Planned Parenthood North Central States announces staffing reductions and Iowa care consolidation to preserve access amid escalating attacks. PPNCS release 06/29/26 Saint Paul, MN - Today, Planned Parenthood North Central States (PPNCS) announced staffing reductions impacting 38 employees through layoffs, 12 employees through reassignment offers, and the elimination of 11 open positions through attrition - and the consolidation of its Iowa in-person care into the Planned Parenthood Des Moines - Susan Knapp Health Center, transitioning services from its Iowa City Health Center on July 31, 2026 while the provider continues virtual care statewide. These decisions come as PPNCS faces unrelenting political attacks, growing restrictions on care, and an unsustainable rise in uncompensated and undercompensated care - now expected to reach $7 million in fiscal year '26. "We are in the hardest moment for the reproductive freedom movement in modern day history," said Ruth Richardson, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood North Central States. "By protecting our core infrastructure now, we will be ready to expand care again when the pendulum shifts - because it will. After seeing the resilience of our patients, communities, supporters, champions, and our staff and providers, I believe we have what it takes to sustain our strength and build back." Video PPNCS has spent years working to absorb the growing demand for care amid declining and unstable funding streams. Federal and hostile state actions have intensified pressure on the organization, including a Trump administration attack last week that defunded the organization from the Teen Pregnancy Prevention program for a second time, growing threats to Title X funding, and threats to extend the prohibition of Medicaid patients using their insurance to cover care at Planned Parenthood - a provision that was passed as part of HR1 that is expected to expire on July 4. At the same time, the cost of providing care continues to rise while reimbursement rates fail to keep pace. Title X reimbursement covers only 41% of the cost of care delivered, and more patients are turning to Planned Parenthood without insurance or the ability to pay, further increasing uncompensated care. These dynamics are compounded by state-level restrictions across the region. In Iowa, a near-total abortion ban has fundamentally reshaped how patients access care, contributing to an 80% decrease in Iowans accessing abortion services in-state and significant increases in travel to neighboring states. In response, PPNCS is restructuring to protect its core services while adapting how care is delivered. The organization will continue to provide care through 14 health centers across the region and virtual care available seven days a week. Patients in Iowa will continue to access in-person services in Des Moines and virtual care statewide. "Every patient we continue to serve, every door we keep open, and every service we sustain matters. Today, we are making the difficult - but disciplined - decisions necessary to preserve our mission," Richardson added. Video These changes also reflect a significant shift in how PPNCS delivers community education. Due to funding cuts and ongoing attacks on education programs, the organization has made the difficult decision to significantly reduce its community education and engagement staffing, while maintaining patient-based education within health centers and continuing select targeted education efforts in new ways. Despite these challenges, PPNCS emphasized its ongoing commitment to patients and communities across its five-state region. Planned Parenthood health centers will continue to provide a wide range of reproductive and sexual health services includes cervical and breast cancer screenings, contraception care, sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing and treatment, HIV testing, PrEP and PEP, immunizations, pregnancy testing, menopausal care, emergency contraception, healthcare for trans people including hormone management, and abortion information and options. "We are not the cause of these conditions - but we are responsible for how we respond," Richardson said. "We will continue to adapt, continue to serve, and continue to fight to ensure that people can get the care they need, no matter what." Video
Planned Parenthood to reopen health centers, resume telehealth in Louisiana. WWNO - New Orleans Public Radio | By Mel Bridges Published June 26, 2026 at 9:18 AM CDT Planned Parenthood announced plans to reopen a health center and expand telehealth in Louisiana Wednesday (June 24). The nonprofit health care organization's two health centers in the state shut down in September due to what Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast CEO Melaney Linton called "relentless political assaults." But in a statement, Planned Parenthood Great Plains says it plans to restart in-person care in New Orleans this fall. Telehealth is expected to start later this summer. "Louisiana has significant health disparities when it comes to access to providers, and there are historically under-resourced investments in public health infrastructure in the state," Planned Parenthood Great Plains president and CEO Emily Wales said in an interview with WWNO. "It's not unlike what Wrkf 89.3 Fm has seen in its other states, where you have politicians who are prioritizing other things - or certainly political gains - over investing in their constituents accessing healthcare. "So to the extent we know patients don't have a big enough safety net, [or] there aren't enough providers who want to do sexual and reproductive care, especially when there are low reimbursement rates from insurers or from Medicaid. We know there are often not enough providers who do this work, and that's why we want to offer those critical services." Services at the New Orleans location will include contraception, STI testing and treatment, gender-affirming