Introducing a new way to fund forest restoration. August 3, 2026 Amanda Rousseau Growth Lead More people can now take part in restoring native forests on Hawai[[ʻ]]i Island through its sliding-scale Tree Subscription. On Hawai[[ʻ]]i Island, Terraformation seed collectors spend weeks each year gathering seed from ʻŌhi[[ʻ]]a lehua, koa, wiliwili, and other native species. They have to time it carefully, since native seed is only viable for collection during certain windows, and a missed season means waiting another year. Once collected, that seed is stored in a seed bank and grown in a nursery for six to eighteen months. During this process, the seedling is watered, monitored, then slowly hardened off, exposed bit by bit to sun, wind, and drier conditions, until it's resilient enough to survive outside a nursery's care. Some species, like ʻōhi[[ʻ]]a lehua, require the full eighteen months because they're among Hawai[[ʻ]]i's most important endemic trees, helping protect the high-elevation watersheds that sustain both native ecosystems and local communities. Planting itself is timed to the rainy season, which shifts with the weather each year, so the exact planting date isn't set by a calendar so much as by what the clouds are doing. Skip any one of those steps and the sapling has a lower chance of making it. That's the real cost of a tree: not the planting, but everything that has to happen before and after it, most of which a supporter never sees. That reality also shaped how Terraformation fund restoration. Today, Terraformation is introducing new Tree Subscription pricing that lets more people take part in supporting that work. For decades, funding the full restoration process has depended on governments, philanthropists, and corporate investment. Those partnerships remain eseential but they're not moving fast enough on their own. The United Nations Environment Programme estimates that restoration finance needs to grow from $64 billion to nearly $300 billion by 2030. That gap won't be closed by a handful of larger checks. It will take a much larger number of people deciding to be part of the solution, even in small ways. Terraformation believe individuals can help close that gap at the level they can afford. Not by replacing large-scale investment, but by supporting alongside it. Together, those individual contributions can help make restoration possible at a much larger scale. Why Terraformation built a sliding scale. Everyone has a different capacity to give. Someone just starting their career might have five dollars a month to spare. Someone further along might have fifty, or more. Both of those contributions matter, and a subscription program that only works at one price point leaves most of those people out. So instead of asking "what's the right price for a subscription," we asked "how do we let more people take part in restoration, at whatever level they can." Growing and planting a single tree on the Big Island, covering seed collection, nursery time, hardening off, planting, and years of follow-up monitoring, is a long-term investment. Terraformation don't want cost to be a barrier for participation. And that's why Terraformation is now offering a full range of monthly tiers: $5, $10, $25, $40, or $50 a month, or the same support paid up-front through an annual plan. At the $25 tier and above, a subscriber is funding a fully resourced tree each month (or multiple), from seed to established forest. If your monthly amount sponsors less than or more than a single $25 tree, you earn digital "seeds" that accumulate month over month until they add up to the cost of a full tree. A $5, $10, or $40/month subscriber still ends up funding real, individual trees, just on a different timeline than someone giving $25 each month. Whether that takes one month or several, every tree which eventually gets funded receives the same years of care as any other. What staying connected looks like. Restoration takes decades, and it's easy to lose track of anything that takes that long. Terraformation built the subscription around staying connected to that timeline rather than around a single transaction. Subscribers get a monthly email update on their trees' and the project's progress, so the process doesn't disappear between the moment they sign up and some distant future report. They also get a dashboard they can log into anytime to check status, from seed to nursery to planted seedling to established forest, so the information isn't limited to whatever shows up in an inbox once a month. Later this year, Terraformation is launching a new app that will let subscribers discover and follow additional restoration projects beyond their first one, so the relationship can grow alongside a person's capacity to give. Terraformation want restoration to become something people can check in on, ask questions about, and watch unfold, almost in real time, as it actually happens on the ground. Join the movement. Every subscriber is one part of a much larger recovery, the same way one species is only ever one part of a healthy forest. No single contribution restores a forest on its own. But when thousands of people each choose to fund what they can, on the timeline that works for them, those individual choices add up to landscape-scale change. Choose the monthly amount that works for you, and become part of restoring native forest on the Big Island of Hawai[[ʻ]]i. Stay connected. Want to keep up with what Terraformation is learning, building, and exploring? Amanda Rousseau Growth Lead Amanda Rousseau is the Growth Lead at Terraformation, where she helps connect more people with native forest restoration through the company's Tree Subscription program. She writes about reforestation, conservation, and the people, science, and long-term stewardship behind restoring forests at scale.
