The Lakers are being sold to American businessmen Josh Kushner and Bob Iger for over $12 billion, a record-breaking price, multiple sources told ESPN.
Former Virginia coach Tony Bennett has joined the Los Angeles Lakers as an NBA draft adviser to general manager Rob Pelinka. Bennett, a two-time national coach of the year, compiled a 364-136 record at Virginia from 2009-24 and led the Cavaliers to the 2019 national championship. Pelinka praised Bennett's track record in building culture with high-character players, calling him "an incredible asset to our basketball leadership". Bennett led Virginia to six ACC regular-season championships and previously coached at Washington State. Bennett played four years in the NBA, including three seasons with Charlotte, from 1992-95. Virginia recently honoured him by naming the court at John Paul Jones Arena after him.
The NBA's average team valuation has reached $5.52 billion, an 18% increase from last year, with three franchises—the Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks and Los Angeles Lakers—now valued at $10 billion or more. Average revenue across the league's 30 teams was $416 million during the 2024-25 season, up 6.7% year-on-year. The valuation surge is partly driven by a new national media rights package that began in the 2025-26 season, worth $75.9 billion over 11 years according to S&P Global. The new deal represents 2.6 times the league's previous rights package on an average annual basis, helping push NBA team valuations to record levels.
The Buss family has agreed to sell a majority stake of the Los Angeles Lakers to businessman Mark Walter.
