Protocol Behavioral Health

Protocol Behavioral Health

Oncology-focused behavioral health support platform

Overview

Protocol Behavioral Health delivers oncology-focused mental health care by partnering with oncology clinics and cancer centers to integrate behavioral health services into cancer care. Their product works through collaborations with medical practices to provide mental health support to cancer patients, enabling appropriate screening, referral, and therapy within the oncology setting (in-clinic or telehealth as needed), coordinated with the oncology team. The company differentiates itself by specializing in cancer-related behavioral health and embedding services directly into oncology workflows, improving care coordination and practice efficiency compared to generic mental health providers. The goal is to improve patient outcomes and experience while helping clinics run more efficiently by offering targeted mental health support tailored to cancer patients.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • July 2026 leadership adds Ryan Powers, sharpening finance discipline for national expansion.
  • Protocol expanded from five states in February to seven by July 2026, with Midwest entry.
  • Affiliated Oncologists partnership in Illinois opens 45 providers and Chicagoland patient flow.

What critics are saying

  • Protocol relies on CoCM reimbursement; payer denials or coding changes break unit economics fast.
  • Large behavioral-health and oncology-tech players can copy clinic embedding before Protocol builds defensibility.
  • If referral volumes stall, Juxtapose funding runs out before seven-state expansion becomes durable.

What makes Protocol Behavioral Health unique

  • January 2026 NCCN guidelines named Protocol’s CoCM model standard for oncology distress management.
  • Protocol embeds psycho-oncology clinicians inside cancer clinics, with 48-hour referrals and insurer reimbursement.
  • Juxtapose-backed company targets oncology-specific mental health, not general teletherapy or outsourced EAP care.

Protocol Behavioral Health expands to Midwest with Affiliated Oncologists partnership

Protocol Behavioral Health has expanded into Illinois through a partnership with Affiliated Oncologists, bringing oncology-specific behavioural health services to cancer patients across the greater Chicago area. This marks Protocol's entry into the Midwest market. More than half of cancer patients experience anxiety, depression or trauma during treatment, yet fewer than 10% receive behavioural health support. Protocol's model integrates licensed clinicians trained in psycho-oncology into oncology practices, with patients reached within 48 hours of referral. The partnership uses the Collaborative Care Model, which the NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines recognised in January 2026 as standard of care for distress management in oncology. Affiliated Oncologists operates 45 medical providers across the South Chicago region. Protocol plans additional Midwest market launches this summer.

Protocol Behavioral Health launches to integrate mental health care into US cancer treatment

Protocol Behavioral Health has launched to provide integrated, oncology-specific mental health care directly within cancer clinics nationwide. The company partners with oncologists to deliver evidence-based behavioural health support coordinated with cancer treatment. More than 50% of cancer patients experience anxiety, depression or trauma during treatment, yet fewer than 10% receive behavioural health support. Protocol addresses this gap by embedding oncology-trained mental health specialists into care teams, with patients seen within 48 hours of referral. Founded by Jack Fitzgibbons, clinical psychologist Dr Cara Bohon, and Mark Ahern, Protocol currently operates with oncology practices across five US states. The company's model aligns with insurance reimbursement, allowing most patients to use existing coverage. Protocol is backed by Juxtapose.
