Veterinary industry news. The latest updates from Bond Vet, Small Door Veterinary, VCA, Provet, Thomson Veterinary Education, VetEvolve, Enovis, AVMA, and Vetster. July 14, 2026 | Today's veterinary business staff. Bond Vet, Small Door Veterinary merge. Bond Vet and Small Door Veterinary have merged. The combined company spans more than 55 clinics across the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Midwest. Small Door cofounder Florent Peyre will serve as CEO, and Dr. Jamie Richardson stays on as chief medical officer. Both brands will continue operating separately in the near term. VCA cuts nearly 200 jobs. VCA Animal Hospitals is laying off close to 200 corporate and veterinary staff, including 100 at its Los Angeles headquarters, beginning Sept. 1, tied to restructuring and the earlier closure of a San Leandro emergency hospital. Mars-owned VCA operates over 1,000 hospitals nationwide. Provet Debuts All-in-One PIMS for AI Agents. Provet has launched what it calls the first all-in-one veterinary PIMS built for AI agents. The new Ask Provet Agent answers operational questions using live practice data, while Clinical Agent transcribes consultations into notes, diagnoses, and orders. A forthcoming Provet MCP will connect the platform to external AI tools like Claude and ChatGPT. Provet serves more than 3,000 clinics across 45 countries. New program offers hospital-wide Anesthesia training. Thomson Veterinary Education has launched Anesthesia Essentials, an online program approved for 12 hours of RACE continuing education. Created by Cornell anesthesiologist Dr. Alexander Thomson, the self-paced course covers anesthetic planning, monitoring, pharmacology, and complications, and is offered hospital-wide under a single subscription. A SCORM/xAPI version is also available for custom LMS integration. VetEvolve names chief veterinary officer. VetEvolve has appointed Dr. Laura Pletz to the newly created role of chief veterinary officer, tasked with strengthening clinical quality and professional development across the organization's 53 partner practices. Dr. Pletz brings more than 20 years of veterinary leadership experience, most recently as Divisional Vice President of Medicine at BluePearl. Enovis launches veterinary laser therapy system. Enovis' Companion Animal Health division has launched CT-RevitL, a next-generation PBM laser therapy system built on more than 150 published studies. The device uses new COMPASS technology to deliver calibrated dosing and reduce treatment variability. Available to U.S. practices, CT-RevitL targets pain management, tissue healing, and post-operative recovery. An international rollout is planned in later phases. AVMA Delegates approve policy changes, elect leadership. The AVMA House of Delegates has approved a unified policy on free-roaming cats, replacing separate 2016-era policies on owned and unowned cats, following collaboration among feline, avian, wildlife, and shelter veterinarians. Delegates also revised policies on calf management and animal abuse reporting, endorsed state proclamations for One Health Day, and extended the eligibility grace period for constituent veterinary organizations from one to two years. The House of Delegates also elected Dr. Robert Knapp of Ohio as 2026-27 president-elect and Dr. Elizabeth Boggier of New Jersey as 2026-28 vice president, both unopposed. Dr. Knapp, a former AVMA Board chair, will succeed Dr. Jen Quammen next July. Federal rulemaking could reshape AVMA accreditation structure. The U.S. Education Department has proposed rules that would require accreditors such as the AVMA Council on Education to sever shared resources with affiliated trade groups, bar academics at accredited institutions from voting on standards, and emphasize outcomes such as licensure rates. If finalized by November, most changes take effect July 1, 2027. The AVMA says it remains committed to accreditation independence. Study: ChatGPT provides risky pet health advice. New research from Vetster's Dr. Jo Myers has found that ChatGPT often oversimplifies or misdiagnoses pet health questions, sometimes fabricating unstated details like breed and missing emergency warning signs. With roughly a quarter of pet owners trusting AI for diagnosis, Dr. Myers cautions that the tool is useful for background research and prepping vet questions, but shouldn't replace professional care or emergency guidance.
VCA Animal Hospitals lays off nearly 200 California employees. July 7, 2026 Discover more Athletic Shoes VCA Animal Hospitals is laying off nearly 200 employees in California as part of a corporate and clinical restructuring. According to filings with the state's Employment Development Department, the cuts include 100 corporate roles in Los Angeles and 90 clinical positions following the closure of a San Leandro facility. ## VCA Corporate and Clinical Cuts in Los Angeles and San Leandro The workforce reductions hit two distinct areas of the business. Between Sept. 1, 2026, and Nov. 15, 2026, VCA will eliminate 100 positions at its Sawtelle headquarters in Los Angeles. Maria Druse, VCA divisional people and organization director, confirmed the office will stay open, but the layoffs target IT personnel, database administrators, and staff in accounts payable and purchasing. On the clinical side, VCA closed its Bay Area Veterinary Specialists & Emergency Hospital in San Leandro. Katie Baumgarten, human relations director, stated this closure affected 90 employees, including technicians and veterinarians. A separate facility in Santa Barbara closed in March due to "operational challenges," according to a company spokesperson. ## Margin Compression and the Corporate Veterinary Model The restructuring reflects a broader struggle for corporate-owned veterinary groups. Matt Salois, president of the American Veterinary Medical Association, noted that the industry is facing "softer demand, affordability pressures, productivity challenges, and margin compression." Salois pointed out that the growth model used by large chains - built on rapid consolidation and low borrowing costs - is failing in an environment of higher interest rates and tighter household budgets. This shift contrasts with the expansion seen during the previous period of rapid consolidation in the veterinary sector. ## Comparing VCA and PetVet Care Centers Trends VCA is not the only corporate entity recalibrating. The American Veterinary Medical Association reports that corporate-backed segments are seeing a drop in visit volumes. This trend is mirrored by rival chain PetVet Care Centers, which recently reported layoffs in Washington. While VCA maintains a network of over 1,000 laboratories and hospitals, these California cuts suggest a move away from debt-reliant expansion toward localized operational efficiency. ## Mars Inc. Ownership and Financial Context VCA is a unit of Mars Petcare. Its parent company, Mars Inc., is a privately held confectionery giant based in McLean, Virginia, with $50 billion in annual revenue. Mars acquired VCA in 2017 for $9.1 billion. VCA stated it is committed to keeping staff within the organization where possible, noting that impacted employees may be eligible for other roles within the network. The company claimed these changes ensure it can continue investing in its people, advancing veterinary medicine, and delivering value to pet owners. Discover more Dictionaries & Encyclopedias
