of the world's most demanding foodservice customers. "The opportunity now is to take that proven platform and build genuine global scale. "Working with Footprint gives Transcend Packaging Ltd the manufacturing reach, capability and shared ambition to accelerate that journey. Transcend will continue to manufacture from Wales, supporting its customers and working closely with the Footprint team as capacity expands across Europe and North America. "It is an exciting next chapter for the technology and for the team that has worked incredibly hard to bring it to this point." A spokesperson for Nomura, which supported Transcend in opening and developing the strategic dialogue with Footprint, said: "Transcend Packaging Ltd is delighted to have supported Transcend in establishing the relationship with Footprint and helping bring the two organisations together around a shared strategic opportunity. "From the outset, there was a strong industrial and commercial rationale for combining Transcends proven PE-free cup technology and manufacturing expertise with Footprint's global platform, customer reach and ambition to scale sustainable materials solutions internationally. "This partnership demonstrates what can be achieved when proven innovation is matched with the right strategic partner and access to global scale. We are proud to have played a role in helping initiate that journey and look forward to seeing the partnership develop." Regulation accelerating market change. The partnership comes at a significant point for the global foodservice packaging industry. For many years, moving away from plastic-lined paper cups has largely been driven by voluntary sustainability commitments from major consumer brands. That environment is changing. New packaging regulation, extended producer responsibility schemes and increasingly demanding recyclability requirements are shifting sustainable packaging from a corporate ambition towards a commercial and regulatory requirement. In Europe, the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, alongside existing Single-Use Plastics legislation, is increasing pressure on businesses to reduce unnecessary plastic, improve packaging recyclability and take greater responsibility for what happens to packaging after use. Similar momentum is developing through Extended Producer Responsibility legislation at state level in the United States. The significance for cup manufacturers and major foodservice brands is that technologies capable of reducing reliance on conventional plastic barriers increasingly need to be available at genuine commercial scale. That is where the Footprint and Transcend partnership aims to differentiate itself. Rather than announcing a technology that still needs to be proven, the businesses are taking a product that has already undergone commercial manufacturing and customer deployment and building the capacity required for much wider adoption. Welsh innovation with global ambitions. Transcend will remain an important part of the manufacturing model. The company will continue producing and selling the cup from its facility in Wales, serving its existing markets and supporting Footprint customers as additional international capacity comes online. The structure also provides continuity between the technology originally developed and commercialised by Transcend and the product that will ultimately be manufactured across multiple global locations. Footprint has acquired the intellectual property and Transcend has licensed it back. Transcend continues to manufacture and sell the cup from its facility in Wales. The arrangement ensures product consistency across all facilities. The companies have not disclosed the value of the IP transaction or the commercial terms of the licensing arrangement. For Transcend, however, the wider strategic objective is clear: combine proven technology and manufacturing expertise developed in Wales with Footprint's international manufacturing platform and customer reach. The result could move mineral-coated PE-free cups from being an alternative packaging technology into a product capable of competing at the scale required by major international foodservice brands. Reed added: "Transcend Packaging Ltd believe the next phase of sustainable packaging will be defined by execution and scale. "Customers increasingly know the direction regulation and consumer expectations are moving. What they need are solutions that are proven, commercially viable and capable of being supplied reliably in very significant volumes. "That is what makes this partnership so exciting. We have the proof, we have a clear route to scale, and the market timing is increasingly compelling." The partnership will now focus on expanding manufacturing capacity, supporting existing customers and accelerating commercial adoption across Europe and North America as Footprint and Transcend work towards the next phase of global production.
Footprint acquires Transcend Packaging's compostable cup platform. The acquisition expands Footprint's offering in the global cup market with an established alternative to plastic-lined cups. Material technology company Footprint has purchased a recyclable, home-compostable, polyethylene (PE)-free hot and cold cup platform from Transcend Packaging. The deal also includes next-generation paper lid and straw solutions. The acquisition expands Footprint's offering in the global cup market with an established alternative to plastic-lined cups. The company said it will scale the PE-free solution through its facility in Poland as it expands across Europe, with North America set to follow. During the ramp-up in Poland, Footprint will partner with Transcend to maintain customer supply across Europe. Transcend will manufacture products for Footprint customers from its Wales facility, while continuing to serve customers in the UK and Ireland. Traditional paper cups use polyethylene plastic linings to hold hot and cold drinks, which can limit recyclability in many existing systems. Footprint said its cup and lid replace that lining with a mineral-based coating designed to support recycling or home-composting without compromising performance. The company added that the PE-free cup has been independently tested for recyclability, compostability, and material composition. As part of the move, Transcend co-founders Lorenzo Angelucci and Gabriel Fysh are joining Footprint's European leadership team. Angelucci will serve as president for Europe, leading the company's regional business. Fysh will become business development managing director for Europe, focused on customer adoption and commercial growth. Angelucci noted: "Transcend developed a strong solution, and Footprint has the manufacturing platform, customer reach, and mission-driven focus to take it further." Footprint CEO Corey Berends said: "This PE-free cup platform gives Footprint a proven technology we can scale globally at a time when customers need solutions that support emerging regulatory requirements and sustainability goals." Footprint said it plans to bring the technology to more customers and markets as demand grows for packaging that works within existing recycling systems. In October 2024, Transcend entered a multi-year commercial supply agreement with 2M Group of Companies to implement Xampla's plastic-free Morro coating in the UK. Footprint is expanding into the global cup market with the addition of a recyclable, home-compostable, polyethylene (PE)-free hot and cold cup platform from Transcend Packaging, along with next-generation paper lid and straw solutions. The move brings one of the industry's most promising PE-free cup platforms into Footprint's portfolio, expanding access to high-performance fiber-based solutions and strengthening the company's ability to scale practical alternatives to plastic-lined paper cups, beginning in Europe with North America to follow. Why Cups Matter The plastic crisis remains one of the defining challenges of its time, and foodservice packaging is a major part of that problem. Cups are used every day, everywhere, and too many still depend on plastic to perform. Footprint's cup and lid solution replaces traditional polyethylene plastic linings with a mineral-based coating designed to support recycling or home composting without compromising performance. The PE-free cup has already received strong industry recognition, including a Gold Award from the 2025 Environmental Packaging Awards in Europe and multiple honors for innovation and environmental performance. It has also been independently tested against standards for recyclability, compostability, and material composition. As Corey Berends, Footprint CEO, shared: "Cups are used every day, everywhere, and too many still depend on plastic to perform," said Corey Berends, Chief Executive Officer of Footprint. "This PE-free cup platform gives Footprint a proven technology we can scale globally at a time when customers need solutions that support emerging regulatory requirements and sustainability goals. This acquisition clearly demonstrates our commitment to creating a healthier planet and healthier people." Built for Scale Footprint will begin scaling the solution through its Poland facility as the company expands across Europe. As operations ramp in Poland, Footprint will work with Transcend through a manufacturing partnership to support customer continuity and meet growing demand across Europe. Transcend will manufacture product from its Wales facility for Footprint customers while continuing to serve customers in the UK and Ireland. This approach supports reliable supply as Footprint brings additional capacity online and expands access to practical, high-performing alternatives to single-use plastic. Moving the Mission Forward This is how Footprint's mission becomes real: taking technology and innovation that can help solve one of packaging's biggest challenges and putting it to work for customers, communities, and the planet. Looking ahead, Footprint is focused on bringing this solution to more customers, more markets, and more everyday moments where better packaging can make a difference. It is another step toward a future where practical alternatives to single-use plastic are not the exception, but the standard. Read the full news release here.
