América Móvil buys Peru's WOW to expand fixed-broadband footprint.

América Móvil buys Peru's WOW to expand fixed-broadband footprint. WOW has built its business around a 100% fibre-optic network, serving customers in Lima and multiple regional markets. By bne IntelliNews July 22, 2026 América Móvil is reinforcing its position in Peru's fixed broadband market through the acquisition of fibre operator WOW Tel, a move that underlines the growing strategic importance of fibre infrastructure across Latin America and signals further consolidation in one of the region's fastest-expanding broadband markets. The Mexican telecommunications group, controlled by Carlos Slim, announced that its Peruvian subsidiary, Claro Perú, has agreed to acquire 100% of WOW from Liberty Latin America and Singapore-based investment firm Narvik Capital Partners. The companies did not disclose the value of the transaction. According to América Móvil, completion remains subject to customary closing conditions, including approval from Peru's competition authority, INDECOPI. Rather than representing an isolated acquisition, the deal fits into a broader regional investment strategy centred on expanding fibre assets. In March, América Móvil agreed to acquire a controlling stake in Brazilian broadband provider Desktop SA for approximately $750mn, strengthening its footprint in another high-growth fixed internet market. Chief executive Daniel Hajj previously stated that the company continues to identify attractive acquisition opportunities across Latin America and Eastern Europe. Peru has emerged as an increasingly attractive destination for fibre investment as demand for high-speed broadband continues to rise while fixed-line penetration still offers significant room for expansion. WOW has built its business around a 100% fibre-optic network, serving customers in Lima and multiple regional markets. Its cutting-edge infrastructure provides América Móvil with an opportunity to accelerate network expansion without relying exclusively on organic investment. WOW held a 12.22% share of Peru's fixed-internet market as of the first quarter, according to industry data. The transaction also reflects wider competitive dynamics in Latin American telecommunications, where operators are increasingly prioritising ownership of fibre networks as mobile revenues mature and demand for data-intensive services continues to grow. Control over fixed broadband infrastructure is becoming a critical competitive advantage, particularly as households consume more streaming, cloud-based applications and digital services. Liberty Latin America, which acquired a minority stake in WOW in 2021, has continued reshaping its regional portfolio in recent years, while private equity investors have increasingly monetised telecommunications assets following periods of rapid infrastructure deployment. The sale therefore aligns with broader industry trends of capital recycling and consolidation. Investors will also view the acquisition alongside América Móvil's broader financial outlook. According to estimates cited by Banorte ahead of the company's second-quarter 2026 results, the telecoms giant is expected to post revenue growth of 3.8%, EBITDA growth of 4.2% and an 8.9% increase in net profit, reflecting resilient operating performance despite a more competitive regional environment. Should regulators approve the acquisition, América Móvil would strengthen its position in Peru at a time when fibre infrastructure is increasingly shaping competitive dynamics across Latin America's telecommunications sector. LLA deploys US$74mn to launch Jamaica's first 5G network.

LLA deploys US$74mn to launch Jamaica's first 5G network. Bnamericas Published: Tuesday, June 16, 2026 Amid hurricane reconstruction spending, Liberty Latin America (LLA) has officially launched Jamaica's first commercial 5G mobile network through its local brand Flow Jamaica. The rollout, unveiled this month, represents a US$74mn investment in mobile infrastructure, comprising US$50mn in equipment and systems and US$24mn in spectrum licenses. The switched-on network comes live providind coverage to more than 70% of Jamaica's population, according to government and company information. Jamaica's minister of industry, investment and commerce, Aubyn Hill Vaz, described the launch as a "national development moment." Flow Jamaica, legally registered as Cable & Wireless Jamaica Limited, is owned by Liberty Latin America, the regional telecommunications group spun off from Liberty Global and active across Latin America and the Caribbean. The Jamaica deployment comes as LLA balances strategic infrastructure investments with a more disciplined capital expenditure approach. The group invested approximately US$500mn in 2025, down from US$540mn in 2024, and has indicated it will prioritize cash flow generation while continuing to fund key growth projects in 2026. Among those priorities are submarine cable projects, 5G expansion and reconstruction efforts in Jamaica following the impact of Hurricane Melissa. Prior to the launch, Flow executives said the company had already invested US$85mn in rebuilding and upgrading networks damaged by Melissa, including fiberization, underground infrastructure and network restoration work. The storm reduced Caribbean revenue by approximately US$20mn and caused extensive damage to LLA's fixed-line infrastructure. According to the company, nearly 130,000 homes passed in Jamaica were fully damaged or destroyed. "Through the course of the year, we will continue to restore homes and B2B customers with a focus on return on investment and innovation," LLA CEO Balan Nair said during the company's February earnings discussion. "We look forward to building back stronger in Jamaica and on a run-rate basis, with target being back close to pre-hurricane levels of profitability by the end of 2026." Regional 5G strategy Jamaica becomes the latest market in Liberty Latin America's regional 5G portfolio. The company has already activated commercial 5G services in Puerto Rico, Panama, Costa Rica, the Cayman Islands and Barbados. In Costa Rica, LLA selected Ericsson as a key supplier for its 5G deployment. In Puerto Rico, the company partnered with Ericsson and Samsung to support network rollout and modernization efforts. In Panama, LLA launched commercial 5G services through subsidiary Cable & Wireless Panamá, operating under the Más Móvil brand. The Panamanian network is also backed by Ericsson infrastructure and cloud-based network virtualization technologies. LILA reports $405M Q1 adjusted OIBDA, announces $500M preferred equity dividend

Liberty Latin America reported solid first-quarter 2026 results, adding 50,000 mobile postpaid subscribers driven by fixed-mobile convergence and prepaid-to-postpaid migration. The company posted $405 million in adjusted OIBDA, exceeding expectations despite headwinds from Hurricane Melissa and B2B project timing. Adjusted free cash flow before distributions to non-controlling interests rose approximately $40 million year-over-year. Jamaica's operations recovered faster than anticipated, with strong residential reconnections and mobile growth following the hurricane. The company announced plans to distribute $500 million in preferred equity paying 9%, effectively splitting equity into a return-focused instrument and geared common equity.
