KPN launches 5G fixed wireless access in the Netherlands.

KPN launches 5G fixed wireless access in the Netherlands. July 26, 2026 Dutch operator KPN is deploying new 5G home internet services to deliver plug-and-play connectivity to addresses lacking fixed broadband Dutch telecommunications provider KPN has launched 5G-Internet Thuis, a new 5G Internet at Home service to provide fast wireless connectivity to consumers in areas lacking good wired connections. The consumer premises equipment (CPE) KPN is providing as part of this service uses KPN's 5G network, supports Wi-Fi 7, has an integrated SIM card and offers plug-and-play installation. The latter is done through the MijnKPN app, allowing customers to quickly configure and monitor their connections. KPN's 5G-Internet Thuis service offers unlimited data for regular use, with download speeds that can reach up to 1000Mbit/s depending on the location and network load. High-speed wireless connectivity. This high-speed alternative is particularly suited for household activities such as streaming, working from home and online entertainment. Robin Clements, Commercial Director Consumer Market at KPN, says: "Telco Magazine see that many customers need internet that is not only fast, but above all easy to install and works immediately. "With 5G-Internet Thuis, you are online within seconds. "Moreover, it is flexible: you can easily take it with you to, for example, a holiday address or temporary accommodation." Phased deployment approach. KPN is rolling out the service in phases and initially focusing on addresses where fixed-line internet is unavailable or underperforming. If fibre optic connectivity is available at a specific address, the operator will supply a fibre connection instead. For the time being, the 5G-Internet Thuis package is offered purely as a broadband solution without extra services like television or fixed telephony. However, subscribers can opt to order various streaming services alongside their home connection. "We are building out this solution step by step and are specifically looking at usage and customer needs before scaling up further," says Robin. Subscribers combining the new 5G service with a KPN mobile subscription can access the KPN Combivoordeel service, which includes monthly streaming incentives such as Netflix or Videoland. Secure browsing as standard. Security is integrated directly into the 5G-Internet Thuis package, offering Internet safety features for up to five devices as standard. The package's installation and support are performed via the MijnKPN app. Back in March 2026, network analytics company Umlaut named KPN the best mobile network in the Netherlands for the fifth time in a row. FWA seems to be one of the most commercially successful 5G applications. An Opensignal study, published back in June 2024, stated that 5G FWA had soaked up all broadband subscriber growth in the US market since mid-2022 while achieving more than 600-700 thousand net adds per quarter. KPN partners with McKinsey to reinvent customer service through agentic AI.