care, pregnancy testing, perimenopause and menopause care, vasectomies, cancer screenings and other preventive health services. Wales said for many at Planned Parenthood Great Plains, being able to reopen in Louisiana hits close to home - literally. "I think for our team, especially our staff members in Arkansas, this feels really personal," she said. "Getting to expand and support communities in Louisiana is not hypothetical or remote. Wrkf 89.3 Fm already see patients from Louisiana who've been forced across state lines to access abortion care, in particular, who are coming to states like Kansas and now Missouri as it's working to restore care. "For our staff members who live in a state with a total abortion ban or who know what it is to have government interfere directly with their care, getting to be part of a network where we see patients, we support them and we reassure them that your healthcare decisions are your own, and we just want you to be healthy and safe, that's really meaningful." Louisiana has a total abortion ban, and Planned Parenthood was never licensed to perform abortions in the state. However, it did help patients access out-of-state abortion care. Wales is still anticipating the same political pushback that caused Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast to close. "I'm realistic that there are likely to be some headwinds, and also that Planned Parenthood patients have been a political target as people think about running for office or think about maybe what speaks to a base of anti-abortion supporters," she said. "That's not your everyday Louisiana individual. People want access to care. They want to have care that is confidential, that is high quality and provided with dignity, and that's exactly what we do." In response to the announcement, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill emphasized in a statement that abortions remain illegal in Louisiana, "including any attempt by activists to facilitate the trafficking of dangerous and illegal pills through the mail or via 'telehealth.'"
Judge deals Planned Parenthood major loss. By Leif Le Mahieu NEWS 29 May 2026 Florida is accusing Planned Parenthood of lying about its services. (Daily Wire) A Florida judge shut down Planned Parenthood's attempt to dismiss a lawsuit accusing the abortion giant of false advertising over claims that the abortion pill is safer than Tylenol and Viagra. Florida First Circuit Court Judge J. Scott Duncan ruled Monday against Planned Parenthood's motion to dismiss the lawsuit, which Attorney General James Uthmeier filed in November 2025. The suit accuses Planned Parenthood of violating Florida's Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act by misleading consumers about the safety of the abortion drug mifepristone. Uthmeier is seeking up to $350 million in penalties. "The Defendants did not simply claim the abortion-inducing medications were safe; rather, according to the Complaint, they claimed they were safer than other medications," Judge Duncan wrote. "In making a comparison, the Defendants went beyond vague promotional language," the judge added. "Now whether these statements are actionable or non-actionable may depend on the context in which they were made." The lawsuit centers on a statement on Planned Parenthood's website claiming abortion pills are "safer than many other medicines like penicillin, Tylenol, and Viagra." Planned Parenthood argued that the statements amounted to legally protected promotional language and could not be treated as false advertising. Uthmeier's office praised the ruling. "We thank our team of litigators who argued against Planned Parenthood's meritless attempt to dismiss our case against them," Jeremy Redfern, Uthmeier's deputy chief of staff, told The Daily Wire. "This decision brings us one step closer to holding Planned Parenthood accountable for profiting from abortions by lying to women about abortion pills being safer than Tylenol." Mifepristone cuts off the nutrients that an unborn child needs to survive in the womb. A second drug is then taken to expel the deceased baby from the mother. The lawsuit seeks a $10,000 penalty for every chemical abortion performed in Florida under the alleged deceptive safety claims. Florida estimated that the total could be roughly $350 million based on approximately 35,000 abortions. "Tylenol is an over-the-counter pain medicine that everyone understands, intuitively and by experience, to be safe," the lawsuit said. "Chemical abortion, by contrast, uses mifepristone and misoprostol and is far more dangerous. Use of chemical abortion drugs routinely lands women in the emergency room with hemorrhaging and other serious complications." The Food and Drug Administration says it is currently reviewing the safety of mifepristone. Pro-life advocates and several GOP attorneys general have urged the Trump administration to reverse Biden-era regulations allowing the drug to be prescribed without an in-person doctor's visit. Planned Parenthood reopens abortion Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. State Bud Shaver | Apr 9, 2026 | 5:07PM | Albuquerque, New Mexico Abortion Free New Mexico (AFNM) is raising concerns following the re-opening of a Planned Parenthood facility in Northeast Albuquerque, which is now providing in-person medical abortions at 9809 Candelaria Rd NE. According to their website, the location is identified as "Northeast Heights Health Center of Albuquerque, NM" and is currently open. At the same address, mapping data and prior listings indicate this site was previously associated with Care Net Pregnancy Center of Albuquerque, a pro-life ministry serving women and families. AFNM says this development reflects a broader shift in New Mexico, where abortion access has expanded rapidly in recent years. REACH PRO-LIFE PEOPLE WORLDWIDE! Advertise with LifeNews to reach hundreds of thousands of pro-life readers every week. Contact Lifenews today. Rapid expansion