Longevity spotlight report. What stood out at Ringier's Personal Care Technology Convention 2026? * Posted on July 28, 2026 Earlier this month, Carol Du, Consultant, Beauty & Wellbeing, China, at Kline + Company, took the stage at Ringier's Personal Care Technology Convention (PCT) 2026 in Shanghai to discuss how longevity is reshaping the future of beauty. Across the conference, four themes consistently emerged, each with direct implications for where beauty innovation, investment, and consumer demand are heading next. Here are Du's key takeaways from the event: * Longevity Trend Is Redefining the Underlying Logic of the Beauty Industry Anti-aging research is no longer limited to superficial indicators such as wrinkles and sagging; it has expanded into deeper mechanisms such as extracellular matrix regeneration, longevity proteins, and stress-induced skin aging. What was particularly striking was that this trend has already translated into concrete brand actions: * Pechoin, jointly with Beijing Technology and Business University, released the 2026 East Asian Women's Holistic Anti-Aging White Paper at the conference and introduced its "anti-cortisol" skin care concept. Targeting cortisol-induced skin aging, the brand screened approximately 300 candidate botanical species and selected Schisandra chinensisand Campsis grandiflora to develop its Anti-Cortisol Complex. * Estée Lauder is focusing on extracellular matrix regeneration, advancing its serum products through a recombinant PDRN ingredient matrix. These brand initiatives validate one of the key points of Carol's presentation: Longevity is moving decisively from concept to commercial product development. * Delivery System Upgrades Are Becoming a Core Lever for Brands to Break Through "Ingredient Saturation" Across multiple forums at the conference, delivery system innovation was one of the most frequently discussed technological trends. "My observation is that as the 'ingredient-conscious' consumer base matures, competing solely on ingredient purity or concentration is no longer a sustainable differentiator," says Du. Delivery efficiency is emerging as the new frontier in brands' technological storytelling. For instance: * Proya shared its Hyper3DS multi-layer delivery technology, which addresses the coexistence of sensitivity and anti-aging needs through skin typing and layered delivery. * Yatsen Group's brand DR.WU demonstrated its "Triple-Action Renewal" framework, integrating delivery logic into product experience design. Together, these examples signal a broader shift in competitive advantage, from simply highlighting ingredients to demonstrating how effectively they are delivered. * Cell Technology and Repair/Anti-Inflammatory Mechanisms Are Forming the Scientific Foundation for Efficacy-Driven Beauty Brands The integrated model of oral and topical beauty products continued to gain momentum at this year's conference. * Inoherb's collaborative model with Longhua Hospital, affiliated with Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine attracted significant attention. By taking clinical skin concerns as the starting point for product development, the brand has successfully bridged the gap from "medical prescription" to "cosmetic formulation," significantly enhancing its credibility in the precision repair segment. * Meanwhile, L'Oréal introduced AI-powered quantification tools in male skin research. Its skin aging atlas covers over 300 reference charts and has been applied to more than 500,000 subjects globally, with AI auto-rating accuracy exceeding 94%, providing large-scale data support for cellular-level skin research. These developments underscore the growing importance of scientific credibility, with brands increasingly expected to build robust evidence at the cellular level. * The "Oral and Topical" Synergy Model Is Accelerating, With Inside-Out Solutions Moving Toward Industrialization The integrated model of oral and topical beauty products continued to gain momentum at this year's conference. * Pechoin has established supply chain partnerships with plant cell bio-manufacturing platforms such as PuRuiKang. Its Tremella fuciformisculture is the first botanical cell-based ingredient in China to complete the regulatory framework for both cosmetic and food use, providing a compliant template for developing "inside-out" product solutions. * Brands such as Guyu are also actively exploring oral and topical product combinations, reinforcing their position as the providers of holistic beauty solutions. As beauty increasingly intersects with health and wellness, competition will extend beyond topical skin care to more holistic, inside-out approaches that support consumers throughout their longevity journey. PCT 2026 demonstrated just how quickly longevity is moving from scientific discussion to commercial reality. Across every stage of the innovation pipeline, from ingredient delivery and cellular science to integrated inside-out solutions, the industry is shifting its focus toward helping consumers maintain healthier skin for longer, rather than simply correcting visible signs of aging. From Lifespan to Healthspan: Mapping Ingredients, Benefits, and Formats in Longevity Nutrition. * Posted on May 19, 2026 Longevity nutrition is no longer an abstract or aspirational concept. As consumer expectations shift from simply living longer to living better for longer, nutrition is increasingly expected to deliver credible, functional outcomes. Highlighting this shift, Kline's Elizabeth Thundow, Vice President, Food and Nutrition, took the stage at Vitafoods Europe 2026 to present From Lifespan to Healthspan: Mapping Ingredients, Benefits, and Formats in Longevity Nutrition. The presentation explores how the industry is moving beyond broad longevity narratives toward healthspan-led, ingredient-driven innovation, and what this means in practical terms for brands, ingredient suppliers, and product developers. Key insights include: * Why longevity nutrition is shifting from reactive "healthy ageing" to proactive healthspan optimisation across life stages * How successful innovation aligns ingredients, targeted health benefits, and formats from the outset * The ingredient families shaping the category today, including proteins & collagen, omega-3s, biotics & fibres, and cellular health bioactives * Why a new "middle space" between medical nutrition and everyday wellness is emerging as a major growth driver * The execution risks that can hinder innovation, from