Sembrando Futuro 2.0, a native species restoration project in Colombia led by Grupo Argos Foundation and Terraformation, received one of the highest ratings from independent firm Sylvera. 29 April 2026 * Sembrando Futuro 2.0 received an "A" rating from Sylvera, an independent firm specializing in carbon project analysis, which highlighted its strength in carbon accounting, additionality, and social and environmental benefits. * The project, developed by Grupo Argos Foundation and Terraformation, seeks to restore more than 2,000 hectares of degraded forests in Antioquia, Caldas, Risaralda, Córdoba, and Chocó by planting more than 2.3 million trees from 70 native species. * The initiative is in the final stages of certification under Verra's VM0047 V1.1 methodology, one of the leading international standards in the carbon market. * In addition to its climate contribution, the project promotes rural employment, a gender-focused approach through strong women's participation, biodiversity conservation, and income generation for communities. Sembrando Futuro 2.0, the ecological restoration project being developed in Colombia's Andean region by Grupo Argos Foundation and Terraformation, received an "A" rating from Sylvera, an independent carbon data provider, which highlighted the initiative's ability to generate real, measurable carbon capture with high standards of integrity. The rating recognizes the project's technical design, its long-term approach, and its capacity to combine ecosystem restoration, carbon capture, and value creation for rural communities. Sembrando Futuro 2.0 aims to restore more than 2,000 hectares across the departments of Antioquia, Caldas, Risaralda, Córdoba, and Chocó through the planting of more than 2.3 million trees. Its first phase already exceeds 1,000 hectares, with planting activities underway since September 2023. The initiative uses more than 70 native species, including nine threatened species according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and focuses its efforts on six high conservation value areas, contributing to biodiversity recovery, ecological connectivity, and the restoration of strategic ecosystems for the country. The first restoration initiative in Colombia certified by Verra using exclusively native species Sembrando Futuro 2.0 is registered with Verra, a non-profit organization that manages international standards for environmental and social projects, including the world's most widely used carbon certification program, under code VCS 5169. It is currently in the final stages of certification under the VM0047 V1.1 methodology, using exclusively native species. The project also contributes to five United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: climate action, life on land, gender equality, poverty reduction, and decent work and economic growth. A model that brings restoration to the heart of the territory One of the project's differentiating elements is its landowner-centered model. Through 40-year renewable conservation agreements, smallholders, community groups, and private landowners engage in the restoration process and directly participate in its benefits. To date, 25 conservation agreements have been signed with participating landowners, who receive approximately 55% of carbon revenues, creating a tangible incentive for the long-term stewardship of restored forests. Beyond its environmental impact, the project has already generated more than 240 local jobs, with women representing close to 20% of participation. This makes Sembrando Futuro 2.0 an initiative that not only restores ecosystems but also stimulates rural economies and strengthens local capacities. Local implementation of the project is led by Grupo Argos Foundation, which has more than a decade of experience in ecological restoration in Colombia. Terraformation contributes its expertise in restoration and carbon, its Terraware monitoring platform, and access to carbon markets. Findings from the independent assessment Sylvera's evaluation highlighted the project's strength across four dimensions. First, it concluded that its carbon accounting presents very low risk, supported by a robust methodology for measuring captured carbon, along with monitoring and control mechanisms aligned with international standards. Second, it assigned a low risk rating for additionality, recognizing that without the project - and without carbon-related revenues - native forest restoration at this scale would be unlikely in these regions. Third, regarding permanence, Sylvera identified a moderate risk, inherent to the region's environmental conditions, but noted that this is mitigated by species diversity, geographic distribution of restoration areas, and strong technical management. Finally, it rated the project's co-benefits as exceptional, given its contributions to environmental protection, local