Hamad International Airport rolls out biometric travel across more than 700 touchpoints. HIA and Qatar Airways, together with technology partner SITA, have launched Fast Pass, one of the largest biometric passenger rollouts of its kind both in the Middle East and globally, connecting more than 700 touchpoints into a single, trusted biometric journey. Powered by SITA technology, passengers enrol in Fast Pass once via the Qatar Airways mobile check-in application or at a self-service kiosk in the terminal. It takes just a few seconds and once completed, their face becomes their boarding pass all the way to aircraft boarding. The SITA self-service bag-drop units carry out the same facial verification, and it all runs on infrastructure built for high standard of security and data protection, keeping passengers in control of their identity. In the near future, Qatar Airways transfer passengers will also be able to use Fast Pass, as well as other interested airlines operating from HIA, thereby supporting smoother connections between flights. Taking part is a choice, and staff are on hand for anyone who prefers standard processing. A Fast Pass spokesperson said: "Passengers are ready for something different, as airports everywhere are handling more passengers than ever. IATA research shows that most now prefer biometric identification over physical documents. Verifying a passenger once and recognising them at each touchpoint allows airports to meet rising demand without longer queues. Aviation is at a turning point, and a rollout at this scale shows what the next standard for passenger processing can look like. For passengers, departure feels different. Drop your bag with a glance at the camera. Walk through security without reaching for documents. Board with a look, not a search through your bag for documents. Each step that used to mean stopping now takes just a moment." With a major emphasis on mobile, HIA plans to extend the service across more touchpoints over time including enrolment and verification beyond the airport itself. Selim Bouri, SITA's President, Middle East, Africa & Türkiye, said: "The way people move through airports is changing, and trusted digital identity is at the centre of it. When a passenger is verified once and recognised across the whole journey, the airport runs more smoothly and the traveller stays in control of their data. Hamad International Airport has shown what that looks like at full scale, across every major touchpoint. This is the model the industry will build on: travel that is faster and simpler because it is built on trust."
Hamad International Airport rolls out biometric travel across more than 700 touchpoints, one of the largest rollouts of its kind globally. News releases Location: Geneva | 06 Jul, 2026 Passengers flying out of Hamad International Airport (HIA) can now check in, drop their bags, clear security and board using their face instead of a boarding pass. Hamad International Airport rolls out biometric travel across more than 700 touchpoints, one of the largest rollouts of its kind globally. 06 July 2026 Hamad International Airport (HIA) and Qatar Airways have jointly implemented and now launched the Fast Pass solution, a new biometric service designed to support a more paperless departure journey with technology partner SITA. Using facial recognition, the Fast Pass service enables passengers to move through key airport checkpoints with fewer document checks. The service is one of the largest biometric passenger rollouts of its kind in the Middle East and globally, connecting more than 700 touchpoints into a single trusted journey, with security and data protection built into every step. Fast Pass registration is available at self-service check-in kiosks at the airport and via the Qatar Airways mobile App. Departing passengers can then move through dedicated biometric-enabled touchpoints at check-in, bag drop, security, and boarding, using their face as their boarding pass. The process takes only seconds, reducing document checks and wait times, particularly during busy periods. Participation is optional, with standard processing still available and staff on ground to assist. Demand for biometric travel is growing globally. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), most passengers now prefer biometric identification over physical documents. As part of HIA's broader Innovation Roadmap, Fast Pass brings HIA in line with this shift, offering a more efficient way to navigate the airport. A rollout of this scale shows what the standard for paperless passenger processing can look like. Fast Pass will continue to expand across additional touchpoints, by working with technology partners to progressively enhance the overall journey with the capability being available in the near future to other interested airlines operating from HIA.