since Roe v. Wade overturn. In 2022, when Roe v. Wade was overturned: * Albuquerque had 4 abortion facilities * The state had approximately 9 total * Albuquerque now has 7 abortion facilities * New Mexico has 14 free-standing abortion facilities statewide * Additional mail-order abortion pill services are offered remotely through The Satanic Temple. AFNM notes that: * A taxpayer-funded abortion facility is already under construction in Las Cruces, supported by approximately $10 million in state funding approved by the New Mexico Legislature and backed by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham. State leaders have also advanced plans for a second publicly funded facility in Northern New Mexico - with an additional $10 million requested and Farmington identified among the potential locations - though final approval and construction details remain limited. Tara Shaver, spokeswoman for Abortion Free New Mexico issued the following statement: "Since Roe v. Wade was overturned, New Mexico has rapidly positioned itself as a regional destination for abortion, with out-of-state demand driving significant growth in abortion access across our state," Shaver said. "This isn't happening in a vacuum - it is being actively shaped and accelerated by state leadership. While other states are strengthening protections for life, New Mexico's leaders are spearheading a dramatic expansion of abortion infrastructure, including the use of taxpayer dollars." "We are witnessing the normalization of abortion tourism in New Mexico, with policy decisions and public funding working together to turn our state into a hub for abortion access in the region." Oversight and transparency questions remain. Abortion Free New Mexico continues to raise concerns about: * Lack of routine health inspections for abortion facilities * Absence of a specific licensing category for abortion clinics * Limited public reporting on complications and outcomes "If abortion is healthcare, why is it exempt from the same standards applied to other medical facilities?" Shaver added.
LGBTQ+ Health organization convene California state health agencies for TGI community listening session. LOS ANGELES, CA - On March 20, the California LGBTQ Health and Human Services Network, along with TransFamily Support Services, the Trans Latin@ Coalition, and Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California, convened a listening session for key California health agencies to elevate the urgent needs and lived experiences of transgender, gender-diverse, and intersex (TGI) community members seeking gender-affirming care. Representatives from the Department of Health Care Services, the Department of Managed Health Care, California Health and Human Services, and the California Department of Public Health joined the discussion to hear directly from advocates and community members about the growing barriers to accessing care. While gender-affirming care remains protected under California law, ongoing federal actions - including proposed rules from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and executive orders - have created a chilling effect across the healthcare system. Providers and institutions are making preemptive decisions to scale back or discontinue services out of fear and uncertainty. These decisions are already impacting access. The closure of vital services and gender-affirming care clinics at hospitals is a huge concern. Yet many of the most harmful consequences remain less visible - delays in care, inconsistent guidance and communication between providers and pharmacies, and increased difficulty navigating already complex systems. At the same time, harmful misinformation and escalating anti-trans rhetoric are contributing to a broader cultural shift that threatens the safety and well-being of TGI individuals - even in progressive states like California. This climate of fear and stigma disproportionately impacts young people and those already facing systemic barriers to care. "It pains me to see this generation facing many of the same struggles I experienced growing up," stated Dannie Cesena, Director of the CA LGBTQ HHS Network. "We have fought hard to advance and protect these rights, and now we are being called to defend them once again. I'm grateful to our state partners for coming to the table so we can work collectively on concrete strategies to ensure equitable access to care for all." During the session, community members shared firsthand accounts of being failed by the healthcare system - from prescription delays and denials at pharmacies to a lack of coordination between providers - forcing many to navigate life-saving care on their own. At a time when TGI individuals are already experiencing heightened levels of discrimination, stigma, and targeted political attacks, these barriers can have devastating consequences. Everyone's health benefits when the health and rights of Transgender, Gender-diverse, and intersex individuals are respected, treated equitably, and prioritized. Ensuring access to gender-affirming care is not a political issue. Health care is a human right. "Our state health departments heard barely a fraction of the challenges TGI families and youth are navigating every day," stated Kathie Moehlig of TransFamily Support Services. "These agencies have the power and responsibility to uphold California law. We look forward to continuing this work together and developing solutions that meet the urgency of this moment." The organizations plan to host a follow-up discussion with state partners to identify actionable strategies and strengthen accountability in addressing these barriers. The California LGBTQ+ Health & Human Services Network advances and protects the health of 2SLGBTQ+ Californians by mobilizing a statewide coalition of community organizations, providers, researchers, and advocates to shape equitable public policy, strengthen implementation, and drive community-centered systems change.
