La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club begins phase two of $60 million renovation. The La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, a landmark 21-acre coastal resort with a 90-year legacy, has begun the second phase of its $60 million resort-wide renovation with the redesign of 90 guest rooms. Steps from the sand on one of Southern California's most celebrated private beaches, the project is slated for completion by Memorial Day 2027. Phase one of the renovation, completed in spring 2025, enhanced key areas of the Beach Club including the pool and deck, Club Dining restaurant, and back-of-house facilities and introduced a new Club Market. The guest room redesign continues that same commitment to refreshing the resort experience for members and guests. Carrier Johnson, an award-winning architecture firm with a dedicated luxury hotel design practice, is overseeing the architectural enhancements, which include expanding bathrooms and kitchens, creating more view-focused spaces, and introducing additional natural light to improve the overall guest stay. The interiors are being reimagined in collaboration with Oltra Design Studio, founded by Nicole Federico, a veteran of one of San Diego's leading hospitality design firms. Inspired by the spirit of La Jolla and the easy elegance of the California coast, every room will be reimagined from entry to living space. The warmth of sunlit pines, the quiet rhythm of the tides, and the enduring charm of Spanish architecture inform a palette rooted in sand, surf, and sky, with natural materials and sun-washed textures running throughout. Subtle nods to the Torrey Pines landscape and the area's Spanish influence add warmth and authenticity, creating an atmosphere that feels effortlessly welcoming and deeply rooted in place. Bedrooms center on a deep navy upholstered bed with brass nail head trim, flanked by light oak nightstands and a swivel lounge chair. Bathrooms feature a walk-in shower finished with tile, a fluted wood vanity with quartz countertops, and a wide lighted mirror. The same coastal aesthetic extends to kitchens and living spaces. Light oak cabinetry, quartz countertops, and a navy-painted island with antique brass hardware carry the palette into the kitchen, while living areas feature a navy sofa sleeper, white painted wainscoting, and a round dining table with upholstered chairs, equally suited to a family gathering or a quiet weekend by the water. La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club will remain open during the guest room renovation, which will be completed in stages to avoid any disruption. Members and guests will continue to enjoy direct beach access, a heated junior Olympic-size pool with seven private cabanas, 13 championship tennis courts, five pickleball courts, a nine-hole par-three golf course, fitness center, massage services, and beach services including complimentary chair and umbrella set up and firepits. Dining options include Club Dining, Walnut Lounge, Club Market, the woodfired pizza oven and patio, and the award-winning Marine Room. The property also features more than 18,000 square feet of flexible indoor and outdoor event space. For reservations and updates, visit www.LJBTC.com.
Conan Lorenzo honored with 2026 Dave Borelli Leadership Award. JUNE 26, 2026 - LEXIE WANNINGER USTA SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club Director of Tennis Conan Lorenzo has been named the recipient of the 2026 Dave Borelli Leadership Award, presented by the Orange County Community Tennis Association (OCCTA) and USTA Southern California. Named in honor of the late University of Southern California (USC) Women's Tennis Coach Dave Borelli, the award recognizes tennis professionals who demonstrate exceptional leadership, coaching excellence, mentorship, and service to the Southern California tennis community. For more than two decades, Lorenzo has played a significant role in growing and strengthening tennis throughout Southern California. Since becoming Director of Tennis at La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club in 2006, he has overseen one of Southern California's premier tennis programs, helping create opportunities for players of all ages and skill levels while fostering a culture centered on sportsmanship, player development, and community engagement. Beyond his current role at the Club, Lorenzo has made a lasting impact on tennis throughout the region through his involvement with USTA Southern California programs. He currently serves as the Junior Team Tennis San Diego Area League Coordinator (ALC), helping provide competitive and developmental opportunities for hundreds of young players throughout San Diego County. Under Lorenzo's leadership, San Diego's Junior Team Tennis (JTT) program has experienced remarkable growth since the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. After participation numbers declined significantly in 2021, the program has rebounded across every major category. Unique registrants have grown from 224 players in 2021 to a record 874 in 2026, while total registrations have increased to 1,100. The number of teams has climbed to 138 and captains have grown to 36, reflecting not only increased participation but also a stronger foundation of coaches and volunteers supporting the program. Across all age divisions, participation numbers are now at or near historic highs. "Conan has been a mainstay of our tennis JTT Leagues for as long as I can remember," explained Jeanette Lee, Conan's colleague and fellow JTT ALC. "Driven by a true love for the game and a deep commitment to the San Diego tennis community, his tireless dedication has been instrumental in growing our programs. We are incredibly grateful for his passion and leadership." Lorenzo's commitment to junior tennis has defined much of his career. Before joining La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, he spent five years as Director of Junior Programs at the George Barnes Junior Tennis Center in San Diego, where he helped develop young players and led multiple teams to sectional competition. He later coached and managed World Team Tennis teams at La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, guiding