Nuffield Health Glasgow introduces Wattbike Healthspan Check. * Posted on August 4, 2026 The Healthspan Check provides valuable insights into cardiovascular health (Image: Wattbike) Nuffield Health has installed nine new Wattbike Air-Pro bikes across two of its Glasgow clubs. The investment sees five bikes installed at Nuffield Health Glasgow Central and four at Nuffield Health Glasgow Giffnock, giving members access to Wattbike's latest commercial indoor cycling technology as well as the innovative Wattbike Healthspan Check, which can be completed in as little as six minutes. The Healthspan Check is a science-backed assessment that converts an estimated VO[2] Max and Cardiorespiratory Fitness (CRF) score into a single, easy-to-understand Healthspan Score, enabling members to benchmark their aerobic fitness against others of the same age and gender. Widely recognised as one of the strongest indicators of overall health, cardiorespiratory fitness reflects how efficiently the heart, lungs and muscles work together during exercise. Designed for accessibility, the Healthspan Check uses a submaximal protocol requiring participants to work at approximately 7/10 RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion), making it suitable for a broad range of members while still delivering highly accurate fitness data. On the installation, Aaron Wijetunga, Fitness Manager at Nuffield Health & Fitness Glasgow Central, said: "At Nuffield Health, Well Nation is committed to helping people live healthier lives through fitness, wellbeing and preventative healthcare. The introduction of the Wattbike Air-Pro gives members access to advanced fitness assessment and training technology. "The bikes have already proved incredibly popular, particularly at peak times, and Well Nation'll also be introducing the Healthspan Check into its kickstart onboarding programme. "The Healthspan Check provides valuable insights into cardiovascular health, helping members make informed decisions about their fitness and wellbeing, while giving our personal trainers another tool to help track progress and support long-term health improvements." A Healthspan Score can be established in as little as six minutes through a fully guided assessment on the bike's console. Because the test is submaximal, users never need to exercise to exhaustion, making it an effective and accessible tool for member onboarding and ongoing fitness tracking. Chris Maule, Northern Sales Manager at Wattbike, added: "Well Nation is delighted to expand its partnership with Nuffield Health through the installation of nine Wattbike Air-Pro bikes across the Glasgow Central and Glasgow Giffnock clubs. Nuffield Health has long championed evidence-based approaches to improving health and wellbeing, making it a natural partner for Wattbike.
Nuffield Health strengthens commitment to outstanding theatre standards through AfPP partnership. * July 02, 2026 Nuffield Health has announced a new partnership with the Association for Perioperative Practice (AfPP) that will see all its hospitals work towards AfPP accreditation - a major step in strengthening consistency, quality and safety in theatre care across its national network. Widely regarded across the sector as the gold standard mark of excellence, patients are at the heart of AfPP Accreditation. It offers patients meaningful reassurance that each Nuffield Health hospital is working to the same high standards of safety, quality and perioperative practice. Two of Nuffield Health's hospitals have already achieved successful accreditation. As part of its ambition to provide the best healthcare and support people can receive anywhere, Nuffield Health will now embed the AfPP framework across its remaining 33 hospitals, with a target of full rollout by the end of 2027. The partnership, announced at Nuffield Health's York Hospital, will see AfPP work alongside teams across Nuffield Health to further strengthen patient safety by embedding recognised best practice across its hospital theatre services. AfPP Accreditation is a collaborative, structured review that benchmarks theatre services against the AfPP Standards & Recommendations for Safe Perioperative Practice (2022), as well as national frameworks including the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist and the National Safety Standards for Invasive Procedures (NatSSIPs). The process supports theatre teams to reflect on practice, recognise what is working well and identify opportunities for improvement. In doing so, it gives staff confidence that they are delivering care to a consistently high standard and helps build a culture of continuous improvement. Alison McCourt, Chief Quality Officer at Nuffield Health, said: "This is an important milestone that reflects its ambition to deliver the best health and care services patients can get anywhere. By working with AfPP as a trusted partner, Clinical Services Journal will implement these standards consistently across all 35 of its hospitals. "This standardised approach will give patients confidence and assurance that they will receive the highest quality of care, no matter where they are treated within Nuffield Health. It also strengthens our teams by providing clear frameworks and support to continue delivering outstanding perioperative care every day." Alex Duke, Chief Executive Officer at AfPP, said: "Clinical Services Journal is delighted to be working with Nuffield Health on this programme. Its shared focus on patient safety and professional excellence makes this a natural partnership. "Accreditation is an important marker, but it is ultimately a reflection of strong collaboration, engaged teams and a commitment to continuous improvement. Nuffield Health is demonstrating their wholesale commitment to holding the highest standards in patient safety and quality - and we look forward to working alongside them to further strengthening this within perioperative care." This announcement follows Nuffield Health's recent achievement of ANTT (Aseptic Non Touch Technique) Gold status across 92 sites, including all hospitals and fitness and wellbeing centres offering primary care services.