KPN partners with McKinsey to reinvent customer service through agentic AI. 22 July 2026 Consultancy.eu KPN is transforming its customer service operations with digital agents that work seamlessly alongside human employees. The AI-powered approach enables the largest telecommunications provider in the Netherlands to operate more efficiently while delivering a faster experience for customers. The transformation from a 'traditional' contact center to an AI-powered one was delivered in partnership with McKinsey & Company and its AI arm, QuantumBlack. According to KPN, the new operating model, which sees a network of specialized agents take over AI-friendly tasks under the supervision of humans, has resulted in better quality and efficiency, with an 86% adoption success rate among the employee base. Reimagining customer interactions. KPN has long been an early adopter of emerging technologies, making it a natural step for the telecom and ICT provider to embrace the rise of agentic AI to improve how it handles the roughly five million customer calls it receives each year. Working alongside McKinsey & Company, the project team began by analyzing large volumes of chat logs and call transcripts to identify the most common reasons customers get in touch. These interactions were then clustered into recurring customer needs, creating a structured foundation for AI-driven service delivery. The analysis extended well beyond traditional text-based automation, incorporating dynamic voice-to-voice conversations to better capture the complexity and context of real customer interactions. The goal of this analysis was to find the best way to simplify processes. KPN made sure to keep humans in the loop at key moments, like when customers move to a new home. This resulted in a clear set of focus areas for the AI agents, including customer verification, order status inquiries, technician appointment management, and internet troubleshooting. "We wanted to make this next step toward the future. We see AI as a way to support more natural interaction with customers, while ensuring that human support remains available when it matters most," said Jörg Kramer, KPN's chief of customer and commercial operations. Elevating operations with agentic AI. To support AI-driven voice conversations at scale, the project team built a centralized platform that connects directly to core telecommunications systems. One of the main requirements for the team was keeping response times below two seconds per turn. Because typical human conversations have gaps of under one second, minimizing latency was critical to ensure the interactions did not feel artificial. The platform also supports a feature that allows customers to interrupt mid-sentence while the system maintains context. In tying these elements together, KPN chose an integrated platform over isolated tools, making the technology reusable for future use cases across the company. Operating at a large scale requires strict quality control. The project team introduced guardrails to ensure the digital agents stay within defined boundaries, alongside automated checks and human-led testing. Every morning, the team reviews transcripts from up to 100 real customer calls to find edge cases, updates the prompts in the afternoon, and releases the upgrades by the evening. Preparing the workforce for this shift was just as critical as developing the technology. As AI agents took over routine tasks like customer verification, a specialized task force updated operating procedures and training programs to help employees transition into more complex, empathy-driven problem-solving. Frontline employees participated heavily in testing, which was an important part of the high success rate. "KPN saw that agentic AI could fundamentally reshape and reimagine how customer service is delivered," said Ruben Schaubroeck, senior partner at McKinsey & Company. "It allows them to orchestrate entire journeys around outcomes while keeping human experts focused where they add the most value." Scaling across the enterprise. The transformation is already delivering tangible results by reducing handling times and resolving issues efficiently without needing technician visits. Customers have responded positively, with early data showing a customer satisfaction score of 83, which is comparable to human-handled calls. KPN has set an ambition for agentic AI to handle 10% to 20% of customer service calls by 2027. Through its collaboration with McKinsey & Company, KPN did not just deploy a one-time solution - the company built the in-house capabilities needed to design and scale new AI tools independently across the enterprise. "Many organizations are still exploring the potential of agentic AI, while KPN is already integrating it into how work gets done every day. That kind of alignment between strategy, technology, and execution is what allows these programs to scale and deliver real impact," said Dirk Hofland, associate partner at McKinsey & Company. By transitioning from basic chatbots to autonomous voice agents, KPN is effectively breaking through the widespread AI paradox where extensive technology experimentation has historically failed to yield a material financial impact. According to McKinsey, this milestone signals a fundamental shift in how organizations approach AI transformation. "Organizations must reset their AI transformation approaches from scattered initiatives to strategic programs; from use cases to business processes; from siloed AI teams to cross-functional transformation squads; and from experimentation to industrialized, scalable delivery." McKinsey adds that the move toward agentic organizations represents a new operating paradigm in which companies must fundamentally rethink their business models and workflows with an AI-first mindset, rather than relying on traditional, isolated automation initiatives.

BT, Verizon join forces to create US$4 billion international joint venture.

BT, Verizon join forces to create US$4 billion international joint venture. A chief executive officer-designate has been appointed for the new company Published Mon, Jun 29, 2026 · 02:54 PM - Updated Mon, Jun 29, 2026 · 03:47 PM * BT and Verizon will hold equal voting rights in the new venture. PHOTO: REUTERS BT AND Verizon on Monday announced a deal to combine their international enterprise operations into a 50:50 joint venture, focusing on serving multinational clients and bringing together US$4 billion in combined annual revenue. Verizon has agreed to pay BT an equalisation payment of US$625 million, and both companies will hold equal voting rights in the new venture, which will serve more than 3,000 customers in over 180 countries, they said in a joint statement. "This is a very fragmented market and this could be the start of further consolidation," BT chief executive Allison Kirkby said in an interview with Reuters. "We could possibly look to bring in third parties at some point in the future." The deal marks a milestone for Kirkby, who has been steadily refocusing the 180-year-old British telecoms group on its home UK market while shedding international assets. Verizon CEO Dan Schulman, who has been pushing his own turnaround at the US wireless carrier, said the venture was "the clear answer" for international customers who need secure, flexible connectivity that works across borders and cloud environments. 'A scaled player' Asean intelligence. Get insights into businesses across South-east Asia BT and Verizon named Martijn Blanken, a former executive at Australia's Telstra and Netherlands-based KPN, as CEO-designate of the new company. Blanken will join BT Group from Sep 1, 2026, and work with both parent companies as they prepare to launch the joint venture. "We see this as a unique opportunity to create a scaled player to serve our multinational customers much better," Kirkby said, adding that the two companies' customer footprints were complementary, with only the odd overlap. Weakness in its international business has been a drag on earnings for BT, Britain's largest telecoms group. Media reports last month said that BT was reviving talks with firms such as AT&T, Orange and Verizon for the struggling business. The US$625 million payment to BT will be used to fund the venture, and any remaining amount will be used to pay down debt, Kirkby said.
