Stormont Vail breaks ground on $35 million Emporia campus. Stormont Vail Health officials, community leaders and residents gathered Friday to celebrate the start of construction on a new healthcare campus in Emporia, marking what officials described as a long-term investment in local and regional healthcare access. Nearly 200 people attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the approximately $35 million facility, which will be built near the intersection of 18th Avenue and Road G and is expected to open in 2028. A mix of community leaders, community members, and Stormont Vail staff visited before the ceremony, sharing their excitement for the pivotal moment. Stormont Vail President and CEO Mark Slyter said the project represents more than a construction effort. "Today is about more than construction. Today is about commitment - to Emporia, to this region and to the future of high-quality care right here at home," Slyter said at the ceremony. "Stormont Vail has been a part of this community for more than 30 years - serving patients, building relationships, collaborating and earning trust one visit at a time". Slyter said Stormont Vail's relationship with Emporia dates back decades and has continued to evolve as healthcare needs have changed. Additionally, he acknowledged the dedication of Stormont Vail doctors and nurses, many of whom are Emporia natives. "We've been here providing primary care for generations of families, expanding specialty access, supporting patients with safe, high-quality, reliable care," Slyter said. "Today, we're building a campus that brings all of these services together in a way that better serves this community". The facility will centralize a range of services under one roof, including behavioral health, cardiology, endocrinology, immunology and allergy, orthopedics, occupational health, imaging and laboratory services. Slyter also said the campus will create opportunities for additional specialties in the future, including dermatology and weight management. "This building and this opportunity will give us more ability to bring those here local," he said. Emporia Clinic Medical Director Scott Smiley said healthcare access remains an important part of maintaining a strong community. "Emporia is a strong community built by strong people, and access to healthcare is a critical part of that strength," Smiley said. "When people can see a trusted provider, access specialty care close to home and receive coordinated care, it makes a difference in the health and life of the patient and the community". Smiley, who came to Emporia in 2003, said his ties to the community extend beyond his work as a physician. "This is where I call home," Smiley said. "We were welcomed warmly into the community and over decades have made Emporia our home". Emporia Clinic Director Kelsey Meyer, who joined the team earlier this year and is also an Emporia native, said the project was designed with local families in mind. "As someone who's lucky to call Lyon County home, this moment is incredibly special for me," Meyer said. "I'm an Emporia native, and I'm proud to serve this community that has truly shaped me". Meyer said the goal extends beyond medical services. "As a nurse, I know that healing doesn't come just from treatment. It comes from how a place feels," Meyer said. "This campus was designed to feel like Emporia - to be welcoming, to be connected and to be built for this community". Meyer thanked her team for their support and the important work they do each day serving patients with care and compassion. Just moments before, the gathered crowd witnessed the quick response of Stormont Vail staff as they jumped into action when an attendee experienced a medical emergency. They quickly assisted the man and provided medical care until an ambulance arrived. Officials said the project reflects years of planning and collaboration and is intended to support both current and future healthcare needs in the region. Slyter noted the investment is privately funded and designed to improve access to care close to home. No taxpayer dollars will be used. "A $35 million investment in this community into Emporia to provide access to the most advanced ambulatory healthcare experience close to home," he said
Dirt work ongoing at site of new Stormont Vail Emporia clinic. Emporia, KS, USA / KVOE Apr 12, 2026 | 11:55 AM Stormont Vail Health hasn't mentioned an official groundbreaking date yet for its new Emporia clinic, but it has been targeting this spring - and there has been a lot of earthwork already done on site as the process moves towards a tentative groundbreaking activity next month. The clinic, getting built near the southeast corner of West 18th and Road G or Americus Road, already has several levels of dirt relatively smoothed out for the upcoming construction, which follows nearly two years of zoning processes as Stormont Vail exits its Cotton O'Neil Clinic space at Newman Regional Health. The nearly $45 million facility should open to the public in 2028. It will offer several levels of primary care, including family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics and behavioral health. It will also offer several types of specialty care, including immunology, allergy, cardiology, endocrinology, occupational health and orthopedics. Imaging and lab services will also be included.
