Fortera

Fortera

Decarbonizes cement via CO2 mineralization

Overview

Fortera develops materials technology to decarbonize cement by capturing CO2 from existing cement plants and turning it into stable carbonate with its ReCarb process. The result is a cementitious material with a lower carbon footprint. Fortera operates a production facility in Redding, California, and also partners with established cement producers worldwide to integrate ReCarb into their plants, enabling faster adoption across the cement and construction value chain. The company relies on a large patent portfolio (over 100 patents) and significant venture funding to scale its technology and expand globally. Its goal is to reduce emissions in cement production by providing low- and zero-carbon cement through in-plant capture and mineralization, and to broaden access to sustainable building materials.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Microsoft’s September 2025 investment secured procurement rights for ReAct® cement.
  • Albert Luu joined as CFO on 2026-06-09, strengthening capital-raising.
  • Fortera’s Redding plant and 300,000-ton project prove manufacturing traction now.

What critics are saying

  • 400,000-ton commercial plant still needs execution; delays stall Microsoft-backed scale-up.
  • Cement incumbents like Holcim and Heidelberg Materials already sell low-carbon alternatives.
  • If ReCarb® economics miss parity, Fortera becomes a niche demonstration supplier.

What makes Fortera unique

  • ReCarb® mineralizes cement-plant CO2 into product, not just avoided emissions.
  • ReAct® met all six ASTM C1157 categories in December 2025.
  • Fortera’s bolt-on approach works with existing kilns, easing plant adoption.