claims ambiguity to format misalignment Together, these insights demonstrate why credibility, evidence depth, and format strategy are becoming increasingly important as the longevity nutrition space continues to mature. China's professional beauty market enters a new era: how brands can win. * Posted on May 7, 2026 Decades of rapid expansion, China's professional beauty industry is entering a new phase, defined less by explosive growth and more by intensifying competition, channel disruption, and rising consumer expectations around performance and proof. At China Beauty Expo (CBE), Carol Du, Consultant of Kline + Company's Beauty and Wellbeing vertical, will explore what this shift means for brands across both professional skin care and professional hair care, and where the next wave of opportunity lies. Below is a preview of some of the key dynamics that are shaping the market today: Professional Skin Care market in China. Growth Slows as the Market Matures China's professional skin care market reached approximately USD 4.3 billion in 2025, having grown at a double-digit compound annual rate (CAGR) since 2020, according to Kline's Professional Skin Care Global Series analysis. However, that momentum has slowed considerably. Year-over-year growth dropped to just over 1% in 2025. The market is forecast to continue expanding at a modest pace through 2030, signaling a shift from rapid volume growth to a more mature, value-driven competitive environment where clinical efficacy and scientific credibility are becoming the primary differentiators. The competitive landscape also continues to evolve with new entrants backed by established industry players, including ALASTIN Skincare from Galderma, RQ PYOLOGY from Shiseido, and Clinique CX from The Estée Lauder Companies. Consumer Shift Toward Medical Aesthetic Treatments Medical care providers represent a small but significant share of the market. As consumers increasingly seek more visibly effective medical aesthetic treatments, med-spas continue to gain traction, while medical outlets broaden their offerings to include basic skin care services and spa brands expand further into the medical aesthetics channel. Although the broader market remains dominated by local players, international brands such as SkinCeuticals and Fillmed continue to hold strong positions within the medical aesthetics channel. Retail remains the dominant channel, accounting for approximately two-thirds of total market sales, with platforms such as Tmall, JD, and Douyin driving the majority of revenue. However, online growth is showing early signs of saturation as these platforms mature. Beauty institutes and spas account for about one-fifth of the market but continue to contract year over year, pressured by premium retail brands such as La Mer and La Prairie, which opened spa rooms within their brand counters. Regulation and the Rise of Evidence-Based Beauty Specialty treatments and serums are the leading product category, followed by moisturizers and cleansers. On the demand side, anti-aging is the primary skin concern driving purchases, ahead of dehydration and hyperpigmentation. The market is now entering a more proof-driven phase. Device-led treatments such as HydraFacial and photo rejuvenation are increasing demand for complementary products, while expansion into lower-tier cities is opening new growth corridors. At the same time, regulatory tightening by the NMPA, including a broad set of reform measures announced in late 2025, is limiting outlet expansion but helping to professionalize the industry. Professional Hair Care market in China. Rational Shoppers, Smarter Channels Diversification China's professional hair care market in 2025 was almost flat as in 2024 (+0.3%) but became more balanced and resilient, finds Kline's Professional Hair Care Global Series analysis. The recovery of offline consumption, supported by government policies, helped salon visits rebound in the second half of the year. As a result, the decline in salon sales narrowed, while e-commerce remained the main growth engine and brick-and-mortar retail continued to expand from a small base. The salon channel is still under pressure, but the pace of closures slowed. Moreover, several leading players improved their performance. Meanwhile, more brands expanded in offline retail to reduce dependence on salons and pure-play e-commerce, moving further into supermarkets and hypermarkets. Some players faced temporary supply issues, leading to short-term exits and re-entries in certain warehouse-club formats. Treatment Growth Offsets the Decline in Hair Color Hair care overall returned to low- to mid-single-digit growth, driven by strong demand for premium treatment products. Hair color, while still declining, showed a slower rate of contraction compared to previous years. Hair texturizing remained weak overall, while hair styling and sprays improved compared to 2024. This reflects a broader move toward treatment-led routines, echoing trends seen in professional skin care. From Promotion to Product Performance Focus Consumer behavior also evolved. Shoppers became more rational and demanding, focusing less on constant promotions and more on efficacy, value for money, and personal fit. Demand in hair color shifted toward more personalized, "natural yet elevated" looks, with softer, lower-saturation shades. In care, consumers increasingly favored high-performance treatments such as hair masks over traditional conditioners. Scalp care, nourishment, and shine were key innovation themes, with many new launches being centered on scalp oil control, vitality, anti-hair-loss, deep repair, and a smoother, more refined finish. For a deeper dive into these dynamics, join its presentation at China Beauty Expo, which will answer key questions such as: * Where are the real growth opportunities in the professional skin care and the professional hair care market? * How should channel strategy evolve as boundaries blur? * What does "winning" look like in an evidence-driven, performance-first landscape? Meet its experts Carrie Mellage, Vice President and Carol Du, Consultant, at the event to discuss how Kline + Company can help you assess opportunities, refine strategy, and unlock value in the evolving professional beauty market. Beyond market intelligence, Kline supports beauty companies and investors with growth strategy advisory services, including M&A, covering target screening, commercial due diligence, and post-acquisition value-creation.
