Teal Health

At-home HPV self-collection cervical screening

Overview

Teal Health provides at-home cervical cancer screening using the Teal Wand, the first FDA-authorized self-collection HPV kit that does not require a speculum or clinic visit. The process pairs a telehealth consult with a mailed self-collection kit, certified lab processing, secure results, and follow-up care coordination. It stands out by having FDA authorization for at-home self-collection without a clinician visit, supported by data showing accuracy comparable to clinician-collected samples and strong patient preference, along with partnerships with health systems, employers, and payors. The goal is to expand payor, health-system, and direct-purchase channels ahead of broad insurance coverage for self-collection in 2027 to reach more women.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Teal raised $22 million in September 2026, bringing total funding to $45 million.
  • Teal already works with Aetna, Anthem, Cigna, BlueCross BlueShield, and UnitedHealthcare.
  • UC Davis and WashU pilots expand clinical validation and employer-health-system distribution.

What critics are saying

  • January 2027 coverage hinges on federal rules; any implementation delay hurts conversion.
  • $99 insured pricing still competes with entrenched Pap workflows and low-adherence consumers.
  • A larger diagnostics company can bundle HPV testing faster and squeeze Teal's margins.

What makes Teal Health unique

  • Teal Wand is the only FDA-authorized at-home cervical cancer screening device today.
  • UC Davis Health pilot integrates Teal into Epic and HL7 workflows.
  • ACS and HHS recognition makes Teal the standard-bearer for self-collection.

Teal Health partners with UC Davis on at-home cervical cancer screening pilot

Teal Health has partnered with UC Davis Health on a pilot study to integrate at-home cervical cancer screening into routine healthcare. The programme, funded through Teal Health's NIH SBIR grant, will offer women aged 30-65 who are due or overdue for screening access to Teal's FDA-authorised self-collection device. Participants will receive outreach through MyChart, email, text, or care teams, directing them to complete an eligibility screening before receiving a home testing kit. Completed kits will be processed through UC Davis's in-house laboratory, with results integrated directly into the health system's electronic health record through Epic and HL7 workflows. The pilot aims to evaluate screening completion rates, patient engagement, and operational feasibility, establishing a scalable model for broader health system adoption of at-home cervical cancer screening.

FDA authorises first at-home cervical cancer screening kit after 80 years of clinic-only tests

Teal Health has developed the Teal Wand, the first FDA-authorised at-home cervical cancer screening device in the United States. The soft-sponge vaginal self-collection device allows women to collect samples at home and mail them to a lab, where they are processed using the same Roche cobas HPV test used in clinical settings, with 95% accuracy. Co-founded in 2020 by Kara Egan and Dr Avnesh Thakor, Teal Health addresses a critical gap: whilst cervical cancer is nearly 100% preventable, roughly 13,000 American women will be diagnosed this year because one in three are not up to date on screening. Almost half of Teal's users were behind on screening, and nearly 20% had never been screened despite being within screening age. The company spent four years developing the device with IDEO, focusing on patient experience rather than clinical efficiency.

Teal Health raises $23M for at-home test

Teal Health's at-home cervical cancer screening test, the Teal Wand, received FDA approval. The device, resembling a tampon, matches the accuracy of traditional tests and is covered by major insurers. Teal Health raised $23 million from Serena Ventures, Metrodora, and Labcorp. The test addresses access, convenience, and discomfort issues, encouraging more women to stay current with screenings. In trials, 94% preferred it over in-office tests, and 86% would screen more regularly at home.