employment generation, and a more equitable distribution of income. "Each year, only a few dozen native forest restoration projects reach the carbon market. Sembrando Futuro 2.0 is one of them. Sylvera's 'A' rating confirms that it stands among the best." Yishan Wong Founder and CEO of Terraformation "This recognition validates not only the project's environmental integrity, but also a restoration model grounded in local knowledge, collaboration with rural stakeholders, and a long-term commitment to territorial stewardship. Sembrando Futuro 2.0 demonstrates that Colombia can lead high-quality native forest restoration projects, delivering tangible benefits for both communities and ecosystems." María Camila Villegas Executive Director, Grupo Argos Foundation An opportunity for landowners and companies Sembrando Futuro 2.0 will continue to expand and invites landowners in Antioquia, Caldas, Risaralda, Córdoba, and Chocó with degraded, unproductive, or underutilized land to explore joining the project. The initiative also represents an opportunity for companies interested in high-quality carbon credits with strong standards of traceability and positive impact on biodiversity and rural development. "We found in forest restoration a new life for land that had been used for many years. In just one year, we are already seeing trees grow and wildlife return. Most importantly, we are building something meaningful for future generations." Juan David Osorio, participating landowner in Antioquia. Announcing terraware's new Funder Portal. Terraformation Inc. is proud to announce the official launch of a new Funder Portal in Terraware, its forest restoration management platform. Designed specifically for project funders who support Terraformation's forest restoration projects - this portal offers transparent, reliable insights into how projects are performing over time. What funders can see. Funders value trustworthy data that shows that their investment is leading to measurable impacts. Regular performance reports help funders track progress against each project's key targets. These reports are accessible through their Terraware account and include metrics across financial, ecological, and social dimensions. Examples of what funders can view include: * Seeds collected * Hectares restored * Tree survival rate * Jobs created and gender representation * Challenges and mitigation plan As its planting, monitoring, and evaluation work expands, Terraformation Inc. expect to refine and add to the metrics Terraformation Inc. report in order to provide an even clearer picture of project impact and long-term progress. What sets the Funder Portal apart. Most reporting tools focus on a single outcome: how many trees were planted or how many hectares were restored. Its Funder Portal goes far beyond that. It offers a window into every stage of the restoration process, providing early and meaningful insights that help funders understand not just what is being planted, but how restoration is unfolding on the ground. * Early-stage operational visibility including seed collection, nursery propagation, and site preparation. * The Plant Dashboard, an industry first that delivers regular, ground-level planting insights during the most critical early stages, long before satellite-based remote sensing can detect new growth. * Monitoring data such as survival rates across species and site areas. This level of transparency allows funders to follow along as active partners, building a deeper understanding of operational performance and overall project health, and easily passing along relevant metrics, updates, and visuals to their stakeholders. Frequently asked questions (faqs). Is the Funder Portal open to everyone? No. The portal is designed specifically for funding partners who support Terraformation's restoration projects. Each partner receives a secure login and automatic notifications when new reports are available. How often are reports updated? In the early stages of a project, when tracking and monitoring are most critical, Terraformation Inc. plan to provide quarterly updates aligned with planting progress. Because planting schedules vary throughout the year based on local conditions (such as rainy versus dry seasons), reporting timelines may not always follow an exact fiscal quarterly cadence. When will reports be available for all projects? Some of its projects are still in the design phase. Once planting is underway and full funding is secured, Terraformation Inc.'ll begin publishing progress through the Funder Portal. Can funders track multiple projects? Yes. Funders who support more than one project can view their full portfolio through the Funder Portal. What level of information do funders receive? Funders have access to a comprehensive dashboard similar to the one used by project teams, allowing for the highest level of transparency and detailed insights into the project. How will the Funder Portal evolve over time? Terraformation Inc. is continually refining its reporting, metrics, and access to project data to provide the most transparent, accountable, and collaborative tool in forest restoration. Terraformation Inc. regularly solicit feedback from its partners and funders, which Terraformation Inc. will work to incorporate into its portal as appropriate. What does the Funder Portal look like?
