Minor acquiring Bonchon Korean chicken chain. B1.6-billion deal expected to increase royalty and franchise fee income PUBLISHED: 11 Aug 2026 at 17:22 Ask Bangkok Post anything How will the Bonchon acquisition boost Minor International's earnings? How is Minor International funding the Bonchon acquisition? Why is Minor International acquiring Bonchon's intellectual property rights? SET-listed Minor International Plc (MINT) has announced plans to acquire 100% of Bonchon International Inc and its Korean fried chicken restaurant business. The acquisition will be carried out by MFG International Holding (Singapore) Pte Ltd, a subsidiary of Minor International, the company said in a filing to the Stock Exchange of Thailand on Tuesday. The Thai hotel and food services group will acquire the 55% stake held in Bonchon by VIG Partners, a Korean private equity group, and 45% held by Seo Jin-deok, who founded the restaurant chain in 2002. The transaction is valued at US$50 million (1.65 billion baht) with the final price subject to adjustment based on the value of underlying assets at the closing date, expected to be later this month. Minor International said the acquisition would secure ownership of Bonchon's intellectual property rights globally, excluding the Americas. "This move is expected to enhance MINT's earnings through increased royalty and franchise fee income," it added. The deal will be funded through borrowing from financial institutions, the company said. The first Bonchon Chicken branch in Thailand opened in 2011. The business grew rapidly, in line with Thai consumers' growing appetite for Korean food, and today there are 110 Bonchon outlets under Minor Food Group in Thailand and Australia.
Thailand's Minor Group is acquiring 100% of Korean chicken franchise Bonchon International from private equity firm VIG Partners in a deal estimated at 300 billion won. The parties recently signed a stock purchase agreement and aim to conclude the transaction by the end of August. Minor Group operates global foodservice brands including Burger King and Dairy Queen through its Minor Foods subsidiary, running over 2,700 stores across 68 countries. The company has operated over 100 Bonchon franchise stores in Thailand since 2019. Bonchon, launched in South Korea in 2002, expanded to the US in 2006 and now operates around 500 stores globally, including over 150 in America. VIG Partners acquired a 55% stake in 2018 for approximately 60 billion won.
The exclusive allure of owning the shore. 27 Jul 2026, 12:00 am At Anantara Desaru Coast Residences, a rare collection of beachfront villas by Minor International reframes luxury as privacy, space and a life well lived with the shore at your doorstep. The best five-star resorts know how to elevate arrival to a six-star experience. And yes, there is such a thing. It starts the moment you step through the door, in the way the light falls, the way the air moves, the way someone anticipates exactly what you need before you have even thought to ask. It's a sense of calmness and contentment, derived from intuitive service and spaces curated for wellness. And for nearly 50 years, Minor International has been in the business of making that feeling a home. At Minor, we have always focused on being experiential rather than transactional" - Heinecke From a single beachfront resort in Pattaya in 1978, Minor International has grown into one of Asia-Pacific's most celebrated hospitality groups with over 600 hotels across 70 countries, more than 2,700 restaurants and a constellation of hotel brands that include Anantara, NH Collection, Avani, Tivoli and Oaks. Yet for all its scale, the soul of the group remains unchanged: a deep, almost instinctive belief that luxury is not a status, but a given way of living. "At Minor, we have always focused on being experiential rather than transactional," says Bill Heinecke, founder and chairman of Minor International. "We shaped experiences around destination, culture and everyday rituals. Luxury has become closely linked to quality of life - privacy, green spaces, adaptability and the freedom to live in a way that feels personal and restorative." It is this philosophy that gave rise to Minor Residences, the group's ultra-luxury branded real estate arm that translates almost three decades of hotel excellence into private ownership. Each residence in its portfolio is conceived not as a property investment, but as a life well-lived: managed with the attentiveness of a five-star hotel, designed for generations and rooted in the culture and landscape that surround it. Owners enjoy resort-level facilities, bespoke à la carte services and the option of a professionally managed rental programme in this rare balance of indulgence and intelligent investment. Hospitality-centric thinking means we design for a complete lifestyle rather than just a physical structure" - Tamthai "We only commit to projects in strategic, high-growth locations that offer long-term value," says Micah Tamthai, acting CEO and chief operating officer of Minor Lifestyle and Real Estate. "The location must support both lifestyle and investment potential." In practice, finding an address that delivers on all of that is quite rare, but one such location is where the Malay Peninsula meets the sea. Amid the 17km of pristine shoreline at Johor's Desaru Coast stands one of Malaysia's most coveted addresses. Anantara Desaru Coast Residences - the first and only beachfront branded residences in Malaysia - is a collection of just 20 private pool villas, set within the grounds of the renowned Anantara Desaru Coast Resort & Villas. Completed and ready for immediate ownership, the residences offer three- and four-bedroom villas ranging from 288 to 597 sq m, each fully furnished and thoughtfully designed to capture the rhythm of coastal living. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the South China Sea, expansive sundecks beckon for books and golden tans, and private infinity pools that blur the line between indoor and outdoor spaces. Every detail, from architecture to material palette, is the result of considered choices. "Our buyers prioritise health, wellness and sustainability, so our designs include flexible living spaces that can easily be converted into home offices, spas or gyms, as well as expansive green areas that are central to each development," says Tamthai. "Sustainability is now also a core expectation, so we have prepared the foundation to integrate eco-friendly features like electric vehicle charging, solar panels and rainwater harvesting, while ensuring the structure is ready for future upgrades so properties align with environmental values. Hospitality-centric thinking means we design for a complete lifestyle rather than just a physical structure." Ownership here is not simply about the stunning villas, but waking up to a life already running smoothly around you. Enjoy privileged access to the resort's world-class facilities, including beachfront infinity pools, a fully-equipped watersports centre, and dedicated kids' and teens' clubs, as well as 20% off spa experiences at the award-winning Anantara Spa and a curated selection of restaurants and bars. Personalised services - think private butler assistance and in-residence dining - further enhance the elevated lifestyle. Investors can take advantage of a professionally managed rental programme with a 60:40 revenue share in favour of the owner as an efficient pathway to generate returns while retaining the flexibility to enjoy their residence for personal use. Four-Bedroom Duplex Villa - Living Room Three-Bedroom Beach Front Villa - Living Room Four-Bedroom Duplex Villa - Bedroom Cleverly positioned for both leisure and connectivity, Desaru Coast is just a 105-minute drive or 90-minute ferry ride from Singapore, and within easy reach of Senai International Airport. The destination is also part of the Johor- Singapore Special Economic Zone, a significant long-term value driver for property in the region. Developed by Minor International in partnership with Destination Resorts and Hotels (DRH) - a subsidiary of Malaysia's sovereign wealth fund Khazanah Nasional - Anantara Desaru Coast Residences was crowned winner of the Best Luxury Landed Development at the Asia Property Awards (Malaysia) 2020. Of the original 20 villas, only nine remain available as prescient buyers quickly snapped up the coveted units in anticipation of high demand. After all, beachfront residences of this calibre are rare finds and excellent portfolio additions. "Years from now, I hope residents feel a genuine sense of ease and tranquillity - a noticeable shift in everyday life that feels calmer, more balanced and more intentional," says Heinecke. "Wellness is no longer an amenity, but a defining principle of living that transforms the home into a private sanctuary. Ultimately, their [the residents'] quality of life should be quietly elevated not through status, but through how consistently supported, comfortable and well they feel each day. In that sense, luxury is no longer occasional, but continuous." For details, visit anantaradesaru-residences.com, email [email protected] or contact +60 19 241 2296
