Petra

Robotic systems for underground utility installation

Overview

Petra designs and deploys robotic systems that bury and service underground utilities in difficult and disaster-prone geologies to protect critical infrastructure from natural and man-made threats. Its robots install and maintain utilities where traditional methods fail, with options to buy or lease and accompanying service contracts. Led by executives with NASA, Intuitive Surgical, Carbon 3D, and Tesla backgrounds, Petra combines deep robotics expertise with a track record of raising funds and collaborating with universities. The goal is to improve resilience and reliability of essential infrastructure by enabling secure underground installation and maintenance in places once considered impractical.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • $2.2T U.S. water infrastructure gap demands $109B annual undergrounding investment.
  • Thermal spallation cuts costs 30-90% versus conventional trenchless methods.
  • California wildfire mandates drive utility undergrounding in high-risk regions.

What critics are saying

  • Zilper integration fails, delaying products and causing customer churn in 12-24 months.
  • Komatsu replicates thermal spallation, neutralizing moat in 18-36 months.
  • Herrenknecht enters market, compressing pricing 40-60% within 24 months.

What makes Petra unique

  • Petra's thermal spallation drills 60-inch tunnels through hardest rock without contact.
  • Swifty robot enables reverse-tunneling for maintenance and cutter head rescue.
  • 2025 Zilper acquisition covers hard rock to soft sands and high water tables.

Petra Acquires Trenchless Tunneling Company Zilper To Enable Utility Undergrounding Through Any Nightmare Geology

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Petra, the first company capable of undergrounding critical utility infrastructure from difficult hard rock to soft ground geologies, announced the acquisition of Zilper Trenchless, a pioneer in the trenchless technology space. Zilper Trenchless machines uniquely install critical utility infrastructure through nightmare geologies such as flowing sands, cobbles, and high water table environments. The vast majority of the world’s electric, water, and sewer utilities were not designed to withstand the storms, extreme heat, and drought brought on by climate change and rapid population growth. Above-ground power lines have caused thousands of wildfires in drought prone areas and blackouts during hurricanes. In coastal areas, increased flooding and sea level rise cause sewage to leach into waterways. There is a growing demand by municipalities to expand underground utilities, but in many populated areas with hard and soft ground nightmare geologies, conventional technology has difficulty boring through flowing sand, high water table content, and cobbles. According to the Black & Veatch 2022 Water Report, the United States would need to increase its investment in water infrastructure by $2.2 trillion over the next 20 years, or roughly $109 billion per year to close the water industry’s current investment gap
