Shiru discovers and develops plant-based proteins for the food and beverage industry using biotechnology and data science. It identifies proteins with desirable nutrition and functional properties and produces them to replace traditional animal-derived ingredients. The company partners with food manufacturers to integrate its proprietary proteins into product lines through licensing and sales agreements, earning revenue from licenses and ingredient supply. Shiru differentiates itself by combining protein discovery with a data-driven approach and a collaborative licensing model, rather than simply selling ingredients. Its goal is to help create sustainable, healthier, and better-functioning food and beverage products by expanding the range of high-quality plant-based proteins available to brands.

Ingredion Inc., Shiru ink partnership. 04.06.2026 WESTCHESTER, ILL. - Shiru and Ingredion Inc. are developing prebiotics derived from perceived-as-natural sources to promote healthier microbiomes, according to the companies. Under the new partnership, the companies will create a research and development program that will be powered by Berkeley, Calif.-based Shiru's artificial intelligence discovery platform. "As consumer expectations rise, food companies need new ways to move faster and innovate smarter," said Michael Leonard, chief innovation officer at Ingredion. "Shiru helps us discover better natural ingredients more quickly so we can help our customers deliver new products at a pace the market expects." Within Shiru's platform, the company houses more than 77 million perceived-as-natural functional protein ingredient sequences that are catalogued and analyzed, according to Shiru. "We have broken the mold on how ingredient discovery is done," said Jasmin Hume, PhD, founder and chief executive officer of Shiru. "Disrupting the speed at which we can identify high-performance natural proteins has opened the floodgates for healthy, targeted nutrition. "What once took a team of 50 scientists a decade and a healthy dose of serendipity, we can now do strategically and efficiently in months. Pairing that capability with Ingredion's scale and customer relationships creates a direct path from discovery to market." Ingredion is just one of the many companies to partner with Shiru. GreenLab partnered with Shiru to commercialize food proteins using Greenlab's Corn expression system; Ajinomoto Health & Nutrition tapped Shiru to develop and commercialize sweet proteins for beverages and specialty products; Puratos Group and Shiru worked together to evaluate and develop a next-generation egg replacement; and CP Kelco partnered with Shiru to develop plant-based proteins using precision fermentation technology. Ingredion has entered a global R&D collaboration with US-based ingredient discovery company Shiru to accelerate the development and commercialisation of novel functional proteins. The partnership will combine Ingredion's formulation expertise and global customer network with Shiru's proprietary AI platform, which analyses more than 77 million natural protein sequences to identify ingredients with targeted functional benefits. The companies will focus on developing next-generation prebiotics derived from natural sources, targeting improved gut microbiome health. The move comes as demand grows for clinically supported, scalable ingredients linked to immunity, metabolic health and cognitive function. Ingredients developed through the partnership will be commercialised via Ingredion's network of more than 18,000 customers across 120 countries. The agreement builds on Shiru's recent launch of AI-discovered ingredients uPro and OleoPro, and aligns with Ingredion's strategy to expand its Texture & Healthful Solutions portfolio through external innovation. Jasmin Hume, founder and CEO of Shiru, said: "We have broken the mold on how ingredient discovery is done. Disrupting the speed at which we can identify high-performance natural proteins has opened the floodgates for healthy, targeted nutrition." Shiru has announced a global R&D collaboration with Ingredion to accelerate AI-enabled discovery of functional proteins and prebiotics for food, beverages and specialised nutrition. The partnership connects Shiru's database of over 77 million natural protein sequences with Ingredion's Texture & Healthful Solutions platform, providing access to Ingredion's 18,000 customers across 120 countries. The collaboration supports Ingredion's strategic shift towards higher-value, health-focused ingredients as the company faces a 3.1% annual sales decline and free cash flow margin pressure. The deal follows Ingredion's February 2025 partnership with Oobli on sweet proteins, reflecting its strategy of using external partnerships to expand its speciality portfolio. However, the collaboration does not address near-term pressures in legacy categories like industrial starches and high fructose corn syrup, which remain key risks for shareholders.
Ingredion and Shiru announce partnership to accelerate ai-powered functional protein discovery. * 1 hr ago BERKELEY, Calif. and WESTCHESTER, Ill., March 18, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) - Shiru, named a TIME Best Invention of 2024 for its AI-powered approach to ingredient discovery, and Ingredion Inc. (NYSE: INGR), a leading global ingredient solutions provider, today announced a global R&D collaboration aimed at accelerating the discovery and commercialization of novel functional proteins for food, beverage, supplements and specialized nutrition. Ingredion and Shiru will engage in the joint pursuit of a targeted R&D program enabled by Shiru's proprietary AI discovery platform - the industry's broadest searchable database of functional protein ingredients, with more than 77 million natural protein sequences catalogued and analyzed. "We have broken the mold on how ingredient discovery is done," said Dr. Jasmin Hume, founder and CEO of Shiru. "Disrupting the speed at which we can identify high-performance natural proteins has opened the floodgates for healthy, targeted nutrition. What once took a team of 50 scientists a decade and a healthy dose of serendipity, we can now do strategically and efficiently in months. Pairing that capability with Ingredion's scale and customer relationships creates a direct path from discovery to market." The collaboration will focus on the development of next-generation prebiotics derived from natural sources to promote healthier microbiomes, an area where AI-driven protein discovery is creating new possibilities that conventional R&D cannot easily access. As the evidence linking gut microbiome health to immunity, metabolic function and cognitive performance expands, CPG companies face increasing pressure to reformulate with ingredients that are both clinically credible and manufacturable at scale. This strategic partnership is directly focused on meeting that demand. Ingredients developed through the joint research will have a path to Ingredion's 18,000+ customers across 120 countries. "As consumer expectations rise, food companies need new ways to move faster and innovate smarter," said Michael Leonard, chief innovation officer at Ingredion. "Shiru helps us discover better natural ingredients more quickly so we can help our customers deliver new products at a pace the market expects." The partnership follows Shiru's commercial launch of uPro(TM) and OleoPro(TM)(two AI-discovered natural ingredients now on the market for use in food and personal care) and builds on Ingredion's strategic push to expand its Texture & Healthful Solutions portfolio through external innovation.
