OSEA

OSEA

Seaweed-based skincare brand with DTC

Overview

OSEA Malibu makes seaweed-infused skincare for women and men. It sells cleansers, serums, oils, and moisturizers through direct-to-consumer channels (its Shopify site with a subscription program) and retail partners like Ulta Beauty, Nordstrom, Bluemercury, and Credo. How it works: its products use seaweed-derived ingredients (notably Undaria Algae Body Oil) and other clean, vegan, cruelty-free ingredients. The brand started in a family garage and grew by moving to DTC under Melissa Palmer and expanding through partnerships; it also has a climate-conscious stance (Ocean Positive) and a climate-neutral certification. The model balances about half of revenue from DTC subscriptions and product sales, with the other half from wholesale to retailers. Its goal is to provide transparent, clean, ocean-based skincare that works for people aged 20–60, expanding to male consumers, while maintaining family-owned values and sustainable practices.

  • OSEA’s September 2026 Nordstrom and Ulta events celebrate its 30th anniversary and drive sell-through.
  • Undaria Algae Body Oil ranked first among 2026 luxury body oils, sustaining premium demand.

What critics are saying

  • General Atlantic’s board control and growth mandate pressure margins if international launches stall.
  • Dupes and discounting at Ulta and Nordstrom compress pricing on Undaria body care.

What makes OSEA unique

  • Melissa and Jenefer Palmer still run OSEA after General Atlantic’s 2025 minority investment.
  • OSEA’s seaweed-first positioning and Undaria Algae Body Oil remain its signature moat.
  • Ulta, Nordstrom, and Nordstrom-exclusive sets keep OSEA premium, visible, and nationally distributed.
