Gauging support for cross-platform E2EE RCS messaging on UK mobile operators UPDATE.

Gauging support for cross-platform E2EE RCS messaging on UK mobile operators UPDATE. Wednesday, May 20th, 2026 (7:05 am) - Score 600 Google and Apple recently began bringing cross-platform end-to-end encryption to Rich Communication Services (RCS), which is a data-only messaging service that's intended to replace traditional SMS text messaging (you need a mobile internet / broadband connection for it to work). But it's not yet fully available from all UK mobile operators. The move to make the service more secure and private began over a week ago after cross-platform E2EE RCS started rolling out in beta for iPhone users running iOS 26.5+ with supported carriers, while Android users on the latest version of Google Messages can already access the same feature. Encryption is designed to be on by default and will be automatically enabled over time for new and existing RCS conversations. NOTE: Apple maintains a useful list of supported mobile features, filtered by different carriers (here). As it stands, of the primary UK mobile operators, both EE (inc. BT Mobile) and Three UK have already introduced beta support for the cross-platform feature on both iOS and Android devices (support among their respective virtual operators is currently unclear or non-existent). On the flip side, a spokesperson for O2 informed ISPreview that the feature was "something we're keen to support in [the] future", but sadly they couldn't provide a clear timescale. The situation around Vodafone is a little bit more complex, due to the merger with Three UK (VodafoneThree). As above, Three already supports the cross-platform upgrade, but Vodafone itself does not (i.e. E2EE RCS only works Android to Android) - partly due to operating their own RCS infrastructure (instead of using Google's platform). Ispreview did query this with Vodafone yesterday, but have yet to receive a reply and will update this article when or if that changes. Suffice to say that some mobile operators still have a bit of work left to do on cross-platform E2EE RCS integration. Meanwhile, the UK government continues to view the additional privacy features introduced by E2EE messaging services as being a fundamental threat to public safety (here), while continuing to demand backdoors for security services with proper legal authority. But as recent compromises of global telecoms networks show (e.g. Salt Typhoon), legally mandated backdoors can end up being exploited by hackers. UPDATE 8:51am Vodafone have informed that they're not yet in a position to comment.

Vodafone and Three apologise to Tenby for poor phone signal.

Vodafone and Three apologise to Tenby for poor phone signal. 25th April Vodafone and Three have come under fire for the poor quality of phone signal in Pembrokeshire (Image: Kath Brookes) A Pembrokeshire town's reputation as one of the worst places in the UK for mobile phone signal does not look to be altered anytime soon. One network provider's mast is currently absent, while no date has been given for the replacement of another. There have been onstant complaints from local businesses, residents and visitors in Tenby experiencing poor or even non-existent signal on some networks in the SA70 postcode. Tenby is currently without its Vodafone mast, while work on replacement BT/EE mast at Penally - for which planning permission was granted last September - has yet to start. Some businesses have been 'seriously affected' by the 'extremely poor' mobile phone signal during the past several months, said Tenby North county councillor, Michael Williams. Cllr Williams said he had changed his own mobile phone provider, with no improvement, and felt that this appeared to 'point to a failure of mast infrastructure'. He added: "The excuse offered during the summer months is the inability of the masts to cope with demand. This isn't good enough, when customers are paying high prices for a service they are not getting. "It says something when one can travel to some of the most remote areas or Europe, in particular the Carpathian Mountains, and have absolutely no problem with a mobile phone signal and yet here - where Western Telegraph pay ludicrously high prices - Western Telegraph receive a very limited service. "I have written to Ofcom complaining, but I hold out little hope of receiving any meaningful response." Vodafone - which removed its mast at Slippery Back, near Tenby Cemetery, several months ago - has apologised to customers for the poor signal. A spokesperson said: "Western Telegraph is sorry to Vodafone and Three UK customers in the Tenby area who are experiencing issues with their service. This follows the decommissioning of a mast in the area. "Western Telegraph is working with its infrastructure partner on a longer-term solution and are exploring temporary options to help restore coverage as quickly as possible. "Customers can check Vodafone's Network Checker and Three UK's Coverage and Network Status Checker for the latest updates. Meanwhile, work has yet to start on the upgrade of the EE/BT mast at Penally. A spokesperson said: "Planning permission was granted to replace the existing monopole at Petals Plant Nursery, Penally. Once complete, the upgraded mast will deliver improved connectivity for BT/EE customers across the Tenby and Penally area. Construction has not yet commenced." The application is being put forward by Cellnex, which has said: Read More: "We are not currently in a position to detail the construction timeframes." More Stories

New business 'opening soon' on Chippenham High Street

New business 'opening soon' on Chippenham High Street. 13th March A new business is "opening soon" in a Wiltshire town centre after taking over an empty building on the High Street. Gold Union has taken on the former Three store on Chippenham High Street, which closed last September when the chain left the town. Signs posted at the front of the shop have claimed that Gold Union, which already has multiple branches across the UK, will be opening at the site soon. The signs added that customers will be able to buy and sell jewellery, coins, bullion, and investments at the store, as well as having access to free valuations. Work has been ongoing for weeks to convert the space into its new use, after hoardings with the Three branding were recently removed from the building. The new store coming on Chippenham High Street (Image: Newsquest) Suggested reading An opening date for the new Gold Union store has not yet been confirmed. The closure of the Three store came after a review of the chain's retail estate. At the time, a Three spokesperson said: "We have decided to close our Chippenham store as part of our regular review of our retail estate. "All colleagues employed at the store have been redeployed to nearby stores. "Three may return to the area in the future, but in the meantime, the nearest alternative stores are in Bath, Trowbridge, and Swindon."
