Gevo produces sustainable aviation fuel, isobutanol, and renewable gasoline by converting renewable feedstocks like corn into hydrocarbons. Using its proprietary fermentation technology, the company transforms these feedstocks into isobutanol, which is then processed into "drop-in" fuels compatible with existing engines and infrastructure. Gevo distinguishes itself by managing the entire value chain from farm to fuel and by licensing its specific chemical processes to third parties. The company's goal is to provide cost-competitive alternatives to petroleum that significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the global transportation sector.

Jet fuel manufacturer announces departure from South Dakota. Aug. 17, 2026 A Colorado-based company that at one point had announced a $2.6 billion ethanol-based jet fuel plant in South Dakota has pulled away from the state. In its most recent earnings report, Gevo confirmed it is exiting the project in South Dakota, known as ATJ-60. It held a ceremonial groundbreaking in the fall of 2022. The proposed facility was one of several biorefineries that would have been connected to a proposed carbon capture and sequestration pipeline from Summit Carbon Solutions, which ended up facing legal and regulatory challenges. Gevo instead is investing its capital into North Dakota facilities. "Our carbon business strategy is working, and Gevo North Dakota is a strategic asset for profitable growth," CEO Paul Bloom said in a statement. "Exiting our ATJ-60 project in South Dakota and other non-core projects and recognizing a one-time, non-cash impairment reflects our disciplined approach to prioritize the most attractive near-term growth while enabling long-term value creation." Gevo had planned to build on 245 acres near Lake Preston. The recent quarterly earnings report included a one-time non-cash impairment charge of $176 million related to capitalized development costs and reflecting the decision to exit all activities related to low-carbon ethanol and sustainable aviation fuel production in Lake Preston to focus on capital projects at Gevo North Dakota, just outside Richardton in the western part of the state. "Our Gevo North Dakota complex is better suited to support a strategic platform growth than the Lake Preston, South Dakota, site we were previously developing," Bloom said on an earnings call. "Gevo North Dakota combines one of the strongest active on-site carbon capture and sequestration capabilities in the world, with access to advantaged local feedstocks, established rail and truck logistics, an experienced operating workforce, available land and pore space capacity for future growth, and it's in a business-friendly state that supports agriculture, energy and carbon management." The move resulted in a second quarter net loss of $77 million, or 75 cents per share, though gross profit for the first half of the year ending June 30 was $36 million, compared with $21 million in the same period last year. "Gevo delivered strong second quarter operational results and unlocked significant carbon business revenue that is expected to begin in the third quarter," Bloom added. The company improved its full year 2026 outlook to anticipate earnings exceeding $60 million, more than double the previous target. "Gevo has a powerful growth platform centered on commodities, carbon and incentives," Bloom said. "We have focused development around our existing operations, improving margins and near-term cash flow, with a portfolio of growth projects that we believe will create substantial shareholder value."
Gevo reported second quarter results that beat analyst expectations, with revenue of $46.5 million versus estimates of $44.62 million. The company posted adjusted EBITDA of $11.08 million, a 22.4% beat, driven by its low-carbon ethanol and renewable natural gas businesses. CEO Paul Bloom said the carbon strategy is working well and the company is positioning for three stages of expansion. However, operating margin declined to -369% from 13.4% in the prior year period. During the earnings call, analysts questioned the sustainability of the $60 million EBITDA target and inquired about financing options for the ATJ-30 project. CFO Agiri explained Gevo is pursuing non-dilutive, project-based financing with multiple lenders beyond Ara Energy. Analysts also asked about capital expenditures for North Dakota ethanol expansion and carbon credit marketing partnerships.
An energy plant expansion could boost production in North Dakota. (Richardton, ND) - A major energy expansion in Richardton could soon provide a boost to North Dakota's agricultural economy. The project has the potential to lift a financial burden currently weighing on local producers and farmers while providing more nutrition to area livestock. Gevo North Dakota bought the former Red Trail Energy plant in Richardton last year. Now, the company plans to add a second production facility at the site, bringing its total capacity to roughly 150 million gallons of ethanol per year. The plant currently produces 67 million gallons of the fuel. Gevo also plans to introduce "Project Northstar" during Phase 3 of its plan to begin production of sustainable jet fuel.
Gevo raised its 2026 adjusted EBITDA outlook to over $60 million, more than double its prior $30 million forecast, driven by Canadian clean-fuel credits, over $70 million in expected 45Z tax-credit monetisation, fuel sales, and cost controls. Second-quarter revenue rose 7% year over year to $47 million. The company reported an adjusted net loss of $1 million, whilst a $176 million non-cash impairment related to its South Dakota ATJ-60 exit resulted in a GAAP net loss of $177 million. Gevo's North Dakota expansion remains on track, with debottlenecking expected to increase ethanol capacity to 75 million gallons annually by year-end 2026. The company is also pursuing financing for a larger 150-million-gallon expansion and targeting a year-end investment decision for its $600 million ATJ-30 sustainable aviation fuel project.