Nuffield Health Cheltenham Hospital rolls out new non-surgical treatment for chronic nasal condition. Nuffield Health is now offering a new type of treatment for people with chronic rhinosinusitis and nasal polyps at its Cheltenham hospital, to tackle the root cause of severe nasal polyps, instead of just the symptoms. By Rachel Roberts | Published Thursday 18 June 2026 Adults in Gloucestershire who suffer from chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps can now benefit from a new, non-surgical treatment from Nuffield Health Cheltenham Hospital. Approved for use in the UK in February 2026, the treatment, known as biologic therapy, is now available through Nuffield Health's specialist ENT service. Nasal polyps are non-cancerous growths that develop in the lining of the nose and sinuses as a result of ongoing inflammation. While surgery can remove these growths, they can sometimes grow back, leading to a cycle of recurring symptoms that health authority, NICE, acknowledges can 'significantly impact quality of life'. Symptoms include constant nasal blockage, loss of smell and taste, facial pressure, and fatigue due to poor quality sleep. Traditional treatments involve the use of steroids, which broadly suppress the immune system, while the newer treatment is changing how the condition is managed by tackling the root cause of the problem, rather than the symptoms alone. Biologic therapy targets specific parts of the immune response that cause inflammation by blocking key immune signals, focusing on what is known as 'type 2 inflammation'. Successful clinical trials have shown the treatment not only shrinks the polyps, but also reduces the accompanying symptoms, when combined with standard care. The treatment can be administered by injection every two to four weeks, with many patients able to self-administer at home following specialist guidance provided by Nuffield Health. Adults whose condition has not responded to sinus surgery or steroid medication may be eligible for biologic therapy, with patients assessed on an individual basis, taking their medical history, symptom severity, and any other related conditions into account. Patients in Gloucestershire and the surrounding areas can access a full diagnostic assessment - which can involve nasal endoscopy and a review of treatment history - through the ENT service at Nuffield Health Cheltenham Hospital. Care is led by experienced consultants including Mr Okechukwu Okonkwo, a consultant ENT surgeon at Nuffield Health who specialises in the management of nasal polyps and other complex sinus diseases. Nuffield Health's chief executive Alex Perry, theatre manager Caroline Richardson and hospital director Stacey Brunton with members of the Vanguard team (Image: Supplied) A North East hospital has unveiled new robotic technology to help surgeons carry out more precise knee replacement operations. Nuffield Health Tees Hospital in Norton has introduced the Rosa robotic-arm system as part of its focus on innovation and patient care. Stacey Brunton, hospital director at Nuffield Health Tees Hospital, said: "The introduction of robotic-arm assisted surgery at Tees reflects both our commitment to innovation and the strength of our long-established services. ROSA robotic assisted surgical equipment (Image: Supplied) "For over four decades we have been proud to support our community with safe, high-quality care. "This technology supports our consultants in delivering precise, personalised treatment, while continuing our focus on trusted patient care and experience." The Rosa system supports surgeons in planning and carrying out knee replacements with improved precision and alignment, helping to achieve better implant fit and function. This technology allows procedures to be tailored to each individual patient. Anwar Jafri, consultant orthopaedic surgeon, said: "This is an advanced tool that supports me in performing highly accurate knee replacement procedures. "As the surgeon, I remain in control throughout, but the technology provides valuable data and insights that help refine the positioning of the implant. "It enables careful assessment during surgery and supports precise adjustments before completion." Fellow consultant Manju Ramappa described the technology as a significant step forward in patient care. Nuffield Health Tees Hospital (Image: Supplied) Mr Ramappa said: "Rosa represents the next step in supporting precision in knee replacement surgery. "It allows me to enhance the planning and delivery of treatment for my patients. "I'm pleased to be able to offer this as part of the comprehensive orthopaedic service at Nuffield Health Tees Hospital." The launch of the Rosa system is part of a wider programme of investment at the Norton hospital, including the recent completion of two operating theatres and upgrades to diagnostic equipment. These improvements build on more than 45 years of delivering healthcare to the Teesside community. Nuffield Health also recently announced a £200 million partnership with GE Healthcare to invest in the latest AI-enabled diagnostic equipment. Total knee replacement surgery is a common and effective treatment for patients living with knee arthritis. The success of surgery is closely linked to the fit and function of the new knee implant. Date announced for Nuffield Health Glasgow West End closure. The closing date of a popular Glasgow gym has been announced. The Nuffield Health Glasgow West End Fitness and Wellbeing Club in Finnieston, will permanently close its doors on August 31, 2026. Image of staff at Nuffield Health (Image: Supplied) The news comes after plans were lodged to knock the gym down to create 391 homes for rent on the land. A petition against the project amassed over 2,000 signatures as gym members warned that the closure would have a 'devastating' impact on the community. However, the plans - which were lodged by real estate firm Redevco - were approved. It comes as Nuffield Health's lease for the site is set to expire this November. Landowners Redevco said there were no plans for this to be renewed, but later suggested it was "open to having discussions" with the community about retaining gym use until construction works were ready to start. Artwork of plans for new homes on the Nuffield site (Image: Supplied) In an email shared with the Glasgow Times, it reads: "We're sorry to share the news that the club will be closing permanently. We know how much this space means to our members and truly appreciate the community that's been built here. "While we explored every possible option to continue operating, the landlord has made the decision to redevelop the site. As a result, we're unfortunately unable to remain open." The statement continued: "We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for being part of our Glasgow West End community. Your support, enthusiasm, and trust in Nuffield Health have been greatly appreciated by our team, and it has been a privilege to support your health and wellbeing journey." (Image: Sourced) Those signed up to the West End gym will continue to have full access to the facilities, classes, and training sessions as normal until the closing date. Meanwhile, gym goers will also have access to the newly upgraded Nuffield Health Glasgow Central Fitness and Wellbeing Club, which is located nearby, or can transfer their membership to Glasgow Central which features the likes of a new recovery zone, renewed premium shower and changing facilities.
