Spring Health has expanded VERA-MH, the first open-source AI safety benchmark for mental health, to include a harm-from-others safety area. The new rubric evaluates how AI systems respond when adults describe being at risk of physical or sexual violence. Developed with clinicians, interpersonal violence experts, and people with lived experience, the benchmark is scored across five areas: detecting risk, confirming it, guiding users to human care, supportive conversation, and following AI boundaries. It draws on 100 realistic personas. VERA-MH was launched in October 2025 in collaboration with the AI in Mental Health Safety and Ethics Council. OpenAI's recently published MentalHealthBench paper cites VERA-MH's suicidal ideation rubric as one of few frameworks built specifically to assess safe AI responses to risk. Public feedback on the harm-from-others rubric is open for 60 days ahead of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
