Mafia lead says the franchise isn't comparable to GTA; denies competition with series. Mafia and GTA Aren't Direct Competitors! Story Highlight * The Hangar 13 president has pushed back on Grand Theft Auto and Mafia comparisons, calling them "an internet thing." * He believes that Mafia and GTA are not direct competitors despite being third-person shooter IPs. * The president also states that the team doesn't internally look at GTA to steer its strategy or development. Both Mafia and GTA have previously been compared for being similar crime-driven third-person-shooter games. In fact, when Mafia: The Old Country was announced for a 2025 release, many thought the game would be overshadowed by GTA 6's 2026 launch. Although GTA 6 was later delayed, comparisons between the two IPs live on. This is where the Hangar 13 president disagrees with fans, stating that these comparisons don't make all that much sense. Why it matters: GTA doesn't have any real competition in the modern era, so fans have turned to 2K and Hangar 13's Mafia series as a potential competitor to Rockstar Games' behemoth open-world series. Hangar 13 president Nick Baynes has rejected the idea that the series is directly comparable to GTA in a new interview. He notes that the link between these two IPs is something fans have come up with. As of the latest releases, Hangar 13 and 2K continue highlighting Mafia as a more focused, cinematic crime series rather than a direct rival to Rockstar's open-world behemoth of a franchise. This is also evident when looking at Mafia: The Old Country, which focused on Sicily and organized crime in an older era. Interestingly enough, the Hangar 13 president even refrained from naming GTA 6. He states that the game did not steer Mafia's development at all and likely won't do so in the future either. It genuinely never ever comes up in conversation as a touchpoint or steering its strategy or anything like that. It's not something the studio looks at. Mafia: Definitive Edition is out August 14 for Xbox Series X/S and PS5, Omertà Collection revealed. The collection includes Definitive Editions of all four Mafia titles, including The Old Country and its upcoming Man of Honor expansion. Posted By Ravi Sinha | On 13th, Aug. 2026 Hangar 13 and 2K have officially announced Mafia: The Omertà Collection, which packs all four titles into one bundle. It's out on August 14th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC, and in keeping with a recent ESRB rating, Mafia: Definitive Edition will receive a current-gen console update. As a free upgrade for PS4 and Xbox One owners, it adds 60 FPS support for Xbox Series X/S and PS5 players alongside other "technical improvements." Sadly, it appears that Mafia 2: Definitive Edition and Mafia 3: Definitive Edition won't be getting any changes or new features. On the bright side, those who haven't gotten into the series, including last year's Mafia: The Old Country, may want to check out the bundle. It features a Definitive Edition of the former that includes the base game, Deluxe content and the upcoming Man of Honor expansion. As far as experiencing the entire story of the Mafia series, loosely connected as it is, this is pretty good value. Of course, 2K has yet to announce pricing, so Gamingbolt'll need to wait until it's out tomorrow. As for Man of Honor, it introduces two new story chapters where Enzo works with Don Ennio Salieri, new Free Ride missions, challenging new mission types and even fresh rewards. Head here for all the details - it's also out tomorrow at 10 AM PT on all platforms. Follow Gamingbolt:

However, this is set to change soon, as developer Hangar 13 has announced the upcoming addition of a mode called "Free Ride," which will allow for a more open exploration experience.
If you're among those who feel underwhelmed by "The Old Country," there's news that Hangar 13 is already working on a new Mafia project, which may feature a larger budget or align more closely with player expectations.
