Active Roles version 8.5 now available: 4 new features. 16 Jul 2026 Modernize and protect your Active Directory (AD) using Active Roles by One Identity Active Roles version 8.5 provides several highly requested features to fortify and enrich the integration capabilities of Active Roles. These new features bring unmatched flexibility and security to Active Directory environments, supporting customers where they are today and where they want to go in the future. Secure REST API for direct integration In this release, One Identity addressed Active Roles customers' desire to integrate directly with external platforms via API. For this reason, One Identity LLC now provide a secure REST API which enables integrations to directly modify AD and Entra objects and attributes. This capability ensures user data stays accurate across systems, while preserving governance and limiting permissions to only the operations required. Enhanced SPML support To further demonstrate its commitment to supporting Entra ID, version 8.5 also offers enhanced SPML support. Enhanced SPML support enables the creation, update, deletion and LookUp for proper data exchange for Entra Groups through the active Roles SPML provider. This further enhances Active Roles' support for Entra ID. Windows LAPS (LAPS 2.0) support Active Roles now provides Windows LAPS (LAPS 2.0) support alongside Microsoft LAPS (LAPS 1.0) for domain joined devices. From version 8.5 onwards, organizations can enhance the security of their infrastructure by managing LAPS related permissions through Active Roles for both encrypted and non-encrypted passwords. Improved Federation support in RSTS Improved Federation support in RSTS (redistributable secure token server) is also included in Active Roles version 8.5, providing additional options for configuring authentication to the Web Interface and the REST API. This important feature, which can be installed as a separate component, offers expanded configuration options via the Active Roles Configuration Center, including SSL configuration, signing certificate management, redirection, and cluster management. Modernize Hybrid AD and Entra ID environments Together, these capabilities reflect the ongoing investment at One Identity in helping organizations modernize their Active Directory environments without compromising security or control. Whether it's extending governance to cloud-only resources, simplifying integration through a secure REST API, or strengthening credential management with expanded LAPS support, Active Roles version 8.5 and beyond gives customers the flexibility to meet their identity governance needs across hybrid AD and Entra ID wherever they are in their modernization journey, and wherever that journey takes them next. As organizations continue to navigate the complexities of hybrid identity, Active Roles by One Identity remains committed to delivering the secure, scalable tools needed to manage that transition with confidence. It is always recommended that customers upgrade to the latest release to get the most value from their Active Roles implementation.
One Identity now independent, will set up shop in Cork to focus on identity security. European shift for company born out of Dell aligns with long-term investments One Identity is becoming an independent company and shifting its operations to Europe. A release from the firm says it will set up a new global headquarters in Cork, Ireland, and provide unified identity governance in a bid to capitalize on a combined identity governance and administration (IGA) and privileged access management (PAM) market estimated at around $10 billion. "Identity is now the control plane for enterprise security," says Praerit Garg, CEO of One Identity. "Almost all security breaches can be traced back to identity compromises. Most organizations are still governing it with tools that were built for a different era. AI is accelerating the problem faster than most organizations realize: every agent and every automated workflow are identities that need to be governed. Our customers are dealing with environments that are more distributed and harder to govern than anything legacy frameworks were designed for." Garg says operating as a standalone company "gives us the focus this problem requires and the speed our customers demand." Per the release, more than 80 percent of the One Identity engineering organization is based in Europe, including Chief Technology Officer Gihan Munasinghe and other key leadership roles. The move is therefore a natural step, building on long-standing investment across the United Kingdom, Germany, Ireland, and elsewhere in Europe. One Identity was founded in 2016 when it was separated from cybersecurity company SonicWall in Dell's sale of its software group to private equity firms Francisco Partners and Elliott Management. As part of this transaction, Dell Software also became its own entity, Quest Software, and although One Identity was spun off as an independent brand, it remained part of the Quest family. In 2021, the company acquired OneLogin, a provider of identity and access management software; OneLogin has since become its main product. One Identity recently named Michael Henricks as its new chief financial and operating officer, and Randy Menon as chief product and marketing officer. Article topics. Latest biometrics news. One Identity spins out as independent company, relocates global HQ to Ireland. The identity security vendor said the move will provide greater focus as demand grows for identity governance and AI security technologies published 4 hours ago One Identity has announced plans to become an independent company, with the identity security specialist's Cork office to become its new headquarters. The company previously operated as part of Quest Software, which was acquired by Clearlake Capital in 2021. By going solo, the vendor said it is looking to capitalize on growing demand for identity governance technologies as enterprise environments continue to grow in complexity due to increasing SaaS adoption, stricter regulatory requirements, and the rapid growth of both human and non-human identities. According to the company, operating independently will provide greater focus and investment as it targets opportunities across identity governance and administration (IGA) and privileged access management (PAM) - with the combined market estimated to be worth $10 billion. Accelerating innovation at Bitwarden. published: June 17, 2026 I started Bitwarden with a conviction that security should be more open, more accessible, and more trustworthy. That approach still guides Bitwarden today. The initial goal was straightforward: build a password manager people could trust, verify, and use anywhere. Open source set a foundation for that vision, along with the belief that online security should be available to everyone, regardless of budget, team size, or technical resources. This foundation has carried Bitwarden farther than I could have ever imagined. Today, Bitwarden serves more than 15 million users and 80,000 businesses globally. The product portfolio grew to include secrets management, passkeys, and AI-driven workflows, all supported by a global team and an impassioned community. Bitwarden must continue evolving to lead in online security, while retaining the principles instrumental to its success. This is why the company is expanding leadership and increasing investment in R&D, user experience, and the next generation of Bitwarden products. Expanding leadership for continued growth. As Bitwarden continues to secure users globally at scale, the company sought an engineering leader to build teams and continue developing trusted, high-quality solutions for customers and the user community. That leader is Andrew Hartnett, who is joining Bitwarden as Chief Technology Officer. Andrew joins from One Identity, where he served as Chief Technology Officer and brings deep experience across identity security, engineering leadership, and enterprise software development. In this role, Andrew will lead the technical organization behind Bitwarden, and be part of a broader push to accelerate innovation at Bitwarden with a 50% increase in R&D investment towards user experience initiatives and a broader security portfolio. With this expansion, I am shifting into a new role as Chief Innovation Officer, where I will dedicate more time to exploring, building, and delivering new products and technologies for Bitwarden customers and the wider community. My commitment to Bitwarden and its mission remains unchanged. I will continue to be deeply involved in the future direction of the product portfolio and work closely with company teams to improve Bitwarden products and build new capabilities that keep users secure. Looking ahead. The future of the security industry is already here. Passwords and passkeys remain critical to protecting sensitive information, and passwordless authentication, AI-driven workflows, and new models for identity and access create new challenges around trust, governance, and secure access. These are the problems Bitwarden knows how to solve, and I look forward to delivering for users and customers. That work starts with continuing to improve the products people already rely on every day, from Bitwarden Password Manager and Secrets Manager to Standalone Authenticator and passkeys. It also means expanding the portfolio in ways that make trusted security easier to adopt, easier to use, and more effective across the moments where people and organizations need protection most. Bitwarden has always been more than a password manager to me. It is a commitment to a more secure digital world and to creating security tools in ways that earn trust. I am proud of what this team has built, grateful for the community that continues to push Bitwarden Inc. forward, and I am excited for what comes next. Get started with Bitwarden today.
