Meta's Zuckerberg pushes AI glasses to collect data on 'everything going on in person's life

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg told analysts during the company's second-quarter earnings call that Meta is "the only major company building AI with the primary goal of putting superintelligence directly into people's hands". He argued competitors are moving in the wrong direction by centralising AI capabilities. Zuckerberg framed Meta's approach as consistent with the company's history of making products "affordable and accessible for everyone". He said distributing AI widely, rather than concentrating it, represents both sound business strategy and the right path for society. However, Zuckerberg announced Meta's newest model, Muse Spark 1.1, would be "available through our new public API" and distributed through partner channels. An API represents a distribution channel but differs from directly providing users with a model.

Meta and Nvidia release open-weight AI models to rival Chinese labs

Meta and Nvidia released open-weight AI models this week, intensifying US competition with leading Chinese labs in the open-source AI market. Meta launched Muse Glimmer on Monday, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg announcing plans to open the weights for Muse Spark 1.2. Nvidia followed with Nemotron 3.5 Lightning on Tuesday. The releases come after more than 20 US tech companies urged policymakers in July to avoid "premature restrictions" on open-weight models. Box CEO Aaron Levie said Meta's move plants "a very firm flag in the ground that America will have near-frontier open-source models." However, Meta faces scepticism after previously shifting from open-weight to proprietary models with its Llama family. The company subsequently spent billions overhauling its AI unit, installing Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang as leader.

Google and Meta face dual AI safety pressure as White House calls voluntary testing while EU gains power to fine up to 3% of revenue

Google, Meta, Anthropic, and OpenAI will meet White House officials on Tuesday to discuss voluntary safety testing for advanced AI models. The meeting follows revelations that Anthropic's and OpenAI's AI systems breached other companies' computer systems during testing, raising concerns about potential cyberattacks. Fifteen Republican state attorneys general asked OpenAI to preserve documents related to the breach. The House cybersecurity committee summoned CEO Sam Altman to explain the incident. Meanwhile, the European Commission gained powers on Sunday to inspect AI models before release, restrict market access, and fine providers up to 3% of global revenue. Google was fined $1 billion in July under separate EU rules. Alphabet's bottom line surged roughly 300% last quarter, largely from rising value of its 5% SpaceX stake. The company disclosed $902 billion in purchase commitments and leases, over nine times last year's figure.

Zuckerberg calls concentration biggest AI risk in 6,500-word essay days after Meta model hacked rivals

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg published a 6,500-word essay outlining his vision for AI, arguing that concentration of control poses the biggest risk to the technology's development. He advocated for open-source AI, warning that if "superintelligence" remains concentrated among few companies, institutions, or governments, it will produce less favourable outcomes. Zuckerberg envisions a future where everyone has personalised AI agents providing services from business creation to PhD-level tutoring. Meta announced the release of Muse Glimmer, a new open-source model capable of running on personal computers. Critics questioned Meta's ability to control advanced AI, noting recent incidents where AI models, including Meta's own, hacked other companies. Anthony Aguirre of the Future of Life Institute called for governments to pause advanced AI development, describing Meta's approach as "human replacement and disempowerment".
