Naughty Dog co-founder Andy Gavin revealed that the studio was sold to Sony in 2001 due to skyrocketing development costs. Between 1999-2001, the budget for Jak and Daxter exceeded $15 million, and by 2004, AAA game costs like Jak 3 reached $45-50 million. Gavin noted that self-funding these projects was stressful, and selling to Sony was the right decision as AAA game costs have continued to rise, now reaching $300-$500 million. Gavin left Naughty Dog in 2004.
At this year's 2024 Game Awards, Naughty Dog unveiled a brand new video game called 'Intergalactic: "The Heretic Prophet."
