Virtua Health says it is first in region to offer two new procedures in breast cancer surgery. ROI-NJ Staff(Marlton) August 4, 2026 Doctors Lori Timmerman DO and Prakash Mathew MD lead the new breast procedures. - courtesy Virtua Health Virtua Health says it is the first medical group provider in the South Jersey region to offer two new advancements in breast cancer surgery designed to improve patients' lives both physically and emotionally. For many facing breast cancer, mastectomy - complete removal of the breast tissue - is the recommended treatment approach. Two new surgical techniques now aim to provide patients with significantly improved cosmetic outcomes, less painful recovery and better quality of life after surgery. The procedures are a new type of minimally invasive mastectomy and an innovative technique that has the potential to restore sensation. Virtua says it is the first to provide the new endoscopic mastectomy procedure in both the Philadelphia region and South Jersey. Additionally, Virtua says it is the first in South Jersey to offer the sensation-restoring procedure. Both procedures are now being performed by Virtua Health, South Jersey's largest health system, as part of the Penn Medicine | Virtua Health Cancer Program. A new, minimally invasive breast mastectomy called endoscopic nipple-sparing mastectomy (E-NSM) is the first-ever laparoscopic technique for breast surgery and is at the forefront of adoption in the U.S. and brand new to the region. Laparoscopic surgery enables smaller incisions, which can support faster recovery and less pain after surgery. E-NSM also preserves the nipple - with scars virtually hidden - in contrast with a traditional mastectomy. Moreover, the procedure may eliminate the need for a second reconstructive surgery. With E-NSM, tissue removal and breast reconstruction with implants are performed in a single operation. Further evolving the capabilities of traditional breast surgery, breast neurotization (known as the Resensation technique) is an emerging surgical technique that can restore sensation in the breast after nipple-sparing mastectomy. Breast reconstruction allows women to feel more comfortable and recognizable in their bodies post-mastectomy and plays a crucial role in psychological healing for many. Physical sensation is an important element of breast reconstruction that is now becoming possible, thanks to breast neurotization. Nearly 80% of women report experiencing pain, numbness, or both after breast cancer surgery. This is an unfortunate but understood side effect of surgery: when breast tissue is removed during a mastectomy, nerves in the area are severed, which can leave the breasts with a near-total and permanent loss of sensation. For many women, losing sensation can hinder their physical, psychological, and emotional recovery. Resensation enables breast and reconstructive surgeons to work together intentionally to restore this important aspect of reconstruction. The procedure involves inserting a small length of donated nerve graft to bridge two nerve ends, one located in the nipple and the other behind the breast, which gives the nerve a chance to regrow. The procedure can be performed at the time of mastectomy and reconstruction or at a later date. Nerves can take some time to regrow, but many patients have reported meaningful restoration of sensation within one to two years.

Virtua Its Lady of Lourdes Hospital expansion in Camden construction milestone for $500 million project. Virtua Its Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Camden celebrated a major construction milestone on June 9, as the not-for-profit health system held a topping-off ceremony to mark the placement of the final structural steel beam atop the hospital's new patient tower. The project is part of Virtua Health's $500 million renovation and expansion of its Haddon Avenue healthcare campus, which recently celebrated its 75th anniversary. At the center of the project is a more than 200,000-square-foot addition that will increase the overall size of the hospital by approximately 35%. The new seven-story pavilion will serve as the hospital's primary entrance while adding six floors dedicated to advanced patient care services. Scheduled to open in spring 2028, the building has been named the Marvin Samson Pavilion in honor of businessman and philanthropist Marvin Samson, who pledged $5 million to support Virtua Health's education and workforce development programs. The donation is the largest gift in Virtua's history. "The Marvin Samson Pavilion demonstrates our commitment to the future of care in Camden and beyond," said Virtua President and CEO Dennis W. Pullin, FACHE. "We look forward to welcoming every patient with compassion and supporting our staff and clinicians with a space that reflects their exceptional work." As part of the traditional topping-off ceremony, the final steel beam - roughly the width of a two-car garage - was painted white so attendees could sign it with colorful permanent markers before construction crews lifted it into place using a large crane. Honoring the hospital's Catholic heritage, Rev. Jon Peter Thomas, Vicar General for the Diocese of Camden, blessed the 20-foot-long, 700-pound beam before it was raised and permanently installed. Impressive construction progress. Beyond being a symbolic milestone, the ceremony also highlighted the remarkable pace of construction. Just four months ago, my drone photos of the site captured the start of steel installation which at the time showed only a small amount of structural steel in place. The rapid transformation since then is impressive, with the tower's steel framework now rising prominently above the Camden skyline. The new pavilion is being connected to the existing hospital campus at the intersection of Haddon and Euclid avenues. Once completed, it will support Virtua's advanced medical services, including cardiovascular care, organ transplantation, and expanded neurosciences programs offered in partnership with Penn Medicine. "This beautiful, state-of-the-art pavilion will be the new heart of our hospital," said Lisa Ferraro, Senior Vice President of Virtua Health and President of Virtua Its Lady of Lourdes Hospital. "It will provide a private room for every patient, advanced surgical facilities, dedicated spaces for specialized care, and areas for reflection and remembrance. As the hospital's new front door, it will include an uplifting and welcoming lobby." Features of the new Marvin Samson Pavilion. The expansion will include: * 78 private patient rooms * 10 operating rooms, including two hybrid operating suites * Four cardiac catheterization laboratories * Three electrophysiology labs for treating heart rhythm disorders * Two gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy rooms * 40 surgical preparation and recovery rooms * A neuro-surgical stroke intervention suite * A centralized Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) featuring 40 private, adaptable patient bays Additional hospital upgrades underway. In addition to the new pavilion, Virtua is investing in significant renovations throughout the existing hospital campus. Recent and ongoing improvements include the opening of the hospital's first dedicated neurosciences intensive care unit, renovations to the Mother-Baby Unit, and upgrades to several patient rooms within the Acute Rehabilitation Center. Together, these investments represent one of the largest healthcare construction projects currently underway in South Jersey and reinforce Virtua's long-term commitment to expanding advanced medical care in Camden.
