Bunge Global SA has received final regulatory approval from China for its acquisition of Viterra, a deal valued at $34 billion. The transaction is expected to close on or around July 2, 2023. This merger will create a major global crop trading and processing company, enhancing Bunge's position against competitors like Archer-Daniels-Midland and Cargill. Following the announcement, Bunge's shares rose by 6.1%.
The $8.2 billion acquisition of Viterra by Bunge is stalled due to US-China trade tensions, with China yet to approve the deal. Bunge's CEO has made multiple trips to China for negotiations. The acquisition, announced in June 2023, aims to create a $25 billion agricultural giant. Bunge is in the final regulatory approval phase but has missed initial deadlines. If antitrust approvals fail, Bunge must pay Viterra a $400 million termination fee. The deal has been approved in Europe and Canada.
Bunge Global SA received approval from Canada for its $8 billion acquisition of Viterra Inc., with conditions including asset sales. The deal, announced in June 2023, will create a $25 billion entity to compete with Cargill and Archer-Daniels-Midland. Bunge must sell six grain elevators in Western Canada and invest at least C$520 million ($362 million) in Canada over five years. The deal is expected to close in early 2025, pending approval from China.