two teams to national championship titles. His contributions to youth tennis have earned recognition at both the sectional and national level. In 2019, Lorenzo received the USTA Janet Lauer National Organizer of the Year Award for his work expanding and supporting JTT opportunities. His impact can also be seen through the coaches and programs he has helped support throughout San Diego County. "Conan Lorenzo is the primary reason JTT is so successful in San Diego and continues to grow," said Stephen Thom, a JTT coach in San Diego. "His organization, communication, and passion for involving kids in the sport are truly amazing. He is always welcoming to new coaches and teams, and he consistently accommodates various special requests from clubs throughout the season. Conan helped grow my own program five years ago by introducing us to JTT. Because of his support, our club now has five teams competing every season." Those who know Lorenzo often point to his ability to develop not only tennis players, but also confident young people. His coaching philosophy reflects that approach: "Become the best person possible, on and off the court, and turning into a great tennis player will follow." "Anyone who has worked with Conan knows that this recognition is incredibly well deserved," said Michael O'Donohue, Managing Director of La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club. "His leadership, professionalism and commitment to our members, guests, staff and the tennis community have made a lasting impact." Lorenzo said he was honored to receive the award and credited the players, families, and coaches he has worked alongside throughout his career. "I've been fortunate to work with incredible players, families, and coaches over the years, and it's been rewarding to be part of their growth both on and off the court," Lorenzo said. The Dave Borelli Leadership Award honors individuals whose influence reaches far beyond wins and losses. Through his leadership at La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, his dedication to JTT, and his commitment to mentoring players and coaches throughout Southern California, Lorenzo has spent decades helping build stronger pathways into the sport. His selection for the 2026 Dave Borelli Leadership Award reflects a career dedicated to growing tennis, developing future generations of players, and strengthening the Southern California tennis community. La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club rocked by staff suits over sex assault, pay violations. The storied La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club in La Jolla Shores is facing a flurry of lawsuits from former employees who say the beachfront resort tolerated or engaged in misconduct ranging from sexual assault to wage violations. Filed in recent months, the complaints land as the property pushes through a major renovation and bring fresh legal and reputational pressure on management. As reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune, three separate cases have been lodged since April by former staffers who say the club and certain managers acted improperly. The matters are moving in different forums and seek a mix of damages, arbitration and, in one case, a jury trial. Allegations outlined in court filings. According to court records reviewed by the San Diego Union-Tribune, the complaints "allege wrongdoing ranging from sexual battery to gender discrimination to failure to pay wages." One suit, filed by a woman identified as S.L., says she was physically assaulted by a male employee in an office and later diagnosed with an incurable sexually transmitted disease; her filing names a co-defendant and seeks emotional damages and punitive relief. Other filings include a June wage-and-hour complaint by a former beach attendant and a separate gender-discrimination and retaliation complaint by a leadership-team member. Other claims and case timing. The leadership-team plaintiff alleges he was isolated, excluded from meetings and targeted after encouraging a sexual-assault report, and that the club and a named manager are responsible. The wage suit cites multiple California Labor Code violations - including missed meal and rest breaks, incorrect overtime and final-pay practices - and seeks unpaid wages, interest, attorneys' fees and other damages. One employment dispute is slated for arbitration early next year. Club profile and local context. The La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club runs several well-known La Jolla properties, including the Marine Room restaurant and the La Jolla Shores Hotel, and lists 2000 Spindrift Drive as its address on its website. La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club's site notes the property is family-owned and recently completed the first phase of a multi-million-dollar renovation. The legal attention arrives as the club promotes refreshed facilities to members and visitors. What the law and process look like. Employment disputes like these can move on parallel tracks: administrative wage claims, private arbitration and civil lawsuits are all options depending on the claims and any contracts. The California Department of Industrial Relations explains that wage claims can result in awards of unpaid wages, interest and penalties, while discrimination and harassment claims may be pursued through the state civil-rights agency or in court; remedies and timelines differ by forum. What to watch next. Key dates include an arbitration hearing tied to one suit that's scheduled for February and a jury trial date set later in the spring. If any case proceeds to public trial, testimony and records could reveal more about staffing, reporting practices and how the club handled earlier complaints. Club officials have told local outlets they do not comment on private or internal matters; the Union-Tribune reported the club provided a brief statement through local media to that effect. We'll track filings and court calendars and update as confirmed developments and official documents become available.
The La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club is pleased to announce the appointment of Alana Miranda as Director of Leisure & Business Travel.
