TULSA, OKLA (KTUL) - Delivery is taking to the skies in Tulsa. Manna Air Delivery officially launched its first commercial air delivery service in the Tulsa area Wednesday, using aircraft to deliver food and other everyday essentials to customers. The company's first operational base is located near Cherry Street. The launch included a demonstration of the first delivery flight, showing how an order is loaded into the aircraft before it takes off and flies to a customer's backyard. Manna says the aircraft first rises about 200 feet before traveling to the delivery location. Once it reaches the customer, it lowers to about 50 feet before gently delivering the package. Once an order is loaded into the aircraft, Manna says the delivery can take about three minutes. Several Tulsa businesses are among the first to partner with Manna, including Andolini's Pizzeria, Paréa Coffee, Sapori and Firefly Brew. Andolini's owner Mike Bausch said the company created a separate menu specifically for Manna, with items that fit the aircraft's size and weight limits. Bausch said he is excited to see the technology come to Tulsa. "It's still awe inspiring because you're like, oh wow," Bausch said. "It's really cool to see it fly with food." Firefly Brew owner Rashel Hudson said the business does not currently work with traditional delivery services like DoorDash, Uber Eats or Grubhub. She said she decided to partner with Manna because she sees the technology potentially becoming a larger part of the delivery industry. "It's really cool. I see this becoming the norm and competing with the DoorDashes," Hudson said. Sapori owner Al Hashemi said the service could benefit both restaurants and customers. "It's a great opportunity for restaurants and also the consumers," Hashemi said. For now, Manna's air delivery service covers customers within a two-mile radius of its Cherry Street base. Customers can download the Manna app and enter their address to see if their location is eligible for delivery. If it is, customers can order from participating businesses and select a delivery time. The app also allows customers to track the aircraft while their order is in flight. During the launch period, Manna will operate on a limited schedule with service expanding to seven days a week 9am to 9pm as operations ramp up. Manna says its staff picks up orders from participating businesses and brings them back to the base, where they are loaded into the aircraft. The company says the aircraft go through checks before flights and on a weekly basis. Manna also says its staff is trained and certified and keeps eyes on the aircraft during flights. Terri O'Keeffe, director of corporate affairs for Manna Air Delivery, said Tulsa was a good fit because of its aviation history and size. "Tulsa is a perfect city. They have a huge history in aviation so there is a huge workforce here," O'Keeffe said. Manna says it plans to expand its service in Tulsa, although there is not yet a timeline for expanding beyond the current two-mile delivery radius.
